What are some of the best colleges in India for aerospace engineering?

RG
Ritu Ghai Posted On : February 17th, 2021
Aerospace Engineering, Chandigarh University, 2019

Aerospace Engineering covers mainly the construction, design, as well as maintenance aspects of aircraft, missiles, weapon systems, and spacecraft. Major focal points include fuel efficiency, flight safety, impact on the environment, and operating costs.

There are two major fields in aerospace engineering –

  • Aeronautical Engineering - which relates to the air bound vehicles that operate within Earth’s Atmosphere
  • And the second one is Astronautical Engineering - which relates to the vehicles that operate beyond Earth’s Atmosphere.

There are various colleges throughout the country offering Aerospace Engineering. However, a friend of mine recommended Chandigarh University Mohali as it is one of the best universities offering Aerospace Engineering in Northern India.

  • The university offers a four-year course in Aerospace Engineering which includes teaching the students about various important aspects of the course, such as Aircraft Propulsion and Structure, Basics of Space Engineering, Aircraft dynamics and control, Aircraft Vehicle Design, Aerodynamics, and Avionics, etc.
  • Also, the placement record of Chandigarh University is quite good, as I have been told by some of my friends who have studied there.

Often the students are given tasks that include calculations of the project costs as well as time scales. They are made to work on developing new and innovative technologies and upgrade manuals. Students will have an option to select between the Testing or Maintenance side or Research and Development side based on the knowledge they have acquired in the course after Graduation.

Which university is better for aerospace engineering - SRM, Anna, or Madras Institutes of Technology, or Hindustan University?

SG
Siddant Gupta Posted On : July 19th, 2022
Studied at Madras Institute of Technology, Tamil Nadu, India

Madras Institute of Technology is under Anna University. These two aren’t separate. If you want good job profiles with cushy salary packages, after completing your degree, MIT isn’t a good option. Not many core companies visit the campus drive for recruitment. Although placements in the non-core sector are good. MIT offers good academics and you can benefit from the institute if you are aiming to pursue higher studies. The course fee is nominal. The course costs around INR 1.58 lakhs.

SRM is a good option if infrastructure is your priority. Although the university fees are a little higher.

What is it like to major in Aerospace Engineering at IIT Bombay?

AT
Adwait Tejas Posted On : March 18th, 2023
studied Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (2021)

There is a course called CS207 Discrete Structures taught by Professor Ajit Diwan. It was related to Discrete Mathematics - Number Theory, Graph Theory, Combinatorics, Sets, and Groups, and was one of the most difficult courses my friend came across.

Professor Diwan is well known for his highly challenging problems and course material. During his lectures, he delivers a lot of information based on principles. For math lovers, his classes are an absolute delight.

He refrains from conducting more than one exam a month. However, the level of difficulty of the exam is high. The questions look very complicated but when one ponders upon them, they don’t seem that difficult.

The exams were extremely difficult to the extent that the passing cutoff was 7 out of 100 marks. Despite the entire batch consisting of JEE toppers, a lot of them were not able to make it to the cutoff.

Is IIT bombay aerospace worth it?

HP
Hrushikesh Potdar Posted On : March 18th, 2023
MTech from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK) (Graduated 2020)

Honestly speaking, if you are passionate about Aerospace, I suggest you opt for IIT Kanpur rather than IIT Bombay. The following points support my inclination toward IIT Kanpur for Aerospace.

  • IIT Kanpur has its own Airstrip and private planes.
  • Students perform experiments while flying over the campus.
  • IIT Kanpur offers a real-time experience that won’t be possible at IIT Bombay.
  • IIT Kanpur has MOUs related to VTOL, EVTOL Unmanned aerial vehicles, etc.
  • The size of the IIT Kanpur campus is almost double that of IIT Bombay.

However, if you are not into Aerospace and are just interested in placements, you should put extra effort into coding, Data Structures or ML, and Python and can consider IIT Bombay as a good choice.

How are the aerospace engineering departments at IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras?

PU
Pranav Upadhyay Posted On : March 20th, 2023
Aerospace engineering ,IIT KGP

Aerospace Engineering can be further divided into four parts

  • Aerodynamics - An extension of fluid mechanics
  • Structures - All about mechanics of materials
  • Propulsion - A good base in aerodynamics will help you
  • Controls and dynamics - Mainly used for navigation

Apart from this there is a lot of Math involved in the curriculum.

The aerospace engineering branches of all the institutes you mentioned give an edge to each other and are equally good. The choice should be based on personal preference, accessibility, campus life, academics, extracurricular activities and placements.

IIT Kharagpur: Pros

  • Massive and surreal campus
  • Less academic burden
  • Good faculty pool with experienced professors that are easier approachable.
  • Companies like Airbus, GE, Honeywell, Altair, Rolls Royce, etc come for placements in the core sector.
  • Some of the students go for higher studies in foreign universities like Purdue, Texas A&M, University of Texas, Austin, etc
  • IIT KGP offers the Boeing Project wherein a team of 5 fabricates all parts of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). On clearing the selection procedure, you will also be offered a scholarship of about 10k per month for an entire year.
  • I am not gonna mention any of the institutional activities (clubs, societies, fests etc.)because I reckon the scenario will be pretty much the same in all the aforementioned colleges.

IIT Kharagpur: Cons

  • It’s not easily accessible to students from Western and Southern States.
  • Kharagpur is a town and lacks many amenities apart from its large railway station.
  • Mess food is not good at all
  • The huge campus delays the time taken to reach the academic area.
  • The core companies only select the best students and a major portion of the batch has to go for non-core placements.
  • Aerospace Engineering in India has very few job prospects though we expect the scenario to improve a bit
  • You can also apply for off-campus placements at DRDO or ISRO.

Judging a branch solely on the basis of placements is misleading. Yet, most students end up with decent jobs. The best part is that the course curriculum of aerospace engineering is intriguing and keeps you hooked.

What is the scope of Aerospace Engineering in India and abroad for an IIT graduate?

AT
Adwait Tejas Posted On : March 23rd, 2023
studied Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (2021)

Today, aerospace engineering is growing at a steady rate among the other engineering fields in India. However, outside India, it has already been established in the past years and has many more opportunities than in India.

Both the government and private sector come into play when we talk about the aerospace industry. Government Organizations: Some of the biggest government organizations that are involved in the aerospace industry today are

  • SRO
  • DRDO
  • NAL
  • HAL
  • ISRO

To secure a job in these huge organizations, one needs to pass an interesting exam and sit for an interview. These organizations have decent salary packages. In the private sector, some of the biggest organizations are

  • Boeing
  • Airbus
  • GE Aviation
  • TATA advanced materials limited
  • Honeywell
  • GKN Aerospace
  • TATA advanced systems
  • Mahindra Aerospace

Academia: Another job prospect of an aerospace engineer within India is to enter academia. This basically means you have to conduct research at sum Institute and reputed research centers and pursue a Ph.D. at an IIT. Very few people go for this option.

Abroad: For job prospects outside India one needs to pursue an MS or Ph.D. in aerospace engineering. They don’t consider BTech pass-outs for their jobs unless they get a permanent residence permit and also higher education in the form of a master's and Ph.D. However, you can go for research in this field as it is not restricted on the basis of nationality. You can work in NASA or ESA provided that you are simply good at what you do.

These were some of the job prospects in the aerospace field. For more information, you can contact people from this background and enquire about career prospects in aerospace engineering.
