How is IIT Madras hostel life?

If you are planning to pursue your higher studies at IIT Madras, you can expect a great hostel life experience. Here are some of the excellent facilities:

Freshman year: single room shared by two people
From the second year onwards, most people are given single rooms, some have shared but bigger rooms
Hostel change can be applied for at the start of the semester with valid reasons
The hostel library has good novels and chosen books by seniors
Books can be issued for the whole semester if no one needs them
Music Room in almost every hostel for music enthusiasts
The TV room has a television set (the default is Bravia) and a good sound system
Subscription of channels in every language is a plus point
Friendship in IIT bonds up fast over sports
General sports equipment room available for active evenings playing with friends in the hostel quadi.

The lush green cover of the campus is one of the highlights of IIT Madras. It boasts of having one of the best infrastructures which is a mix of traditional and modern elements. The classrooms and labs are quite cozy and modern, except for a few which are non-AC. You will be taught the latest teaching methodology and techniques. The institute has over 100 well-equipped laboratories and 23 Research Centres of Excellence.

Some of my friends are IIT Madras alumni and they were able to give some insight into the hostel life on campus.

Brilliant Internet/ DC++: You would have individual rooms with access to the internet 24×7. You will also have DC++ access.
Rooms: Your room would contain a cot, cupboards fit into the room walls, a chair, a table, and a ceiling fan. A LAN port would be available along with some plug points. However, in what condition you find the room depends upon how the person living before you.
Common washrooms: The washrooms are common and cleaned at least once a day.
Girls are permitted to enter boy's hostels: Certain hostels permit girls to enter the boy's hostel from 9 AM to 7 PM. The warden is responsible for any discretion and that is why most of the hostels do not provide this freedom. The reason girls are allowed into boy's hostels is because of academic reasons. Boys are permitted into the girl’s hostel only in the hostel night event.
TV: TV is present in the common room of hostels. The room is vibrant when there's a cricket/football match.
Sports: Hostels include table tennis rooms and pool tables. Some hostels also include cricket, football, and basketball courts on the premises. The gym is free for all. Common grounds also include basketball, hockey, volleyball, skating, and cricket.
24×7 canteen facilities: The canteen is operated by IRCTC and serves till 12 AM.

Ramu Tea Stall, International café, HUL canteen are some of the places where students hang out most of the time. You will definitely come out of IIT Madras making lots of memories.
