Which is better if one is planning to apply for an MBA/PGDM from IIMs after graduation: ECE and/or CSE at NIT Durgapur, or IT at Jadavpur University? Why?

TA

Let me share with you some important details about these courses/institutes-

  1. NIT Durgapur is a residential campus so you’ll get ample exposure during your undergraduate studies. On the other hand, JU doesn’t even offer IT on its main campus.
  2. NIT DGP is an Institute of National Importance. This makes it more significant on a national level.
  3. NIT Durgapur is seeing a growing number of recruitments in its CSE branch. Startups visit the campus with interesting offers for CSE students.
  4. The student community of NIT Durgapur is more diverse.
  5. NIT DGP has no political interference. JU, on the other hand, is heavily influenced by state politics.
  6. In terms of extracurricular activities, JU is a better choice.
  7. The CSE/ECE departments of NIT DGP lack good infrastructure, have inconsistent course structure and content, and have a low teacher-student ratio. These departments lack quality research work.
  8. Phd.s in the CSE department of NIT Dgp are low in number.
  9. But NIT DGP carries the much-valued ‘NIT’ tag.

That being said, I feel you are at a very early stage of narrowing down your goals and aspirations to this extent. Enter your UG with an open mind, and an aim for self-discovery. Right now, you have a picture in mind of doing an MBA. But I don’t think you have a proper idea of the different specializations in this degree.

You should have made a clear decision by the end of your 3rd year. Before that, pursue internships and discover your field of interest. Right now, look for the institute that will offer you the best technical education and the best future prospects.

Why did you choose NIT Warangal ECE over NIT Jamshedpur CSE?

TD
Tezal Dahiya Posted On : September 4th, 2023

One of my friends had similar options and she ended up choosing NIT Warangal ECE over NIT Jamshedpur CSE. She claimed that choosing the right college is as important as choosing the right branch. The official rankings put NIT Warangal much higher than NIT Jamshedpur. The overall NIRF ranking of NIT Warangal is 53 out of 200 colleges in 2023 while that of NIT Jamshedpur is 101 out of 200 colleges in 2023 which is almost double.

My friend was from Jharkhand and could have easily got NIT Jamshedpur with Home State Quota but he decided to study hard for NIT Warangal. You should give preference to the branch when the colleges in question are somewhat at a similar level. Where the difference is as high as between these two, the college with higher rankings should be given preference.

So make your choice wisely!

Is IIIT-Delhi better than DTU for ECE?

Namrata Das Posted On : October 7th, 2023

Yes, all the branches in IIIT Delhi are considered to be better than DTU CSE. Although DTU has a better brand name, it’s way behind IIIT Delhi in terms of placement, quality of crowd, and research culture. IIIT Delhi's faculty and infrastructure are way better than DTU's.

IIIT Delhi has a very flexible curriculum allowing students to choose subjects of their choice, unlike the rigid curriculum of DTU. Moreover, the IIIT Delhi curriculum is CS-tailored so you won't have to study Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in the first year. Students are taught Data structures and Algorithms along with many programming languages-Python, C, Java, and Shell Scripting in the first year itself. ECE students at IIIT Delhi are taught more practical and less theoretical knowledge.

The best part is that students are free to choose CSE courses in the 3rd and 4th year which is not possible in DTU. The best option would be to pursue a Master's in CS and a Bachelor's in ECE.

Ultimately, the choice depends on your preferences.

Is it worth doing Mtech in ECE from the new IIT's like Jodhpur, Mandi or Bhubaneswar?

KR
Kamal Rana Posted On : March 16th, 2021
M.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay

Yes, IIT Mandi offers a good curriculum, infrastructure, and placement for M.Tech programs, though they are newly associated. For ECE, IIT Mandi had only Communication and Signal Processing before but has started Power Electronics and Drives, and VLSI streams recently.

Key Highlights:

  • In the Signal processing stream, image processing, digital signal processing, speech processing, and random processes are covered. On the communication side, information theory, and analog-digital communication concepts are discussed.
  • IIT Mandi has its own well-equipped communication lab, with national instrument kits 2920/ 2921, lab-view, and a lot more useful simulators and instruments. Image and speech processing requires algorithm development which is done using MATLAB. IIT Mandi has accommodation of its own High-Performance Cluster (HPC) for high-computing tasks.
  • Students from M.Tech programs usually get internship opportunities in R&Ds mostly.
  • From the perspective of placement, most internships are converted into per-placement offers.
  • In an addition, IIT Mandi has excellent weather throughout the year, with amazing natural beauty.

So, it can be concluded that M.Tech ECE at IIT Mandi can be considered as a good option for students.

What would be better option for me: ECE at NIT Durgapur or a Bachelor's of Technology/Master's of Technology dual degree at IIEST, Shibpur?

AR

I did my dual degree in Aerospace Engineering from IIEST. I will list down the comparison points between an ECE from NIT Dgp and a DD (Aerospace Engineering) from IIEST-

  1. Placement opportunities are much brighter for ECE in India. This is because there are very few core companies for Aerospace Engineers over here.
  2. IT companies prefer ECE students over Aerospace students. Also, R&D jobs are difficult to grab for B.Tech/DD students.
  3. Both are Tier 2 colleges and offer almost the same facilities. JU has better facilities than both of them.
  4. A dual degree from IIEST isn’t a great option. Rather, try to pursue your PG from a TIER-1 college.
  5. If you do good research work in your B.Tech, you’ll have better chances of pursuing your Masters from a Tier-1 college/ foreign university.

Try to figure out what interests you more. My personal recommendation is that you pursue B.Tech ECE from NIT Durgapur.

Which choice is better: Jadavpur University CSE or IIT Bhubaneswar ECE?

TD
Tezal Dahiya Posted On : June 22nd, 2023

If you plan to change to CS, it is quite difficult to shift from EE to CS at IIT Hyderabad. It is easier for other branches to change to CS.

Mechanical and Chemical students get CS during branch change, but the chances are less for Electrical students. This is the experience of one of my friends at IIT Hyderabad.

CS at IIT Hyderabad is better than CS at other new IITs. IIT Hyderabad is one of the best among the new IITs. IIT Hyderabad is showing tremendous growth.

Here is the latest comparison data (as of 2023) for you to choose between the two options:

CS IIT Bhubaneswar

SP
Sharanya Pal Posted On : September 13th, 2023
Studied at National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur (2015)

ECE at NIT Hamirpur is considered a pretty good branch with a decent placement scenario. The faculty is well-educated and friendly. Recently there has been a change in the Director of the campus and also the H.o.D. so the situation is expected to get even better.

The institute has developed better industrial relations with companies either through Skype or through campus visits. Moreover, the professors have become more passionate and helpful. Recently, two teams from the ECE Department won a National Competition.

How is mechanical engineering and ECE at nit agartala?

TD
Tezal Dahiya Posted On : September 20th, 2023

As a B.Tech Mechanical student at NIT Agartala, I will be sharing a bit about my branch-

  • Facilities- NIT Agartala offers one of the best workshop facilities. The workshops are equipped with up-to-date machines. Two of these are- Machine Shop and Sheet Metal Shop.
  • Faculty- The faculty is a mix of good and bad teachers. Some might appear a bit hostile, but you’ll have to manage with them. Others are very helpful and caring, and will always provide guidance when approached.
  • Placements- Placement-wise, Mechanical, and CS are the best branches over here. Skilled students end up with multiple offers too. Almost all eligible students of B.Tech mechanical get job offers during campus placements. Well-known brands like Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum, Tata Motors, Maruti, Ashok Leyland, Fiat, Tata Technologies, L&T, etc. visit the campus with job offers for mechanical engineers.

Mechanical does get boring at times. However, if you are deeply interested in this branch, NIT Agartala is a good choice for you.

What are some pros and cons of NIT Calicut that one should know before joining (ECE)?

SK
Shailja Khandelwa Posted On : August 21st, 2023
B.Tech. from National Institute of Technology, Calicut (2019)

Every coin has two sides and likewise, every college you join will have its unique strengths and weaknesses. Knowing these beforehand helps you manage things and prepares you better. So here are a few pros and cons one must be aware of before joining ECE at NIT Calicut

Pros

  1. The ECE department of NIT Calicut is one of the oldest and most well-established departments of the institute and is also accredited by NBA. It's second only to the CSE department and the competition here is intense.
  2. The standards of examination papers setting and vivas conducted are excellent and evaluate the students' performances pretty well.
  3. The department is well-known for its high-tech embedded systems lab. The lab mechanic as well as the facilities offered help the students conduct cutting-edge research under the guidance of the lab assistants and mechanics.
  4. The faculty of the department is highly experienced and learned with thorough knowledge of their respective fields. They have a knack for delivering concepts in a well-organized manner.

Cons

  1. Being one of the oldest departments, its buildings and overall infrastructure is deteriorating. The entire department is spread across various buildings and it takes time to visit faculties.
  2. The academic level of this branch is high so you cannot survive solely by mugging up the concepts. You need to have in-depth knowledge of the concepts. You might find some courses to be extraordinarily challenging so be prepared for the workload.
  3. A few Ad-hoc faculties destroy the momentum of the course through their poor pedagogy.
  4. The lab sessions are again very challenging and getting the right results may be more challenging than expected.

Overall, the NIT Calicut ECE department will bring in a number of challenges but if you are interested in the branch you will get to experience an unmatched learning environment and opportunities.
