Can I take the CAT after completing my dual degree from IIT Bhubaneswar?

TD
Tanmay Das Posted On : August 14th, 2020
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM) (2019)

Yes, after completing your dual degree from IIT Bhubaneswar, you can take the CAT exam to get admission into IIM or Indian Institute of Management. Generally, a good CAT score gives you a better chance of getting admitted to IIM.

The placements of dual degrees are slightly less than the B.Tech students. Many of the companies do not make any distinction between both the degrees and sometimes BTech graduates get more packages than dual degrees. On the other hand, teaching and research options are more for dual-degree candidates. Studying a dual degree from IIT Bhubaneswar offers much more than a standard engineering degree. It encourages students to develop new technologies, which will not only have a technological relevance but also a social impact. It will also help in the overall development of your personality.

Should I choose IIT Bhubaneswar MEC or IIT Guwahati civil?

AJ
Adwait Jain Posted On : August 14th, 2020
Ph.D. from Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar

First of all, it depends on your interest whether you want to pursue engineering in Mechanical or Civil, and only then you can decide the better college. As the engineering branches are different it’s difficult to pick one college over the other.

Comparing the two courses in terms of placements offered last year, we see 83% of the Mechanical branch students got placed in IIT Bhubaneswar with average CTC 11.4 LPA. 77% of the Civil students in IITG got placed last year. The average package offered in IIT Guwahati was around 11 LPA while the highest went up to 39 LPA.

Being the older IIT, the infrastructure of IITG is good and the placements for both the core as well as the non-core sectors are also quite good. IIT Bhubaneswar has been showing good numbers in recent years and is developing gradually.

You can also look for some other options for mechanical other than IIT Bhubaneswar. If you manage to get a good score in Mains, you can look for admission in old NIT where you will get better future opportunities also good placement packages. While IIT Guwahati being an older institute is expected to attract many of the major recruiters from all the sectors and provide good CTC.

So, choose the college based on your branch of interest.

Which is the best, IIT Bhubaneswar (EE) or IIT Guwahati for civil?

RT
Rima Tandon Posted On : August 14th, 2020
Studied Mechanical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar (2021)

Both the choices IIT Bhubaneswar(EE) and IIT Guwahati(Civil Engineering) have their own significance.

Coming to the specifics, the Electrical Engineering in IIT Bhubaneswar is quite good. The placement stats are also better than most of the new IITs. In the year 2019, around 86% of students got placed from the Electrical Engineering branch. The official average package for the batch 2017 as released by the institute was 8.5 LPA, which is more than a decent package for a fresher. A good number of Core companies, software companies and PSU’s hire Electrical Engineers (EE) from IIT Bhubaneswar. The subjects taught in Electrical Engineering, have their applications in day to day life. Hence this subject always has potential in the future.

Coming to Civil Engineering in IIT Guwahati, the civil branch may not be as lucrative as CS, IT branches. But it does offer some great opportunities. In core engineering and the Pvt sector, there are very few companies that offer decent packages. In 2019 around 77% of students got placed in Civil Engineering. The average package for this branch is around 6.6 LPA to 7 LPA. Hindustan Construction Company, L & T, DLF, Tata Projects, Gammon India are some of the major recruiters for Civil Engineering.

If you intend to join public sector, then Civil is the best branch as there is very less competition compared to other branches. You can go for PSU's through GATE or join Engineering Services. Also if you are strictly after govt. jobs, then you can take civil at IIT Guwahati.

How can I change my course from a dual degree to a B-Tech degree in IIT-Bhubaneswar?

Neerendra Singh Posted On : August 13th, 2020

Most IITs do not allow changing courses from dual degree to a B.Tech degree. However, you can shift from a B.Tech degree to a dual degree. The rules regarding the change of course in IIT Bhubaneswar are the same as other IITs.

In IIT Bhubaneswar, only those students will be eligible to be considered for branch change after the second(spring) semester, who have-

  1. Completed all the credits required in the first two semesters of their studies.
  2. CGPA not lower than 8.5 at the end of the second semester.

Students in the 4th year of B.Tech courses are also eligible to apply for a change of branch in any engineering (4-Year or 5-Year dual degree) course. But the selection is strictly based on merit of the applicants. Generally, applicants who rank in the top 1% are considered first. In case of ties, the deciding factor is the JEE rank of the applicants. Students who are interested in changing their courses may enlist up to 5 choices of branch according to their preference.
