How are the XLRI GMP placements for candidates who came from a non-IT background?

SS

studying B. Tech from Banasthali Vidyapeeth (2019).

XLRI is a really good institute to go for. The ethos, culture, and diversity are all enigmatic. One of my friends studying there suggests that you can learn and grow simultaneously.

  • Placements for non-IT background students are comparatively less. Usually, the domain consultant role is offered.
  • These domain consultants also get a chance to go abroad for further work experience.
  • Nowadays, companies are also hiring, even being unsure about the candidate’s past work experience.
  • You just evolve as your potential individuality begins to blossom. This is the most significant advantage of being in XLRI.
  • Academics and case studies are generally the same across the board.
  • The admissions process is a little stringent and filters out the “right” individuals.

It is not a disadvantage to not be an engineer. A consulting career requires more analytical ability, business awareness, and thought process.

All you have to do is work a little harder to achieve your goals. So, go ahead and start preparing for your career and you'll make it. Ultimately your performance will matter rather than being an IT or a non-IT background.

What are my chances of converting an XLRI call with a 99.9 percentile if I assume my GD/PI are going to be average?

SR
Srinivas Rao Posted On : July 28th, 2021
PGDM from Xavier School of Management

The XAT score acceptance for the selection amounts to about 60%, and if one includes the other essentials checked as part of the profile like Essays, GK, Academics, Work Experience, etc; that comes to 15%. The GD/PI round amounts to 25%. However, the bottom 10% score received in GD/PI rounds may not be considered for final selection.

If you score a 97 percentile and someone scores a 99 percentile then clearly the topper with the 60% XAT score will sail through with ease. When evaluated further, the 97 percentile means that that your XAT score is about 45% and the other students are 60%, so there is a margin of 15%, hence the advantage of the topper is clearly visible by the 9% rise.

It will finally come down to the GDPI score which has a 25% weightage. The 9% advantage of the topper student will be a challenge to overcome, and for that, you must excel in this round because the topper, most probably, will prepare averagely for the interview.

All the top B-schools, except FMS, emphasize the PI score during the selection process so that even the top candidates get rejected based on their profiles and scores.

What are the chances of a fresher to get selected in FMS, XLRI, MDI with less than 60% in 12th?

AC
Abhirup Chatterjee Posted On : September 14th, 2022
PGDM in Human Resources, Xavier School of Management

It will be difficult to get into colleges such as FMS, XLRI, and MDI with less than 60% in 12th. But it’s achievable. FMS assigns 10% weight to 10+2 scores. So, if you manage to score around the 99.5 percentile in CAT, you will have a chance of getting shortlisted. You need to perform well in the GD-PI round as well. XLRI and MDI assign 15% weight to past academics and work experience.

So, try to work on your profile by adding extra-curricular activities. Also, prepare well for entrance tests and the GD-PI round.

How worthwhile is the XLRI post-graduate program for a certificate in entrepreneurship management?

SG
Souvick Gupta Posted On : May 20th, 2021
Studied at Xavier School of Management

Post Graduate Programme for Certificate in Entrepreneurship Management is a 6 months duration course at XLRI. As my brother belonged to the 2017-18 batch of the PGP CEM course, here are some first-hand experiences he had.

  • As it's a tri-semester ordeal, each having about 7 to 8 subjects you will be evaluated on the basis of a mix of individual/group assignments and the finals.
  • You will be taught subjects related to what the initial year of a regular MBA will cater to, along with some unique ones like Technopreneurship and Agripreneurship to state a few.
  • The teaching is mostly theoretically driven so you'll have to refer to core books for each subject for the most part.
  • Class presentations will expose you to public speaking and explaining concepts which is a good way to build confidence and speaking to an audience.
  • You'll be taught by the same profs. who teach the regular MBA guys.

Overall, this is a good course if you already come with an initial idea about which field or genre you want to work in. Job seekers should completely avoid this since it wouldn't hold much value in their CVs except for a prestigious B-school name. Even if you are a fresher, you won't find this course optimum due to lack of experience. However, if you are a family business owner, you can definitely get insights into how to tackle problems and solutions occurring in your venture.

Is there any ragging at XLRI Jamshedpur or MDI Gurgaon?

AA
Aakriti Ahuja Posted On : February 13th, 2023
Studied Post Graduate Diploma in Management at Xavier School of Management (Graduated 2015)

The question of ragging in colleges, particularly in reputed institutions like IIM, XLRI, and MDI, is often depicted in a negative light in films and media. However, in reality, the situation is not as dire as it is portrayed. While it may be true that ragging is more prevalent in lower-ranked colleges, reputed institutions have strict policies and regulations in place to prevent such behavior.

Reputed colleges are known for their rigorous curriculum and strict deadlines, leaving little time for students to engage in extracurricular activities. In the first few weeks, the workload may not seem as intense, but as the course progresses, students will find themselves with very little free time to interact with their peers. Some colleges even schedule classes in the evening, making it even more challenging to balance academics and social life.

The rigorous academic environment in these institutions is intended to prepare students for the stress and pressures of the workplace. Assignments are often given with strict deadlines, which may sometimes be at odd hours, and the workload is high throughout the program. This means that seniors may not have enough time to interact with junior students.

In summary, it is important to approach the topic of ragging with a realistic understanding. While it may occur in some form, it is unlikely to be as severe as it is often portrayed in films and media. Rest assured that prestigious institutes have strict policies in place to prevent such behavior and neither students nor the institutions want to take unnecessary risks. It is also important to keep in mind that seniors can be valuable resources in both academic and professional life.

Do XLRI HRM students get placed in general consulting roles also?

GS
Gargi Sinha Posted On : October 1st, 2022
PGDHRM from Xavier School of Management

Yes, XLRI HRM students get placed in general consulting roles also. According to recent statistics, around 15% of students from HRM get placement opportunities in consulting firms. But most of these consulting jobs offered were either from Big4 or niche HR Consulting firms such as Mercer, Hewitt, Hay, etc. No sales/marketing roles are offered at XLRI. Management Trainee program is the only way to achieve a successful sales stint.

How does the XLRI GMP program compare with one year MBA programs of IIMs and SP Jain?

RP
Raina Pathak Posted On : May 28th, 2021
studied at Xavier School of Management

One of my friends at XLRI said that you should know the facts before diving into any conclusion and making a decision. According to him, GMP is not a good course. It has its own set of flaws.

  • There mainly is no institutional support for placements of students pursuing GMP, unlike the BM and HR course.
  • Students from a core background are advised not to join the course.
  • Choose this course only if you are willing to work as a business analyst in certain second-tier service companies.
  • This course is somewhat only for IT students.
  • If you are employed in companies like Coal India, Indian Railways, or NTPC. You will remain unplaced for over 6-7 years of operation.
  • You will not receive an opportunity in the GD interviews while competing against various IT students.
  • The course pedagogy states that it is a general management course. That means it lacks fundamental items like operation, finance, and strategy.
  • Only 20% of the students obtain premium jobs, while the rest have to join sales or service jobs.
  • Several jobs are seen to be cornered by “placecommers” and certain similar individuals.
