What should I choose between IIT Mandi Electrical and IIIt Allahabad IT?

KD
Koyel Dey Posted On : April 16th, 2021
Studied at IIIT Allahabad (2019)

One of my friends is a student at IIIT Allahabad pursuing a dual degree in IT. My older brother is a student at IIT Mandi, where he is studying electrical engineering. Regarding the whole situation, let me be absolutely honest with you.

  • If you are interested in electrical engineering, you should first apply to IIT Mandi.
  • Even if you are interested in CSE, you can choose IIT Mandi if you are confident in your ability to score well as branch change rules are less stringent there.
  • The campus and surrounding scenery are both stunning at IIT Mandi.
  • Since there are fewer students, there are more opportunities in every sector.
  • There are better sports facilities, as well as the IIT designation. IIT Mandi is the place to go if you want to be more involved on campus.

Which is tougher - the AFCAT or SSC CGL?

Asmita Khandelwal Posted On : January 8th, 2021

Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level Exam conducted in order to recruit applicants for Group B and Group C roles in different Government of India departments. AFCAT stands for Airforce Common Admission Test and is a test that is only taken by Airforce to select young boys and girls, and after selection candidates are scrutinized by SSB Interview.

It is difficult to decide which examination is tougher however, here are some of the important factors about the examinations.

Examination - Notifications:

  • AFCAT is carried out by the Indian Air Force and the notification is released by the first week of December.

  • SSC CGL releases the notification by the end of December and is conducted to recruit applicants for Group-C and Group-B posts. SSC CGL is conducted in 4 different stages called Tier I, Tier II, Tier III, and Tier IV.

Posts:

  • Applicants after qualifying AFCAT can join the following wings, Technical Officers, Officers of Ground Duties, and Officers of Flying, each with its own criteria and age limit.

  • SSC CGL is conducted to recruit applicants under the posts like Assistant, Inspector, Assistant Section Officer, Assistant, Auditor, Sub-Inspector, Junior Accountant, Tax Assistant, Assistant Account Officer, Upper Division Clerk, Junior Statistical Officer, etc.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for AFCAT and SSC CGL, applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.

Age Limit:

The age limit for different wings at AFCAT is tabulated below.

AFCAT

Age Limit

Flying

19-23

Technical

18-28

Ground Duties

20-23 for Graduates

Applicants for SSC CGL must be a citizen of India and their age limit must be within 18-32 years.

Exam Pattern:

AFCAT:

The AFCAT exam consists of a single paper that includes English, GA, mathematics, and reasoning, with a total of 100 questions which are to be completed within 2 hours.

SSC CGL:

  • The SSC CGL exam is divided into 4 segments, Tier I, Tier II, Tier III, Tier IV. Tier I encompasses General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, English Language & comprehension.

  • Tier II includes Quantitative Aptitude, English Language & Comprehension, Statistics, General Studies.

  • Tier III tests applicants' language skills.

  • Tier IV involves Data Entry Speed Test and Computer Proficiency Test.

SSC CGL is a lot tougher when compared to AFCAT, the reasons being successive stages of exams, vast syllabus, and numerous candidates.

To score well, SSC CGL Exam training needs a lot of intelligent work. The exam pattern and syllabus of the SSC Combined Graduate Level Test should always be revised by the candidates.

If I get selected into NSIT and IIIT-H for computer science, which one should I choose? What are the pros and cons at each of them?

Namrata Das Posted On : August 22nd, 2023

Here are the pros and cons of both NSUT and IIIT Hyderabad

NSUT Pros:

  1. NSUT has a very light academic workload so you can spend time exploring your passions
  2. The crowd here is excellent and will teach you a lot during your time here.
  3. NSUT is located in the capital city and enjoys a lot of benefits. Moreover, it’s located away from the hustle and bustle of the city in
  4. NSUT students get easy access to internships because Delhi has a lot of start-ups.
  5. NSUT hostels are decent and the food served is much better than a lot of other colleges around.

NSUT Cons:

  1. NSUT has Computer Engineering instead of Computer Science & Engineering which comprised subjects related to hardware
  2. The syllabus is outdated and no new developments in the field are covered. Moreover, core CS subjects are taught only after the 5th sem
  3. NSUT has a very pathetic research scenario and only a few professors are involved in good research work.
  4. NSUT infrastructure and facilities are in a very bad state. There isn't a Wi-Fi facility on campus and no internet in hostels.

IIIT Hyderabad Pros:

  1. IIIT Hyderabad has the best CS curriculum in India. You will be mostly studying core CS courses.
  2. IIIT Hyderabad has a rich coding culture and has produced a large number of coders. Some of them have even been featured at the top in online programming judges and competitions
  3. IIIT Hyderabad has an active research culture and students are required to do research as a part of their course.
  4. The placement scenario of IIIT Hyderabad is amazing and the best companies come for recruitment.

IIIT Hyderabad Cons:  Its curriculum is pretty challenging and very much CS-tailored making it difficult for students to explore their non-CS interests.

I will suggest you go for IIIT Hyderabad as it has better opportunities and an academic environment.

Can I prefer AIIMS Patna over IGMC Shimla considering Patna as a city in Bihar?

VS
Vishakha Sharma Posted On : June 6th, 2023
studies MBBS from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Patna (2025)

Yes, AIIMS Patna is definitely a better choice than IGMC Shimla because no matter how much natural beauty you will experience in Shimla, being a state college you will have the disadvantage of bonds.

AIIMS Patna on the other hand is an institute of National Importance that has been growing leaps and bounds over the past 11 years. The best part is that these new AIIMS are expected to grow more in the future while the state colleges maintain a similar situation.

AIIMS Patna will offer the best facilities and infrastructure and you will be guided by the best faculty. AIIMS Patna has a much more diverse student body than state colleges and the experience will be surreal as you are a part of the group. So I feel if you are against Patna because of the city or location, trust me as a medical student you will have no time to explore the city, and mostly your day will be spent inside the campus. So why miss the AIIMS tag!

Which college is better to join, VMMC or AIIMS Bhopal, comparing the faculty, hostel facilities, infrastructures, room facility, etc.?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : June 5th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

Both VMMC and AIIMS Bhopal are well-respected institutions in India and both have strong programs in medicine. In terms of faculty, both institutions have highly qualified and experienced faculty members. However,

  • Faculty: AIIMS Bhopal is considered to have a stronger faculty with more experienced teachers.
  • Hostel:  In terms of hostel facilities, VMMC has well-maintained hostels with modern amenities, while AIlMS Bhopal has older hostels that are in need of renovation. Both institutions have comfortable rooms, but AIlMS Bhopal is considered to have better-furnished rooms.
  • Infrastructure: In terms of infrastructure, both institutions have modern and well-equipped facilities. However, AIIMS Bhopal is considered to have a more advanced infrastructure.

These points clearly hold AIIMS Bhopal higher than VMMC, but I would still suggest you go for VMMC. AIIMS Bhopal may be better in terms of hostel, faculty, and infrastructure advantages but the most important factor for choosing a college is its location. Delhi offers better opportunities in terms of salary as well as other prospects. Delhi hospitals like Safdarjung Hospital have the highest pay scale for PG residents. Being in Delhi, you can work hard and get into a better hospital or college by Delhi quota for PG.

Ultimately I feel location should be given the highest priority while choosing a college and that being said, VMMC is the best option for you. However, the best choice for you will depend on your personal preferences and goals.

Which college should I choose, MAMC or JIPMER?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : September 20th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

Both these premiere Indian institutes are academically at par with each other. But you should consider these points when choosing between the two-

  1. JIPMER is located in Pondicherry and has no airport connecting it to metropolitan Indian cities. For the nearest airport, you’ll have to travel all the way to Chennai.
  2. Pondicherry is much safer though. You can walk alone in the evenings without any fear.
  3. JIPMER is much bigger than MAMC. Also, JIPMER provides top notch hostel facilities, at par with private colleges. Its campus is very well maintained as well.
  4. The JIPMER campus is so huge that students use scooties and bikes to travel from one block to another.
  5. MAMC offers more variety for North Indian meals.
  6. At MAMC, patients speak Hindi. At JIPMER on the other hand, Tamil is the dominant language. So there is some communication gap initially, but one learns to manage with time.
  7. Delhi offers a better city life, more malls and better movie theaters. Pondicherry is a calm and serene place with beautiful beaches. There aren’t huge shopping malls and big multiplex theaters over there, but you’ll be mesmerized by its natural beauty.

Both the colleges are equally excellent. You must choose between them based on your personal preference.

B.E Computer Science, Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra (2019)

If you compare them in terms of placement, infrastructure, ambiance, and alumni network BIT Mesra has an upper hand over MANIT Bhopal.

Being a 60 years old institute, BIT has an alumni network spread globally at Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon. One of the alumni even won Oscars recently for the best-animated movie.

BIT has great records in ICPC contests. The campus is amazing. Seniors are very helpful. The campus is ragging-free and poses an amazing infrastructure. IET, IEEE, ACM conducts various free workshops to enhance the skills of students.

MANIT Bhopal has an edge over BIT Mesra in terms of tuition fees. NITs are even regarded highly in terms of their brand name. This is the reason why BIT has a higher cutoff compared to NITs.

Are the new IIM's good enough to compete with the older ones? Are they better than XLRI or FMS?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : May 20th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

The new IIMs still have a long way to go and it will take several years for them to reach the level of top B-Schools like XLRI and FMS. It would take them a long way to reach there. It’s only after joining a B-School, that you realize a B-School is as good as its alumni. Top B-Schools have a large alumni base occupying executive positions in top MNCs. This in turn improves the brand value of these institutes.

Additionally, there are several companies that visit only the top 4-6 B-schools for summer and finals. Once you conduct in-depth research you will realize how many CHROs & CEOs are from XL and FMS. New IIMs would have to struggle hard to reach that level. Companies have a fixed pattern for recruitment for summers and finals. They stick to the same pattern and thus visit the same institutes every year. This is exactly why companies go through the immense struggle of visiting a remotely located institute like XLRI because they are sure of its worth and credibility.
