What is it like to do chemical science and technology at IIT-Guwahati?

RD
Rithi Dasgupta Posted On : May 4th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Information Technology, Guwahati (IIITG)

Chemical Science and Technology is a great choice for those who have a genuine interest in the subject of Chemistry.

  • It comprises inorganic, organic, and other aspects.
  • It covers aspects of drug design, medicinal chemistry, material science, environmental science, and even molecular biology.
  • It is a research-oriented discipline
  • It's a contemporary of Engineering Physics
  • Its syllabus covers topics like nano-chemistry and nano-technology which is the next big thing in the engineering sector

Prospects

  • The prospects of CST are not at or with that of Chemical Engineering unless you are going to opt for non-core jobs.

Chemical Engineering, on the other hand, is a blend of a profusion of physical chemistry along with a mess of physics, math, and many other things. It entails the processes that help maximize efficiency, increase profit, and focus on the best possible way for the production of any product in any industry.

Prospects

  • The prospects of Chemical Engineering are better than CST and its students receive better packages.

Ultimately, it’s all about if you are going for core or non-core jobs. Either way, Chemical Engineering is a better option than CST unless you have a serious inclination toward Chemistry.

Why are IIT Guwahati people competing with IIT Roorkee and IIT BHU people?

AB

Based on different factors, you can categorize the IITs into various groups. For example, academically, the top IITs are IIT Kanpur, IIT KGP, and IIT Bombay. Similarly, IIT Guwahati is known for its top-notch accommodation facilities with single rooms allotted to every student. The campus encompassed by natural beauty is second only to IIT Roorkee.

Universities like IIT BHU and IT BHU despite being old, haven’t been able to reach the level of IIT Kanpur or Kharagpur. However, it does give a slight edge to IIT Delhi in terms of academics

Honestly, every student is aware of the actual credibility of his institute and chooses it anyway.

Either the Institute aligns with his preferences or that particular IIT was the only IIT he could make it into. So IITians don’t usually fight amongst themselves unless it’s an outsider trying to trigger them.

Is IIT Patna CSE is better or mathematics and computing at IIT Guwahati?

AR
Aditi Roy Posted On : May 4th, 2023
lives in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India

Whether IIT Patna CSE is better or MnC at IIT Guwahati, depends on what you want to do after your graduation.

If you have an interest in pure and abstract Math and want to do research in Maths, theoretical computer science, Set theory, Group Theory, and Complexity Theory, then the IIT Guwahati MnC program is the best for you.

However, if you have an interest in coding and want to become a competitive programmer, or a software developer, and research in areas other than Theoretical Computer Science, then IIT Patna CSE is the right choice for you. Extensive research on every CS field is done here.

Basically, the academic workload of the MnC program at IIT Guwahati is too much with a very rigid curriculum that will spare you no time to focus on coding. No doubt, the MnC program too has excellent job opportunities in finance, banking, and software jobs. But, the demand for CS students is much more than MnC students and is expected to be increasingly so over the next few years.

Common courses of CS and MNC include theoretical computer science, some being computer networks, and operating systems while the rest of the courses are related to abstract Maths/pure Math and are highly rigorous in nature. Contrary to popular belief, there aren't many common concepts between MnC and CS.

IIT Guwahati will give you a slightly better campus life in comparison to IIT Patna considering its scenic campus and high-level fests organized by the institute.

Are parents allowed in hostels of IIT GUWAHATI at the time of registration?

AM
Anirudh Mukharjee Posted On : May 5th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IITG)

Yes, parents are allowed in the hostels of IIT Guwahati at the time of registration. Parents visit their children to help unpack their stuff and organize them,

However, parents are not allowed to spend the night at hostels and thus ask your parents to book a hotel to avoid any sort of inconvenience. Usually, the rules in the girls' hostel are more strict than the boys' hostel and only mothers are allowed inside their hostels.

What you can do is, book a hotel room for your Prerna on tracing Guwahati. There are many hotels near the railway station. After completing the registration and accommodation formalities, let your parents go back to their hotel while you can stay in your room for the night. You can have lunch together by paying at the hostel mess.

Do IIT Guwahati CSE students get similar opportunities for foreign university/company internships compared to IIT Bombay?

AJ
Advait Joshi Posted On : May 3rd, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

My friend was a CS student at IIT Guwahati and he failed to secure a summer internship. According to him, only 3 students from the entire batch of CS second-year students got foreign internship offers. When he asked his friends at IIT Bombay about the same, he came to know that 6 students had got foreign internship offers.

There are a number of reasons why older IITs offer more opportunities than II Guwahati. Let’s explore some of these reasons

  • Unlike IIT Guwahati, older IITs have collaborations with top foreign universities. For example, IIT Kanpur’s SURGE program has tie-ups with Caltech and provides funds for undergraduate internships.
  • Professors are ready to accept students for internships but the lack of funds makes it impossible to secure a paid foreign internship.
  • Another major problem is the lack of focus on research at IIT Guwahati. Students at IIT Bombay have completed great research projects whereas IIT Guwahati students have no research accomplishments up their sleeve. Their CV is extremely lacking and does not fetch good packages.

All in all, the department doesn't encourage foreign internships and older IITs offer way better opportunities compared to IIT Guwahati.

How is it possible that IIIT Bangalore's mTech CSE Average package (27.5LPA) is greater than IIT Guwahati CSE Average package (27.04LPA)?

AB
Aditi Banerjee Posted On : May 3rd, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

The difference in the packages is due to the inflated figures released by the institutes. For instance, Microsoft offers 42 LPA packages but the actual in-hand salary is only 13 LPA.

Also, IIIT Bangalore has no core job offers whereas, in IIT Guwahati, you can also explore other domains apart from IT like finance, consulting, analysis, data science, etc. It is exactly why Inthunk placements should never be the criteria to judge the credibility of an institute or program. Rather, we should start considering in-hand averages.

Another possible reason for IIIT Bangalore's better placements is the excellent research-focused culture that provides great knowledge and scope.

What do people think of IIT Guwahati?

SG
Srimona Gupta Posted On : April 28th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (2020)

Owing to its unique location, IIT Guwahati is considered infamous among other IITs and there are many rumors regarding it.

  • Firstly, it’s located in the North-East part and thus parents of South India don’t deem it right to send their children here.
  • Being an earthquake zone, it’s considered a risky place to study.
  • Surrounded by mountains, lakes, and trees many people think that IIT Guwahati lacks the much-needed sports facility
  • People think it's not possible to hang out with friends in the city due to the construction of the new bridge across the Brahmaputra.
  • People think they won’t be able to enjoy their holidays within the campus though there are many tourist spots a few kilometers from campus like Shillong, Dawki, etc

Most of these assumptions are not true and IIT Guwahati is actually a very good option for Engineering.
