What is the minimum percentile for making it to HRM in XLRI (not for getting a call?)

GS

studied at Xavier School of Management

XLRI Jamshedpur is one of the premier management institutes in India, known for its two-year postgraduate management programs - PGDM (Business Management) and PGDM (Human Resource Management).

XLRI accepts scores from multiple entrance exams such as XAT, GMAT, and GRE for admission into its programs. The admission process includes two stages - the first stage involves shortlisting candidates based on their entrance exam scores and profile, and the second stage comprises a written ability test (WAT), group discussion (GD), and personal interview (PI) rounds.

To make it to the HRM program at XLRI, one needs to clear the first stage of the selection process, which involves obtaining a minimum percentile in the entrance exam. The minimum percentile required for the HRM program at XLRI varies each year and depends on various factors such as the number of applicants, the difficulty level of the exam, and the overall performance of the test-takers.

However, based on previous years' trends, candidates generally need to score above 90 percentile in XAT to get shortlisted for XLRI's HRM program. It is important to note that clearing the minimum percentile requirement does not guarantee admission to the program, as the final selection also considers the candidate's profile, work experience, academic performance, and performance in the WAT/GD/PI rounds.

In summary, the minimum percentile required for making it to XLRI's HRM program varies each year and depends on the number of applicants and the overall performance in the entrance exam. Candidates generally need to score above 90 percentile in XAT to get shortlisted for the HRM program.

Is it all right to choose IIM, I or K over XLRI just for the IIM brand?

AR
Aditi Roy Posted On : May 20th, 2023

I will never suggest you go for IIM Kozhikode over XLRI. Because of the establishment of new IIMs, the impact of its brand has deteriorated. IIM Indore and IIM Kozhikode aren’t at the same level. Apart from IIM ABC, the only good IIM is Lucknow. If your academic records are average then only you can consider XLRI, that too is a great choice. If you are financially weak, then FMS is the one for you.

However, the harsh reality is many companies still prefer IIM students over other B-schools. This partiality results in MBA aspirants flocking to IIMs. IIM's. If you look carefully, XLRI too is an excellent institute and is second only to IIM ABC and FMS. Additionally, those seeking specialization in HR, should not loot beyond XLRI.

So, don’t reject XLRI BM (Jamshedpur) except for IIM A, B, C, and L. One may prefer L over XL because of the IIM tag, else both are similar.

In my opinion, the preference order should be

IIM A=B=C>>L>XLRI>FMS>>IIM I>IIM K

Do you know anyone who got into a top b-school (IIMs, XLRI, JBIMS, NM, IIFT, FMS etc.) with average UG percentage?

Yes, I do know a friend who managed to get calls from many top B Schools despite having an average Undergraduate Score. Her profile looked like this

  • 10th- 76%
  • 12th- 68%
  • UG- 64%

Although her marks witnessed a gradual decline, she was lucky enough to study at XLRI. Past academics are considered as one but not the major factors at XLRI, unlike IIMs that focus a lot on past academics. A good XAT and GD-PI score can compensate for your poor academic record at XLRI, FMS, and JBIMS. NITIE is a top B School that does not consider past academics at all. My friend with her average profile managed to convert NITIE, XIMB, and all the IIMs except for the top ones obviously. So we can safely assume that admission into these top B Schools is possible even with an average profile provided that you score excellently in the CAT or XAT and the GDPI round.

Which is best, FMS, XLRI, or IIM Lucknow?

DTU'20 | CAT'21: 99.63%ile | XAT'22: 99.68%ile

Making a decision about a school is similar to creating a regression model, where the features serve as the parameters and the coefficients represent the students' preferences.

Batch size: The placement at XLRI Delhi is combined with the JSR batch. As a result, the combined batch size (XLRI JSR BM + XLRI JSR HR + XLRI Delhi BM) is quite large but still significantly smaller than IIM Lucknow. FMS is the clear winner in terms of batch size. As a result, FMS > XLRI > IIML.

Group of peers: This is a highly debatable and relative parameter. XLRI has no reservations, and some argue that people are chosen solely on merit, whereas FMS and IIML have more than 50% reservations. As a result, a better crowd.

The CAT score: It is extremely important to FMS. You'll mostly find a more educated crowd there. IIM Lucknow has very diverse selection criteria, similar to IIM Bangalore. In their selection criteria, they consider gender and academic diversity, previous academic records, work experience, and so on, ensuring a consistent and diverse crowd. Now it all comes down to personal preference, FMS > IIML > XLRI.

Tag: IIM Lucknow has an old IIM tag and is well-known worldwide. XLRI and FMS are both very old institutes with strong brand identities. Personal preference once again. IIM > XLRI > FMS.

Campus Life: FMS has no hostels and a very small campus. You're basically a day student there. IIML = XLRI > FMS.

Finance: Lucknow has more financial opportunities than the other two in terms of profiles available and companies visiting campus. FMS >= IIML.

XLRI or IIM Lucknow?

ES
Ekta Singh Posted On : February 13th, 2023
Student, traveler, foodie, and lazy.

Comparing XLRI and IIM Lucknow in terms of placements can be difficult unless you have personally gone through the process at either institution. Both institutions have a variety of firms that come to recruit from them. However, it depends on your career aspirations and interests. If your focus is on HR, XLRI is the better option. However, if your interests lie in other areas such as marketing and finance, IIM Lucknow may be a better fit as it has more firms that regularly visit across these domains, particularly in consulting.

In terms of infrastructure, IIM Lucknow has better on-campus facilities for both recreation and academics. However, it is worth noting that the infrastructure at both institutions should not present significant problems.

Finally, when considering the alumni network, the IIM tag opens more doors. XLRI is a well-respected brand, but the sheer number of IIM Lucknow alumni in the job market makes it stand out.

In conclusion, the decision between XLRI and IIM Lucknow largely depends on whether or not you want to study HR. If you do, XLRI is the better option, otherwise, IIM Lucknow is a better choice in terms of placements, infrastructure, and alumni network.

Are there any international opportunities for students with HRM from XLRI?

AM

XLRI placements witness international offers for HRM each year. Novartis, American Express, HUL, Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, Alghanim, Mondelez, etc. are some of the major recruiters that offered international profiles for HRM at XLRI, in past. Few multinational companies also give the opportunities to work in an Indian location for 2-3 years and then move to an international location.

Is it okay for an IITian to study in XLRI? Is it worth leaving IIM K, I for XLRI?

XLRI is among the top B-Schools in the country. After IIM A, B, and C, it is the preferred MBA destination for most aspirants. XLRI placements and academics are top-notch. Students of the institute receive a median CTC of around INR 29 LPA.

XLRI is also among the oldest management institute in the country and has an excellent brand presence. So, leaving IIM K, I for XLRI will be definitely worth it.

What is the selection process for XLRI like?

DK
Deepika Kunwar Posted On : May 29th, 2021

The selection process of XLRI is not that difficult. Let me explain it simply, sharing one of my friend’s experiences. His selection procedure went something like this -

Firstly, two papers will be taken in the XAT which is the same for everyone. Paper 1 includes sections like -Decision Making, Verbal and Logical Ability, Quantitative Ability (QA), and Data Interpretation (DI). Paper 2 includes sections like - General Knowledge and Essay Writing.

Once the exam is done, the next question that arises is how much do you need for XLRI. The sectional cut-off is 95-96 percentile. Check the following table for a detailed cut off:

Sections

HRM Cut off

BM Cut off

Verbal

90

90

DM

80

80

QA

70

90

Next, for GDPI, you will get the topic and will be asked to start building a structure. All you have to do is give a clear, concise but excellent contribution.

The Interview experience can be different for everyone –

  • There is a generic question about your work, studies, etc., a reason to choose HR/BM, your interests.
  • Did you read the newspaper today? Your general awareness of the world, and current trends.
  • And finally the most important question, where do you see yourself in the next 5 years.

These are some of the questions that can be asked. Other than that your work, studies, projects, participation, training, skills, etc. will also be discussed.

For preparing XLRI, HRM interview, you need to have a good command of the current budget-related issues. This could be done by reading the newspaper thoroughly and be up to date with the current affairs as they are the most predictable topics to be asked by the interviewer.

From the bachelor’s degree, select any two subjects of your interest and prepare them well. Try to improve the communication skills, be a good listener and a proactive person. Opt for coaching like CL for better guidance. Learn how to think analytically and logically and don’t rush to answers.
