The passing marks at IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) are
Theory - 30 out of 100 / 18 out of 50
Assignments - More than 50%
If you fail to score 50% in assignments, you will have to resubmit them. If you score above 30 out of 100 or 18 out of 500 in theory, then you will pass without having submitted assignments.
Percentage Calculation - Assignments- 30% weightage and Term End Examination- 70% weightage for FST (Foundation Course in Science & Technology) and FHS (Foundation Course in Humanities and Social Sciences).
It is not required at all.
You need to go to the study center to get your books (which are also available at regional centers), submit assignments (which are mandatory), fill out your examination form (which can also be done at regional centers), and attend practical classes (if you have any practical subjects).
In some cases, regular classes are held at the centers for specific courses. They are attended by some of my friends. However, because it is an open university, it is entirely up to you whether or not to attend them.
IGNOU Public Administration material is very simple and lucid, covering the majority of the UPSC Public Administration syllabus. Before moving on to books by Mohit Bhattacharya and Administrative Thinkers like Prasad & Prasad, IGNOU material is a good starting point. The same is true for the other subjects. So, if you are reading the subject for the first time, you can go through them to get a basic understanding of it.
It is recommended to read blogs on the subject, consult standard textbooks used for the specific course at university, and, most importantly, form a study group. For serious discussion on topics, this group should stay connected on a messaging platform like Whatsapp and the social media of your choice. If you do this religiously, your IGNOU and UPSC journeys will be smooth and enjoyable!
Disciplined UPSC candidates refer to the study material of this Open University's PG program honestly.
Below are the following steps:
A. Go to IGNOU's assignment page and download your assignment.
Take care to only download assignments for the current year. Many students make the mistake of downloading the previous year's assignment, only to discover this on the day of submission. If you download the incorrect assignment, all of your hard work will be for naught.
B. Worksheets
A4 sheets with rules on both sides are standard in all study centers. If you intend to submit in punched files, you can purchase punched sheets. IGNOU's regulations clearly state that assignments should be written on white sheets only. Printing is not permitted. You must complete your entire assignment. Printouts of complex diagrams and graphs, on the other hand, can be pasted.
Your teachers can best advise you on this because it varies from course to course.
C. Writing Assignments
To be honest, most students copy their assignments from the internet or their friends. You can use whatever method you want, depending on how accommodating the teachers at your study center are. It is recommended that you write your assignment yourself. The reasons are straightforward:
a) You will read and try to understand the topics presented in books as you work on your assignments. If you sincerely complete your assignment by reading and understanding concepts on your own, you will have completed more than half of your exam preparation.
b) Your assignment will be one-of-a-kind and may make an excellent first impression.
c) You do not need to be concerned about the viva.
If you choose to copy your assignment, please prepare thoroughly for the viva. You can get good grades in assignments if you give a good viva.
D. Set a deadline.
When you download an assignment from IGNOU's website, the deadline is usually written on the front page of each course's assignment. Although the deadline specified in the assignment is always extended by about 15-20 days. To be on the safe side, complete your assignment well before the deadline specified in your assignment.
E. The Submission Date
Organize your assignments neatly and orderly in files.
Go to your Study Center, where you will be given a receipt to fill out. It will be stamped and signed by your study center once completed. Keep the receipt safe until the results are announced. If your assignment grades aren't updated on IGNOU's website, your receipt will come in handy. After that, turn in your assignment to the teacher. They will begin checking it while also considering your viva.
F. Final approval
When the results are announced, double-check your grade card to ensure that your assignment grades have been properly updated. If you have any questions, please contact the regional center using the assignment submission receipt.
The truth about IGNOU is that it does not care about you, and its success rate is much lower than that of other universities. IGNOU will be much more difficult than any other university; even your regular course may be much easier than what you will experience at IGNOU. It's not so much the degree that you'll get from IGNOU as it is the experience of how harsh and demanding life will be, how things will go wrong and you'll have to make them right. The terms provided by IGNOU may appear simple, but soon everything will begin to unfold; there will be success and setbacks. You will have to rework things over and over again, or you will fail. Exams are easy but they become tougher as you progress. You might get (low) grades as you've never gotten before, just because IGNOU is a miser in terms of giving marks.
Even though IGNOU exams are not difficult, here are some factors that contribute to their difficulty: The study material is never delivered on time; if it is, you will not receive your entire syllabus for the current semester; frequently, the study material arrives in the following semester. The exam schedule is appalling. There will be times when you have two exams on the same day, times when you have exams on consecutive days, and times when you only have one exam at the end of the month. Exam papers are not difficult (if you know the subject), but the point is that there is no specific standard that IGNOU has set for its marking scheme. As a result, even if you have answered questions correctly and to the best of your ability, you may still lose.
DU SOL is more commonly known to the students and also has an easier education structure. However, IGNOU is more student-friendly. The checking of exam papers is carried out systematically and IGNOU also provides better exam results than DU SOL.
IGNOU gives internal marks to the students for assignments.
IGNOU offers various UG and PG courses. Whereas, SOL offers only a few selected courses.
My friend opted for her BA in English from SOL, DU. She left SOL DU after a year because of SOL’s poor management system. She was allotted a study center and exam center which was around 25-30 km away from her home, making things difficult and inconvenient for her. When she switched to IGNOU she realized that the staff is very helpful and solved her admission discrepancies in the most friendly manner. She had the freedom to choose her regional center and her study center, and her exam center was near her home.
These are some more advantages of studying at IGNOU-
Thus, based on these advantages, you should opt for IGNOU over SOL DU for completing your degree.
IGNOU is believed to be better than SOL in so many ways. Some of them are mentioned below:
All of the approved programs are well-known.
Simple admission, re-admission, submission of examination forms, submission of assignments, and other processes. The majority of these can be completed online.
Nominal Charge.
Excellent study materials.
If you misplace your study materials, you can purchase them online from GPH, Neeraj, or another publishing house.
30% of the marks are for assignments, and the rest are for the exam. Because assignments are similar to examination question papers (i.e., sample question papers), you are also preparing for the examination while working on them.
Any query and doubts can be easily got answered by visiting study centers. For IGNOU students, each center has a coordinator and other staff.
Study centers can be found even in the most remote areas, and you can usually find one within 15 kilometers of your home.
IGNOU is also very flexible in that it allows students to complete their degrees in a reasonable amount of time. You are not required to complete all exams at once. It is possible to divide it into semesters. This will also aid in the removal of mental burdens.
The procedure is extremely simple. Obtain admission, complete assignments, and register for the exam at the desired exam center. After passing the exams, which can take between three and six years. Following that, you will be given a mark sheet and a provisional certificate. To obtain an original degree, you must wait at least six to twelve months for the convocation to be held by IGNOU, and you must pay a nominal fee of Rs 600-900 for registration and certificate.
If you are unable to attend the convocation, your certificate will be mailed to your home address.
If your degree certificate was not delivered to your home, no worries. Simply go to the IGNOU office in Maidan Garhi, Delhi, and show your university-issued ID card to obtain your degree certificate. They will verify your information and issue your degree certificate. However, you will be required to pay convocation fees.
Here is the process:
a) Complete the online form.
b) Make a fee payment online.
c) You will be assigned to a study center based on your preferences and availability.
d) Your ID card and books will be mailed to you.
e) Attending classes is not required. Weekend and holiday classes are available.
f) You must submit your assignments to your study center. You can prepare your assignments using the IGNOU materials.
g) Then you must complete the exam forms for the subjects for which you wish to write the exams. You may enter any number for that specific year. The minimum period for a Masters's degree is two years, and the maximum period is five years.
h) Take the exam and find out the results.
i) Repeat the process the following year.
The process is very simple once you understand it effectively.
Most IGNOU students associate IGNOU Assignment submission with IGNOU Term End Examinations. They are not, however.
Aside from one connection: to appear in the respective subject's TEE, one must first submit an assignment; there are NO other connections.
1) IGNOU Assignments and IGNOU Examination Form are not in any way related:
That is, you can choose to submit IGNOU assignments for all subjects while not appearing in the TEEs for any of them. However, because registration for a paper is only valid for two years or four semesters, it is important to continue passing the TEEs. Otherwise, one must re-register for the paper, which is still incomplete (Not passed).
2) IGNOU Assignments that have been submitted and completed (passed or cleared) are valid for the duration of the IGNOU program:
This also applies to the Maximum Duration to Complete the Program. For example, IGNOU MBA takes 8 years. Thus, if a student fails a paper or re-registers for a paper, he or she only needs to reappear in the TEE (if he has already passed the Assignment). As a result, there is no need to resubmit the assignment for the aforementioned paper.
3) Regardless of when you plan to appear in TEE, you must submit only the most recent IGNOU Assignments:
You cannot submit a previous assignment that you wrote but did not submit at the time.
Regardless of whether you intend to take the upcoming TEE or not, it is always advisable to submit completed assignments to the Study Centre or Regional Centre.
4) The Late Fee is not for Late Assignment Submission: There is no fee to submit the IGNOU Assignments.
5) Assignments that have been submitted and passed (Complete Status) are valid for the entire IGNOU Programme, but one must pass a paper within two years of registration: If a student fails to complete or pass a paper within two years or four semesters, he must re-register. This doubles the cost of the paper. Aside from the financial burden, there are no other consequences to re-registration.
