Which should I prefer, civil engineering at IIT Hyderabad or ECE at ISM Dhanbad?

AB

Lives in Bangalore

Irrespective of the IIT tag you go for, Civil Engineering always has limited placements. Civil Engineering has become an outdated branch with little or no scope left. Although there are people who go for various options after pursuing civil engineering, which may include UPSC Examinations. What I mean is that Civil Engineering is not the right choice if your goal is placements. In that case consider ECE from ISM Dhanbad. Owing to the increased research in Machine Learning, the ECE branch is expected to grow ten folds in the coming future.

Additionally, ECE in IIT (ISM) has a pretty good coding and robotics culture, so you have both options, going for core jobs or CS jobs.

Ultimately, it’s all about personal inclinations. All I suggest is that never go for a mediocre rank just because a certain IIT is better than the other. The choice of your branch is equally important as the choice of your institute. Moreover, the Civil engineering scenario is similar in every IITs.

What is the present condition of Civil engineering branch at IIT Mandi? Is it a good decision to choose it?

TM
Tithi Mukherjee Posted On : June 30th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi

The condition of the branch of civil engineering is not pretty good at IIT Mandi. They do not have sufficient faculty and the placement support is very poor when compared to other institutions. You can look for other colleges for civil engineering. If you are looking for a branch change, then you can switch to CSE after the completion of your first year.

IIT Patna is the best among the given new IITs in civil engineering. IIT (ISM) Dhanbad is the oldest institute. One of my friends studied at IIT Patna and it was a great experience for him.

Some of the reasons for opting for IIT Patna over other institutes are –

    • Faculty – The members are highly qualified. So, be assured of the quality of education you would receive here.
    • Facilities – They have their own environmental engineering lab, geotechnical engineering lab, transportation engineering lab, its own workshop which is all top-notch.
    • Events and activities – The department has its own club – ACE (Association of Civil Engineers) which helps to exchange knowledge between the juniors and seniors, the culture of unity, building alumni network, etc.
  • Alumni Network: Many of the alumni are doing research in prestigious global institutions such as Stanford University, UC Berkeley, NUS Singapore, University of Texas – Austin, Virginia Tech, etc.

SR
Sudipta Roy Posted On : November 3rd, 2021
studied Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering at Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology

One of my friends completed his Civil Engineering from DCRUST. Here are his insights.

  • Faculty: The faculty base of Civil Engineering at DCRUST is good. Teachers are well-qualified. They also have good experience in their respective fields.
  • Environment: DCRUST offers the best learning environment for Civil in Haryana after NIT Kurukshetra. The campus is also developing over the years.
  • Placements: Placement for Civil is not that great at DCRUST. Although few companies do visit the campus for Civil Engineers. In the recent placement drive, the highest CTC offered was 10 LPA.
  • Connectivity: It has good connectivity to Delhi NCR. You can easily take coachings for GATE, IES.

Although the campus placement may not give you many core jobs for civil engineering at DCRUST, there are various Govt. jobs that you can prepare for. You can also pursue higher studies. Overall, DCRUST is a decent option for pursuing a Civil Engineering degree.

Which among IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Ropar, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Indore, IIT Patna and IIT Dhanbad is best for civil engineering?

SM
Sangita Mishra Posted On : July 16th, 2021
B.Tech Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (2020)

A close friend of mine is an alumnus of IIT Gandhinagar and she vouches for their Civil Engineering course. Here is what she shared from her experience.

  • This college has a very liberal branch-changing policy. You just need to build your core concepts and score well in your semesters. Suppose you want to change from the civil engineering branch to the CSE branch, then you first need to build your coding skills, and perform well in your first year. Then the branch changing would be easier for you.
  • The faculty members of this college are very good. In each branch, there is an intake of 30 students only. This means that every teacher can concentrate on each and every student.
  • The placements in this college is average but it is improving day by day. According to the placement statistics of 2020, the highest and average CTC offered at the institute are 8 LPA and 40 LPA.

The new director of IIT Gandhinagar is from the Civil Engineering department and is paying special attention to improve the different aspects of the department.

Should I change my branch from civil to EEE at PES University because of the poor placements for civil?

CB
Chirag Bhardwaj Posted On : October 17th, 2020
Studied Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering at PES University (2019)

PES University was ranked as the 6th best private university out of 50 universities in India by outlook in 2019. It is also ranked 93 for private engineering by NIRF 2020. The college is recognized by UGC, AICTE, and AACSB. It is one of the top private universities in Bangalore. The high rankings of the college don’t show the poor placements which the college has offered in the past year.

Placements:

  • As compared to the previous years, the placements offered at PES University in core companies are fewer in number for the academic year 2019.

  • Companies visit the college, but many of the students opting for higher students opt-out for the placements. Making the placement percentage high because of the fewer students present at the placement.

  • There were a number of companies that recruited students. But in recent years the placement of the college in the Civil Engineering course has not been up the mark as promised by the college.

However, if you have a keen interest in Civil engineering, then you should not change their branch. Placements are not the only thing that needs to be focused on. Changing the branch will also not make any much difference as both the courses EEE and Civil Engineering provide more or less the same average package that is Rs 3-4 LPA. However, keep in mind that in recent times, there are also other colleges that are not able to fulfill the promised core placements for Civil.

Although Civil Engineering has poor core placements, there are many non-core companies which allow the students of Civil to sit for the placement. The average CTC offered by the non-core IT companies visiting the campus for the placement drive is 10 LPA.

Therefore, a student should keep in mind all the factors when changing a branch and not solely look at placements.
