How is life at MANIT Bhopal?

SB
Surendra Bose Posted On : November 8th, 2023
Studied at Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Bhopal

As someone who just completed his first year at MANIT Bhopal, here is my opinion of my college-

MANIT has good infrastructure, serene location, and a properly functioning administration. Hostel life is really fun, and you’ll have a good time in the hostels. The college has a sports complex, a good place for sports enthusiasts.

However, senior-junior interaction is a bit tense on campus. As a first year, you’ll face a good number of unfriendly and dominating seniors. Some of the spots are restricted for freshers, and seniors are a bit threatening about it.

The seniors have created certain rules for freshers, one of which is to address them as sir/ma’am. Some seniors are good and friendly too, but a good number of them like to maintain dominance over first year students.

Life in general is good at MANIT Bhopal, but the seniors’ behavior towards first year students is highly upsetting.

Is NIT Srinagar good? Do Tamilians study at NIT Srinagar? Approximately how many?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : September 20th, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

Speaking objectively, every technical institute in India is as good as long as you make the most out of it. NIT Srinagar has a good reputation, especially for its core engineering branches like Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Civil Engineering. The remaining departments were established much later and haven't reached the NIT standards as of now. So, if you want to join one of the core branches, especially EE, NIT Srinagar is a decent choice.

NIT Srinagar's current ranking doesn't do justice to its real image. The survey conductor never visited the campus personally so the rankings are forged and not credible at all. However, it is true that NIT Srinagar has many deficiencies that are being constantly worked upon to improve the academic quality of the institution and help it regain the honor it had when it was REC Srinagar. However, its progress depends on the economic conditions as well as the geographical location of the state it is situated in. NIT Srinagar has one of the most beautiful campuses but its geographical location poses hindrances to conferences, seminars, and tech events. But the bright side is that you can establish a good bond with the faculty. The faculty at NIT Srinagar in the core engineering branches is intellectually motivated, professionally scrupulous, and academically blessed.

As for the second part of your question, there are only a handful of Tamilians here. But this isn't exactly disappointing as not many Jammu and Kashmir students go to the South Indian colleges so you and expect the same from them. Still, there are around 10-15 which is more than expected.

What is it like to do M.Tech/Ph.D in IIT Bombay after B.Tech in IIT Bombay?

PG
Pratik Gandhi Posted On : March 18th, 2023
B.Tech. CSE, IIT Bombay

Many students who have completed their B.Tech + M.Tech (Dual Degree) are now pursuing their PhD from IIT Bombay. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of choosing to do a PhD at IIT Bombay:

Advantages of Choosing IIT:

  • Freedom to choose your research topic and approach the problems in your own way.
  • Professors generally do not refuse to be your guide if you are a B.Tech from IIT Bombay.
  • You can explore other activities apart from academics such as art, music, dance, skating, and electronics hobbyist.

Disadvantages of Choosing IIT:

  • Lack of resources compared to outside universities, but this can be worked to your advantage if you are creative.
  • Most of the research topics at IITs are on outdated technologies and professors generally guide students to do research in their areas of expertise.
  • Lack of competitive environment, as some PhDs are not as competitive as B.Tech students.

Overall, if you enjoy campus life and are not solely focused on pay packages, doing a PhD at IIT Bombay is worth it. You can improve the level of research in IITs by being self-motivated and exploring your interests beyond academics.

What is the difference in grading system at IIT Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur?

SB
Sumit Bose Posted On : March 21st, 2023
IIT Bombay (2019)

All the 3 IITs, IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi, follow the relative grading. Under this, your grades are calculated after your GPA is generated with respect to the highest scorer's marks. This system is quite similar to that in the US except that the parameters considered while calculating grades are way different.

Grades are calculated by giving weightage to such parameters

  • Tests
  • Assignments
  • Projects
  • Quizzes
  • Group projects
  • Class participation

IIT B and IIT D grading system looks like this

Grade

Marks

AA or AP

10

AB

9

BB

8

BC

7

CC

6

CD

5

DD

4

DE

3

EE

2

Anything below this is considered Fail.

IIT Kanpur has an even grading system which looks like this

Grade

Marks

A*

10

A

10

B

8

C

6

D

4

E

you haven’t passed the course but you are eligible for taking such courses whose prerequisite was this course

F

Fail

Contrastingly, AP in IIT Bombay means excellent performance where AP in IIT Kanpur means Academic Probation. But still, I think IIT Kanpur is good to go with.

What do IITians think of BITS Pilani?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : August 5th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

They usually compare BITS Pilani with IITs, which may include some of the features given below

Brand Value and Tag – Most of the students give more importance to the tag name. The IITian tag is also effective in attracting big recruiters with higher salary packages than BITS. This made them choose IIT over BITS

Academics – Both institutes are good at offering the best academics and have experienced scholars in every department. IITs do not have dual degree programs like BITS, which sometimes attract students.

Flexibility – BITS Pilani follows a flexible system. They do not have attendance requirements like IITs, which help the students excel in extracurricular activities.

Both institutes have positives and negatives. So, give importance to your interest

How are the aerospace engineering departments at IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras?

PU
Pranav Upadhyay Posted On : March 20th, 2023
Aerospace engineering ,IIT KGP

Aerospace Engineering can be further divided into four parts

  • Aerodynamics - An extension of fluid mechanics
  • Structures - All about mechanics of materials
  • Propulsion - A good base in aerodynamics will help you
  • Controls and dynamics - Mainly used for navigation

Apart from this there is a lot of Math involved in the curriculum.

The aerospace engineering branches of all the institutes you mentioned give an edge to each other and are equally good. The choice should be based on personal preference, accessibility, campus life, academics, extracurricular activities and placements.

IIT Kharagpur: Pros

  • Massive and surreal campus
  • Less academic burden
  • Good faculty pool with experienced professors that are easier approachable.
  • Companies like Airbus, GE, Honeywell, Altair, Rolls Royce, etc come for placements in the core sector.
  • Some of the students go for higher studies in foreign universities like Purdue, Texas A&M, University of Texas, Austin, etc
  • IIT KGP offers the Boeing Project wherein a team of 5 fabricates all parts of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). On clearing the selection procedure, you will also be offered a scholarship of about 10k per month for an entire year.
  • I am not gonna mention any of the institutional activities (clubs, societies, fests etc.)because I reckon the scenario will be pretty much the same in all the aforementioned colleges.

IIT Kharagpur: Cons

  • It’s not easily accessible to students from Western and Southern States.
  • Kharagpur is a town and lacks many amenities apart from its large railway station.
  • Mess food is not good at all
  • The huge campus delays the time taken to reach the academic area.
  • The core companies only select the best students and a major portion of the batch has to go for non-core placements.
  • Aerospace Engineering in India has very few job prospects though we expect the scenario to improve a bit
  • You can also apply for off-campus placements at DRDO or ISRO.

Judging a branch solely on the basis of placements is misleading. Yet, most students end up with decent jobs. The best part is that the course curriculum of aerospace engineering is intriguing and keeps you hooked.

How come there are so many IAS toppers from FMS Delhi University?

AJ
Arshit Jain Posted On : January 7th, 2023
Works at Indian Administrative Service

Since 2011, the ratio of students entering Civil Services from all top B schools to their total strength has been increasing. This ratio is nearly identical for IIMs and FMS. People from XL, ISB, SP Jain and other B schools are unlikely to visit. There are several reasons why FMS, Delhi University produces so many IAS toppers:

  • Low fees relieve the burden of student loan repayment and allow students to take risks.
  • Low academic rigor and plenty of time to study for civils.
  • Very helpful and encouraging faculty members who will motivate you to join services over high-paying IB or consultancy jobs.
  • Being in Delhi makes it easier to obtain all the necessary study materials.
  • Interaction with other stream DU students in mixed hostels is beneficial.
  • The allure of Lutyens Delhi draws you into civil service.
  • Exposure to and interaction with a variety of serving and retired bureaucrats.
  • Having the opportunity to study at such a low cost motivates you to directly contribute to nation-building while foregoing high-paying jobs.
  • Most importantly, if you take management as an optional, you have a better chance of scoring well because the syllabus of the UPSC management exam, question paper pattern, and examiner's taste align well with our FMS faculty.
  • FMS is more well-known in the Delhi NCR area than L, I, and K, giving you a good reputation and a head start in UPSC interviews.

Every year, a few guys join FMS because they don't want to have two years on their resume that are blank. Plus, if you don't get into IAS, an MBA will be a great backup plan.

HG
Hrishi Ganu Posted On : November 11th, 2022
MBA from Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode

IIM Kozhikode’s MBA in liberal studies is a fresh change from the traditional MBA. It helps in the comprehensive development of students. Moreover, IIM Kozhikode has the best faculty when it comes to Humanities & Liberal Arts in Management.

Some amazing features of this course are:

  • It teaches the students soft skills like management, empathy, leadership, etc which go a long way over hard skills like complex excel models, and well-researched reports taught in traditional MBA.

  • The course is a good choice because of its content. You will have to select many of the Humanities & Liberal Arts electives to complete their degree requirements.

  • Companies considering HR, or Consulting roles will definitely prioritize you.

IIM Kozhikode’s MBA in liberal studies offers a fresh perspective and is not a bad choice.
