What should I take, BITS Goa CS or IIT Roorkee (civil or chemical branch)?

NB
Nitin Bhatia Posted On : April 15th, 2023
Studied at BITS Goa

The job opportunities in both Chemical and Civil are very limited and it’s also difficult to switch domains later. The core opportunities consist of more of a blue collared job. One can go for Government jobs if interested.

Go for CS in BITS Goa if you are looking for excellent placement opportunities or higher education. CS provides excellent opportunities in terms of higher studies and research work. But if you are adamant about Civil or Chemical, go only if you are genuinely interested, and that too after in-depth research about the nature of work.

The only drawback of joining BITS Goa is the exorbitant fees which might be a major issue for many. Apart from this the branch is very promising and is expected to grow more so. It’s recommended to contact working professionals in the field once and enquire about career prospects. Also, go for CS only after gaining a basic level of coding skills.

To secure a 10 CGPA in IIT Roorkee, you will have to become a book nerd and adopt a no-nonsense attitude.

  • Attend classes regularly and pay proper attention by sitting in the first row.
  • Maintain 100% attendance
  • Do your practicals excellent and submit the assignments on time.
  • Approach the professors frequently to clear your doubts and develop a rapport with them.
  • Become selfish when it comes to sharing your study secret

What is the scope of chemical engineering from IIT Roorkee?

RS
Radhika Srivastava Posted On : April 13th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee

Chemical engineering at IIT Roorkee is a branch of engineering that deals with the design, development, and operation of chemical processes. The scope of chemical engineering at IIT Roorkee covers a broad range of fields such as process design, process control, process dynamics and control, thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, fluid mechanics, reaction engineering, separations, environmental engineering, materials science and engineering, biotechnology, and more.

The branch offers three programs

  1. Under Graduation
  2. Post Graduation
  3. Research

The course structure at Undergrad level is simple and comprises repetitive concepts. Anyone with enough knowledge of basic class 12th Physical Chemistry will be able to master the course.

The placement scenario has witnessed a gradual decline owing to the increasing batch size every year. One rarely gets an off-campus job anymore.

The jobs of chemical engineers are usually in the process industry and are very challenging, especially in refineries and Oil rigs. Moreover, the job location is usually far off.

My knowledge is limited to Undergraduate courses only and I have no idea about PG and Research.

Which branch should I choose among IIT Delhi Chemical, IIT Delhi Biotechnology, IIT Bombay Aerospace, IIT Roorkee Electrical, IIT Roorkee Electronics?

MA
Madhav Aneja Posted On : April 5th, 2023

The choice of Institute or even the choice of the branch depends on where your inclinations lie. Still, if I would have been in your place, I would have opted for either IIT Roorkee Electrical or Electronics. Here are a few points that justify my inclination towards IIT Roorkee in general and these branches specifically

  • The placement scenario of both the branches is excellent with the highest package of both the branches around INR 1,06,00,000. The average packages are well above 15 LPA.
  • Both branches provide excellent exposure in terms of opportunities and knowledge
  • The location of the Institute close to the IT hubs like Gurugram, Noida, and the other cities of NCR helps establish industry relations and improve placements tenfold
  • The college has a rich coding culture with platforms like SDS Labs, PAG, and IMG making it possible to inculcate coding skills
  • The TPO is very responsible and encourages infant companies and startups to offer internship opportunities to its students.
  • The overall infrastructure of the campus is decent with hygiene maintenance and basic facilities. Being close to the Himalayas, you can occasionally plan trips also.
  • The hostel and food facilities are also good despite the hostels being very old.
  • IIT Roorkee has the oldest and strongest alumni network of all the Engineering colleges in India

All in all, the Institute and the branches are much coveted and should be preferred over the other options you have.

Should I take IIT Delhi chemical or take a drop?

SG
Sushmita Gupta Posted On : April 3rd, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

I am not saying that taking a dropout is a bad decision. Most people who appear for JEE more than once tend to score better after the first time. It is not an issue and don’t let people convince you otherwise.

However, you should have a very just reason for taking a drop. Just because you couldn’t get into your dream branch does not mean, you cannot do well in other branches. In that case, you can consider the CS branch of other 2nd-tier Engineering colleges rather than taking a drop year. Moreover, you will be answerable for the same in your interview, and might work against your favor in your interview.

On research, you will find that the median salary of IIT Guwahati and other engineering colleges is almost on par with that of IIT Kanpur and Madras. There is a difference, but not big enough to make you take a year drop out. Ultimately, only you can make the decision but I have laid down the cards, make a wise decision.

How is chemical engineering at IIT Madras?

SD
Shweta Das Posted On : March 28th, 2023
Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2019)

My sister recently completed her BTech in Chemical Engineering from IIT Madras and being interested in Core only, she shared her experience.

  • Curriculum: The courses under Chemical Engineering usually are Transport Phenomena (Mass, Heat & Momentum Transfer), Reaction Engineering, Process Control & Economics. Most of these courses covered obsolete ideas and idealistic scenarios that were hardly industry relevant.
  • Professors: The best professors teaching core courses are Prof. Shankar, Raghu, and Niket which one gets by luck only. The best professors teaching electives are Prof. Tangirala, Pushpavanam, and Shankar Narasimhan who teach a lot of high-tech stuff.
  • Job prospects: A BTech graduate in Chemical Engineering can expect roles such as Process Engineer in companies like Shell, or a Field Engineer at Schlumberger. Honestly, a UG has fewer opportunities in India and only a higher degree in Chemical Engineering can open better opportunities for you such as R&D roles in companies like HUL, ITC, and Shell.
  • Research: This branch is well known for its research culture both Computational and Experimental. Computational research is conducted in fields like process modeling, signals, multivariate data analytics, and process optimization, whereas experimental research at Chemical Engineering Laboratory and Combustion Research Centre is conducted in pyrolysis, catalysis, nanotechnology, fluidized beds & columns, etc.
  • Miscellaneous: Chemical Engineering students have a lot of free time on their hands which helps them focus on hobbies, side projects, passions, and non-core interests. They are also free from strenuous lab sessions and assignment deadlines.

Overall, the chemical engineering program at IIT Madras is considered to be of high quality and is a great choice for students interested in the field.

How is chemical engineering at IIT Kharagpur?

SG
Senjuti Gupta Posted On : March 28th, 2023
studied at IIT Kgp

I will throw some light on the harsh reality of Chemical Engineering at IIT KGP or in India generally.

  • There is no quality Chemical engineering education in India.
  • There are NO private chemical engineering companies in India.
  • There isn’t a single Engineering college in India that has given any chemical engineers.
  • Most Engineering aspirants from top colleges pursue computer engineering to become software engineers. The companies visiting for placements are not interested in academic credentials but look for the TopCoder and GitHub profiles of the job applicants.
  • Others become Managers in the industry and start earning really well. The companies hiring managers depend largely on the past academic records of the candidates.

Chemical Engineering in India is almost non-existent and the job prospects of the same are nill.

Is it better to choose mechanical engineering at IIT Kharagpur or chemical engineering at IIT Bombay?

AB
Advaith Bhaskar Posted On : March 20th, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India (2000–present)

Getting into IIT is a big achievement only if you manage to choose the right branch for yourself.

You should analyze your ambitions and interests in a particular field and determine what you possibly imagine yourself to be doing in 5 years and then make an informed decision. Clarity of goals is extremely necessary to make this crucial decision of choosing a branch.

If you want to enter politics, then your branch hardly matters.

If you want to become an entrepreneur try to get an idea of the type of company you want to start

Basically, the choice of the branch is strictly a personal preference and cannot be objectively decided.
