My cousin used to be a student of XLRI Jamshedpur. She decided to apply to the institute after having sufficient work experience. In her opinion, before applying to an elite management institute in India, one must take work experience into account.
Irrespective of being a student of IIT or not, if you have a work experience of preferable three years, or even two in some cases, you can apply for admission in a premier management institute. Institutes like XLRI and IIMs look for applicants who have work experience of a minimum of two years.
It will be helpful if you have a clear idea of which sector you want to work in after you are finished with your management degree. Let’s say you want to work in consulting then check the placement offers at XLRI, IIM K, I and see the no of consulting offers in the recent 2-3 years. The institute with more consulting offers is the best option. You can find this record on their official website or Linkedin.
Now choosing IIM is completely dependent on your opportunities if you do not end up going to your current option. In case of not meeting the minimum years of experience, you can try again next year.
If you have more than 3 years of experience, try to check you can do your MBA from abroad. You can go for the choices that you have if you don’t want to go abroad.
As for if you should choose an IIM other than A, B, or C, that depends on your plan. Ask yourself where you see yourself in the foreseeable future. If your goal is to work in the private sector, then for a job switch your alma mater will matter less than your previous organization.
