Is biotechnology at IIT Madras a good course? Does it have better placements in India?

Satyam Purwar Posted On : February 5th, 2024

Biotechnology is rooted in Biology, not Mathematics or Analytics. If you are even remotely interested in Biology, you’ll easily understand the courses. Else, you’ll struggle in this branch. Biotech has a lot of opportunities in research.

IIT Madras Biotech will give you some industry exposure too. You’ll get equal opportunities as other branch students for non core sectors (finance, economics, consulting, analytics, management, coding, etc.). But the opportunities are very limited for core jobs.

DoMS IIT Madras is the best option for MBA. The management faculty of the institute are highly experienced. Faculty-student ratio is 1:7. Other than faculties there are also TAs to help you with any problems. Due to the small batch size, every student gets the required attention from faculties.

Who is the most friendly professor in IIT Madras? Why?

A
Admin Posted On : February 3rd, 2024

My brother is an alumnus of IIT Madras. During his time, Professor Kamakoti was one of the friendliest professors at IITM.

Whenever sir caught someone sleeping in the class or coming late for the lecture, he would simply crack a joke and lighten everyone’s mood. He was an absolute master of his subject. The only thing which frustrated him was the lack of interest among students towards lab coursework.

My brother is not sure if sir still teaches at IITM, but he always fondly remembers sir.

How is the food at IIT Madras?

MB
Megha Banerjee Posted On : March 28th, 2023
B.Tech. Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2019)

IIT Madras has a 4 meal per day program. There are both North Indian and South Indian menus.

North Indian menu:

  • Breakfast: Bread, omelet, cornflakes, coffee, milk, sometimes jalebi Or dosa
  • Lunch: Rice, chapatis, dal, vegetables, salad, curd at noon.
  • Evening snacks: Coffee and tea
  • Dinner: Same as lunch with additional lemonade or buttermilk

South Indian menu:

  • Breakfast: Idli-sambar, dosa, upma, pongal-vada, etc. Extras include bread-butter and jam, cornflakes, milk, and coffee.
  • Lunch:  Rice, sambar, rasam, curd, some vegetables, phulka, and some gravy. Buttermilk is also served sometimes.
  • Dinner: Diner is almost similar to the lunch menu

The food served at IIT Madras is of good taste, quality, and hygienic. There is no compromise in the quality although one might get bored of the same menu every day. Still, it is much better than the food served at other IITs and NITs.

How was your experience of doing an MS in the mechanical engineering department at IIT Madras?

TB
Tithi Banerjee Posted On : June 17th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2021)

My brother pursued his MS in Chemical Engineering from IIT Madras back in 2016 and these are some of his experiences for the overall MS program offered at IIT Madras-

  1. The MS program at IIT Madras is extremely fulfilling for students who want to pursue a career in research by going for a Ph.D. and Post Doc.
  2. The MS program is different from the M.Tech program. The M.Tech program is highly coursework oriented and is a better choice for securing a job.
  3. IIT Madras has, over the years, made efforts to give MS graduates an equal chance at placements.
  4. MS students tend to focus a lot more on their thesis as compared to M.Tech students.
  5. MS students are given an extra year to submit their thesis (2+1).
  6. An MS student, by the time of placement, will have worked extensively on a scientific topic and published at least one article in a reputed journal, or his article will be under review.
  7. This research work holds benefits during placements. The MS student’s CV is made impressive and data analysis and scientific reporting skills are highlighted. A little smart work will help you convince your interviewer of how these skills make you a suitable candidate for the offered position.
  8. Very few IITs offer an MS degree and many employers are unaware of this course.
  9. The MS degree becomes demanding and tough because you need to get an article published in an international journal to obtain your degree.

Though not specific to the Mechanical branch, I hope this information about the MS program at IIT Madras helped you gain important insights regarding the same.

Do you regret joining IIT Madras?

AR
Abhinav Rawat Posted On : July 27th, 2021
Studied at IIT Madras (2018)

I have a friend who is an alumnus of IIT Madras. Here are some snippets of his experience at the institute.

My friend spent 2 years studying on the IIT Madras campus. But when he left the IIT Madras campus it was like leaving behind some of the best times of his life.

The student environment in IIT Madras, students, as well as its facilities is a few of the good things which you will be going to miss after leaving. Because you will not get back student life and the days you spent in the institute.

The only thing he regrets is the life he had to leave behind.

What is general question pattern set by IIT Madras?

DB
Deepan Bose Posted On : July 31st, 2021
B.Tech CSE in Lovely Professional University

There is no general question pattern set by IIT Madras. The paper is not just set and organized by a single IIT.

A number of professors are selected from every department of random IIT’s and they make the sets. Various sets of paper are made and finally, one is selected by the head of the committee.

It is a very common misconception that the paper is set by a single IIT so their professors can provide some insight into it. No guesses can be made regarding the paper, so give it your best shot and have faith in the preparation you have done.
