While many may find it confusing to compare IIT Patna and IIT Dhanbad, I recommend you go for IIT Patna without any second thoughts. Here are a few points that justify my opinion

1. IIT Patna was a fully established IIT in 2008 while ISM Dhanmad became an IIT recently in 2015. IIT Patna has contributed to the job market and research world largely despite being new.
2. IIT Patna CSE is a well-established department that records 100% placements every year. The department has a highly learned faculty pool.
3. IIT Patna's curriculum is in with that of top universities like Harvard, IISc, and IIT Bombay.
4. IIT Patna has strong relations with foremost industry leaders and top universities 

My friends from IIT Dhanbad themselves often claim their institute to be inferior to IIT Patna.

 If you're considering pursuing higher education in engineering, you may be wondering whether to choose IIT Patna or IIT(ISM) Dhanbad. Here's some information that may help you make a decision:

IIT Patna:

• IIT Patna is located far from the main city of Patna, which may be a disadvantage for some students who prefer to be closer to the city.

IIT(ISM) Dhanbad:

• IIT(ISM) Dhanbad is located in the main city of Dhanbad, just 15 minutes away from the railway station. It is situated in front of the main market area, which can be convenient for students.
• The weather in Dhanbad is cool and comfortable, with frequent short drizzles that can add to the charm of the place.
• Dhanbad is a smaller city than Patna, which can be a plus for some students who prefer a quieter and more peaceful environment.
• The brand value of IIT(ISM) Dhanbad is considered to be high, making it a preferred choice after the top 7+ IITs, along with Hyderabad and BHU.

While IIT Patna is located in a major city and has newer infrastructure, it is far from the main city and the weather can be quite hot. On the other hand, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad is located in a smaller city but is closer to the railway station and the main market area. The weather in Dhanbad is cooler and the brand value of the institution is high. 

IIT Patna's CSE department is known for its exceptional performance and achievements. Here are some highlights that showcase the department's excellence:

• Supportive faculty: In general, faculty members in IITs/NITs are not always supportive or enthusiastic about teaching. However, in IIT Patna's CSE department, most of the professors are very chill and supportive.
• Placement: The placement record of IIT Patna's CSE department is remarkable. Students with a CPI greater than 7 have a 100% placement rate. The average package offered is around 15 LPA, and the highest goes up to 50 LPA (last year's data). Students like Ashutosh Agarwal have even received a package of 1.8 crores from Google.
• Achievements: IIT Patna has achieved remarkable heights in a short span of time. Five students from the first year successfully cleared Google Summer of Code (GSoC) this year. Recently, the ACM-ICPC, a world-level coding competition, was conducted in China, and IIT Patna stood second (among Kolkata zone) and 56th worldwide. IIT Patna was the only "new" IIT to qualify for the World Finals.

All the institutions are good. You must first decide which branch you want to opt for among ECE, EEE, and CSE.

Ranking- In the NIRF India Rankings 2023: Engineering, out of the top 200 institutions, IIT Bhubaneswar is ranked 47th, IIT Dhanbad is ranked 17th, IIT Patna is ranked 41 and IIIT Bangalore is ranked 74th.

I don’t know much about other IITs and am familiar with the situation in IIT Patna only. My brother is currently a student there in the Electrical branch. He says that the situation here is nothing that people with preconceived notions regarding Patna or Bihar think it to be. 

IIT Patna UG EE Courses are great and it’s considered the toughest branch for a UG student like any other IITs. However, the curriculum here is very diverse and you will be introduced to both Electrical and Electronics and you can decide which one intrigues you more. You can pursue Coding and Open Source Development too as an electrical student. You will be surprised to know that IIT Patna’s best coded is a senior m of the EE Branch who cleared Google Code Jam and was also part of this year’s ACM-ICPC Team which qualified for the World Final and secured 56 Rank. There are many other examples of students who cleared GSoC.

IIT Patna also encourages its students to pursue research or go for Higher Studies. The professors and seniors offer relentless support.

The best part of IIT Patna is the plethora of options and opportunities you will have after 4 years!
