How is NIT Silchar for electrical engineering?

DB
Devdutta Bose Posted On : August 25th, 2023
Studied at National Institute of Technology Silchar (2019)

My brother completed his B.Tech Electrical Engineering from NIT Silchar. According to him-

  1. Course Structure - The course structure is good but some upgrading is needed. There is more Power Engineering (for example topics like Power Systems, Machines, Drives, etc.). You should join ECE if you are into Electronics, VLSI design, Embedded Systems, Hardware Programming, etc. But even with Electrical, you will get 6 electives in your senior year to quench your thirst for knowledge. Few labs focus on MATLAB.
  2. Faculty and attendance criteria - The faculty consists of qualified teachers. However, the EE faculty is way more strict than the faculties of other departments at NIT Silchar. EE is the most strict department for attendance. Minimum 75% attendance is mandatory for most courses.
  3. Placements - Core placements aren’t really high for EE students. Only a few students get placed in PSUs. Other than that, EE students can sit for placements in Finance, Analytics, and IT. Business Executive, Managerial, and Sales Executive are other profiles that are open to Electrical students.
  4. Infrastructure and labs - The infrastructure of NIT Silchar is good, especially when compared to other NITs. The UG B.Tech labs are of decent quality.

EE at NIT Silchar is not a department where you can relax. It demands a lot of hard work from its students. But once you show dedication and commitment, this department will enhance your personality and knowledge.

What are your thoughts on food processing engineering at NIT Rourkela?

PJ
Prateek Jha Posted On : August 14th, 2023
NIT Rourkela (2016)

NIT Rourkela's newly launched branch Food Processing has a wide scope for development and research and its worth cannot simply be judged through its placements. It caters to the ones interested in the production and processing of food and maintaining its quality.

The branch covers all arenas of food marketing from developing food and machines to keeping the food safe. It comprises concepts from various other branches too like mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, and Food Science and Engineering.

As there is growth and development in India with respect to Food and Beverage Processing, there has opened up a gate for great research and job opportunities, as well, in the near future or I would say it has already started.

I asked a friend about the placement scenario of the branch and he told me that around 80-85% of students are placed. The highest salary package offered is 17 LPA. Most of the students receive internship opportunities while some prefer going to top foreign universities to pursue higher studies or research.

Some of the core companies visiting the campus for placement are Milk Mantra, IDMC, Tetra Pak, etc. Some of the non-core companies visiting the campus for placement are ZS Associates, TCS, EXL Services, Tredence, Affine Analytics, etc.

Other programs that students of this branch end up going to include Management programs in IIM-A, XIMB, NIBM, BITS Pilani, and direct Ph.D. in foreign universities. Some even go for M.Tech Program in NIFTEM.

So, the B.Tech program in Food Process Engineering is a great choice for interested students considering its increasing demand and scope.

I have got Energy Engineering (Dual) in IIT Bombay and Computer Science in BITS Pilani. What should I opt for?

AG
Akriti Gupta Posted On : August 5th, 2023
lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

BITS Pilani has an effective placement support system, especially in the CSE branch, but in the long run, Energy Engineering at IIT Bombay is the best option. CSE is becoming outdated, and you will end up jobless. So, it is better to go with Energy engineering, which may have a lot more opportunities in the future as it majorly focuses on renewable technologies, economics, and management.

The add-on advantage of IIT Bombay over BITS is the DS Centre, which is for students who want to pursue entrepreneurship and SINE, which helps to build up your own company

So, go with the option IIT Bombay in Energy Engineering

How much percentile do I need to get a call from MDI Gurgaon, IMT Ghaziabad, IIM K, SP Jain, NITIE?

AB
Aditi Bhardwaj Posted On : March 7th, 2023
MBA in Marketing, Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad (Graduated 2018)

To secure admission to top MBA institutes in India, you should aim for CAT percentiles from 85 onwards. Here's the order of the institutes you should target in descending order - IIM K with 97+ percentile, MDI with 96+, IMT Ghaziabad with 90+, SPJain with 85+, and NITIE with as high as possible sectional-wise.

Even though SPJain is a premier institute, it gives a call from the 85 percentile onward, since they focus on overall values that an individual possesses and want students with more values in them. They have 2 group interviews, so they follow a rejection procedure.

NITIE has a sectional cutoff, so it's advisable to have as high as possible sectional-wise, as many people with an overall CAT percentile in the range of 97-98 were not selected in either of their 2 programs(PGDM and PGDIESM) in 2016.

IIM K also has a sectional cutoff of 90+, so it's important to score well in each section.

It's worth noting that these institutes do not have a sectional cutoff, but it's always advisable to have a 90+ sectional percentile to be on the safer side. Aim for high percentile and sectional scores to improve your chances of securing a seat in these prestigious institutes.

How is IMT Ghaziabad's dual country program?

DB
Deepak Behl Posted On : January 25th, 2023
Studied at Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad

IMT Ghaziabad’s dual country program is one of the most coveted courses among its students. Like any other course, it has its own pros and cons. Let’s discuss them further to see the course's worth.

Pros

  • The high fees are worth the ROI you will get
  • The faculty pool comprises professors from all over the world and this broadened the perspective of some subjects.
  • The pedagogy adopted by the excellent faculty makes you fall in love with some very difficult and boring subjects
  • The program has seen an increase in clubs and committees in recent years.
  • Your stay in Dubai is quite productive given you are availing of the necessary opportunities and making the best out of them.

Cons

  • The course is expensive as you have to pay hefty fees as well as additional expenses for your stay in Dubai.
  • The internship placement is a bit unorganized due to the difference in hiring seasons in India and Dubai
  • The campus life is a bit dull in comparison to other flagship courses.

So IMT Ghaziabad’s Dual Country Program is beneficial to anyone who is looking for extra exposure to their MBA program.

What should I know before joining NIT Silchar?

SG
Sudipta Ghose Posted On : August 24th, 2023
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology Silchar (2020)

These are some things you should know before joining NIT Silchar-

  1. Your CGPA is what matters the most over here. Everything else is secondary.
  2. All your past achievements and ranks will be of no use over here. Everything will start from scratch at NIT Silchar.
  3. Irrespective of your branch, you will have to work really hard.
  4. You will have mid-sem within a month of joining and the 6 subjects will be winded up in six days.
  5. You might have been a topper at school, but you can end up becoming an average student at NITS.
  6. You can rediscover your lost interests and passions at NITS through extracurricular activities.
  7. Civil/ Electrical and other branch students pick up coding/developing and gain expertise in the domain for better career prospects. Sometimes a student from another branch is a better coder/ developer than someone from CSE.
  8. You can’t be overly involved in extracurricular activities unless you want an attendance backlog in some course.
  9. While at NITs hostel, you will develop the habit of sleeping very late at night.
  10. Most students at NIT Silchar, except those in CSE or ECE, don’t like their chosen branch.
  11.  Getting above 8 CGPA requires hard work and effort from your side.
  12. There are some unhealthy politics on the campus.

NIT Silchar is an underrated college. However, these points were meant to inform you of the good and bad of this institution.

Does an IIM tag from a newer IIM (say IIM Ranchi) help in a person's career?

AM
Aditya Mahatha Posted On : January 11th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Management Ranchi (Graduated 2019)

The question is too general. Yet I will share my own opinion.

Indeed, IIM Ranchi has the potential to help you clear the obstacles in your career and climb the success ladder. It’s the following aspects of IIM Ranchi that make it a good option to uplift your career

IIM Tag: In this era of tough competition, it’s the IIM tag that helps you avail the finest benefits after an MBA.

Growth: All the news IIMs focus on the general development of its students at large. Unlike older IIMs you can initiate committees and clubs that have never been established before. You can take the reins and enforce student culture at your college.

Long-term benefits: While joining a new institute one should definitely look at the bigger picture. After all, once even IIM Ahmedabad was a new IIM but today it has its own legacy. The same will happen with all the other new IIMs so you shouldn’t lose this opportunity just for short-term benefits.

Placements: We are quick to judge colleges based on its placement statistics. In reality, Management is a field in which lifetime value is considered not salary. Yet if you base your decision on placements this year's statistics are as follows

Particulars

Statistics

Number of Recruiters

250+

Number of Students

325

Highest Salary

INR 32.21 LPA

Average Salary

INR 16.17 LPA

Top Recruiters

Deloitte, Aditya Birla Group, Infosys, EY, IBM

Major Sectors

IT/ITES, Consulting, BFSI

These packages may seem lower than those offered at older IIMs but with excellent work, you can climb the ladder gradually.

Curriculum: The pedagogy is as good as any other top B School. You can gain a lot of knowledge just by attending the lectures conducted by the learned faculty alone.

Some points that might be important to consider against your decision to join IIM Ranchi are

  • The infrastructure is not at par with other IIMs
  • The distance between the campus and accommodation is very much.
  • You will be offered lower packages as compared to older IIMs

However, I don’t think these points can overshadow the plethora of opportunities IIM Ranchi offers.

How many students from KMC Manipal qualify for the USMLE every year?

SM
Sonal Mishra, Posted On : September 28th, 2023
MBBS from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal (2024)

Clearing USMLE requires going through 3 steps. While most students clear the first step only a few are able to clear the second. Eventually, only 5–6 people every year from KMC are able to clear the final step and pursue the course. Students are given clear instructions regarding the approach they should adopt while answering the questions. Video conferences are held by lecturers who specialize in USMLE to train the students. Moreover, KMC is giving coaching modules and some questions to help them prepare for the same.

You can also seek help from your alumni for 3 years of residency in America. Under this, you will look after your 1-year expenditure given that once you complete your study in America, you will also look after the 1-year expense of any KMC student.

So, approximately 5-6 students from KMC Manipal qualify for the USMLE every year.
