How is CS taught at IIIT Hyderabad?

SG
Shubham Gaur Posted On : July 31st, 2023
CS undergrad, IIIT Hyderabad

The delivery of the CS curriculum at IIIT Hyderabad is indeed a beautiful process because that’s what IIIT Hyderabad is known for. The curriculum is taught through extensive pedagogy in the form of classes, tutorials, lab sessions, assignments, and mid and end-sem exams.

  • Classes: The classes are very dynamic covering very little concept in detail addressing the whys and whats. The classes are very helpful and most students who are attentive can score good grades easily.
  • Labs: Here, the theoretical concepts are given a practical approach and their implementation is taught by the TAs. They help you constantly in rectifying errors and shortcomings in coding.
  • Tutorials: Tutorials usually comprise advanced concepts and a bit of high-level problems. They challenge the cider in you and are very helpful in improving your caliber.
  • Assignments: Another effective mode of learning is assignments that tend to evaluate your learning and knowledge. Usually, the level of assignments is higher than classes and tutorials to make things more challenging. Before the submission, these problems are discussed to ensure everyone completes the assignments before the deadline.
  • Other courses: Other courses like Maths 1 and Math 2 are customized for CS such that students are taught math required for Data structures in Math 1 itself.

Overall, everything in IIIT Hyderabad is directly or indirectly related to CS!

What is the meaning of back semester, back log etc. at SVNIT? What are its consequences?

JS
Jay Shah Posted On : January 3rd, 2024
studied at Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat

Semester back and backlog are two different things. Here is the detailed information on this topic-

  • Semester back- A semester back implies that the person is not allowed to enter the next semester. There are a few reasons for semester back. These are-
  1. The person failed to fulfill the minimum 75% attendance criteria. Medical is accepted only for 60% and above attendance category students.
  2. A person with a backlog from 1st year can’t enter his/her 3rd year, and someone with a backlog in the 2nd year can’t enter his/her 4th year.
  3. Someone with 3 or more backlogs can not enter the next year.

The criteria changes from year to year, so make sure to keep a check on that.

Everyone is given a chance to clear their backlogs during the summer semester.

The rules keep changing with time, so it is better to keep yourself updated on the

latest rules regarding backlogs.

  • Backlog- A subject backlog means having failed in that subject in the end semester exams. In this case, two mark sheets are issued for that semester, the second one mentions the total number of attempts.

In case you are trapped in any of these situations, do not panic. Try to clear your backlogs. Do not be disheartened and remember that things will eventually get better.

Which is better, an IIT KGP CSE dual degree or an IIT Roorkee CSE B.Tech?

KB
Keshav Behera Posted On : April 17th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee

Without any second thoughts, choose IIT Roorkee CSE B. Tech over IIT KGP CSE dual degree because dual degrees are usually less preferred by companies coming for placements.

It’s better to do MTech after BTech than to opt for a dual degree. The main reason is that in Masters you are open to changing your branch in case your interest goes to another field. But a dual degree means you will be studying the same field with no option of changing in between.

Another major disadvantage of a dual degree is that you are not eligible to change your branch to a 4-year program irrespective of your CGPA

You will see your batchmates leaving a year before you and getting offers and settling well before you.

IIT KGP no doubt is older and better than IIT Roorkee in every aspect. But as far as the program is concerned, a dual degree is not worth spending so many years at all.

KS
Kunal Sharma Posted On : April 3rd, 2023
B.Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

Some aspects to determine the best branches for you at IIT Delhi are mentioned below:

  • Area of interest: If you let your passion decide the branch for you, then it’s the best way.
  • Placements: Undoubtedly, CS is the winner here with MnC and Electrical being the next.
  • Research: The biotechnology branch provides the best research opportunities but to avail them you will probably have to move abroad
  • A perfect blend of everything: The Engineering Physics branch with its perfect amalgamation of math, physics, and engineering is the right blend of everything one seeks in an engineering branch.
  • MBA/ Civil Services: Textile Engineering and Chemical Engineering are good choices as you will have ample time to prepare for CAT or UPSC.
  • Non-Core jobs: Non-core jobs usually depend on the individual's profile and not his branch
  • Extracurriculars - To spare time for extracurriculars you either need excellent time management skills or go for a branch with lighter coursework like Textile, Biotech, Chem, and EP.

Ultimately, the branch which is better for you is a matter of personal preference more than anything.

What should I take, electrical engineering at IIT Delhi or CSE at BITS Pilani?

A
Admin Posted On : July 9th, 2024

IIT Delhi and BITS Pilani are two highly reputed institutions for engineering studies in India. I am a second year B.Tech Electrical student at IIT Delhi. During my time, I was faced with a similar dilemma. But I ended up choosing IIT Delhi over BITS Pilani for my studies.

I would recommend you choose Electrical Engineering at IIT Delhi over CSE at BITS Pilani because of these reasons:

  • Brand Value: IIT Delhi carries the prestigious “IIT'' tag  which holds more brand value than the “BITS Pilani'' tag. This will become important to you when applying to foreign universities for your higher education.
  • Fees: As a government institution, the fees of IIT Delhi is much more affordable as compared to BITS Pilani. This in turn, gives IIT Delhi a higher position in ROI (Return on Investment) because it offers even better placements.

Here are the important comparisons between Electrical Engineering at IIT Delhi and CSE at BITS Pilani:

Parameters

IIT Delhi Electrical

BITS Pilani CSE

Course Fee

INR 99,650 (for sem-1)*

INR 3.32 lakh (for sem-1)

Highest Package (Overall for 2023)

INR 2.5 CPA

INR 60. 75 LPA

Average Package (Overall for 2023)

INR 17.60 LPA

INR 30.37 LPA
