All central universities including CURAJ, CUPB are good for Chemistry branches like Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Applied Chemistry. What are the questions asked in an interview for an integrated PhD (maths) at IISc Bangalore?
One of my friends appeared for the integrated Ph.D. Math at IISc Bangalore and shared her experience of the same. A total of 72 students had been shortlisted for the interview and her interview took place on the last day. As she entered the room, they asked for her introduction and her interest to which she told them it was analysis. She was asked the following questions
- Construct a differential function satisfying the following conditions, f(1)=f(-1)=o; f(0)=1, and f(x) is zero everywhere except (-1, 1)
- Group theory question wherein they gave her an order of the group and asked to check the elements of some order
The entire interview was based on the above questions which my friend was not able to answer most of the time and thus did not get selected. However, she learned a lot from that interview and summed the entire experience in these points
- She learned a new problem-solving approach that requires breaking the problem into small cases.
- The panelists here are very friendly and you can even postpone your interview till the last day if you are not comfortable.
- The questions asked to a candidate are never repeated for other candidates.

For the MSc. Cognitive Science program at IIT Gandhinagar, there are two selection rounds, a written test, and a panel interview. The application process starts from the 2nd week of January and based on your application (SOP and Academics), you are called to take a written test in the last week of February.
The written test is the same for everyone. It contains 4 comprehensive-type questions and 1 question on Data Interpretation. The paper is of 25 marks and one-hour duration.
During the interview, a panel of three individuals asks questions based on your branch. For example, if you studied B.Tech Biotechnology, you will be asked questions on it. Some questions are asked from basic Neuroscience and others are asked from the subjects that you studied during your UG.
You will also be asked about your purpose for pursuing this course. This is an important question that will increase your chances of getting selected among students from various educational backgrounds.

Additionally, these hostels have 3 different types of rooms, single, small family, and family. The hostel rooms are allotted on the basis of their availability. Sometimes family rooms are allowed for 2–3 residents.
These hostels have decent facilities and almost everything you want can be procured easily. The Kabini mess in the KABINI Annexe building serves a wide variety of food items like veg, non-veg, salad, juice, ice-creams, chats, etc. But it’s more like a canteen so you have to pay for your food. The staff canteen is attached to the OLD block building and serves diction breakfast and lunch.
Overall, the hostel facilities for PG residents at NIMHANS are great.

Which is better, Applied Mathematics at IIT Roorkee or Mathematics and Computing at ISM Dhanbad?
Both IIT Roorkee and ISM Dhanbad are reputed Engineering institutions offering excellent education as well as opportunities. Being an IIT, Roorkee does have a slight advantage over ISM, though ISM too is going to be an IIT one day.
The infrastructure of both institutes is equally good with IIT Roorkee having a slight advantage over ISM because of its early establishment. However, ISM is fast developing and has a beautiful campus. It’s going to house Asia's largest library soon.
Branch-wise, both Applied Mathematics and MNC comprise Mathematical concepts but with a different perspectives. Applied Mathematics has pure math and only those who want to pursue research in the same should go for it. MNC on the other hand is a blend of Maths as well as Computing (coding) and is more in demand than Applied Mathematics. Its scope is also wider than APM and has better placement opportunities.
Eventually, it’s a matter of preferences and not the credibility and worth of the branch that you should focus on.
