Which college is better, IIT BHU or IIT Gandhinagar?

YD
Yash Dasgupta Posted On : August 14th, 2020
M.Tech BioEngineering Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (2021)

IIT BHU and IIT Gandhinagar both are decent IITs. IIT Gandhinagar has a better NIRF ranking as compared to IIT BHU. Although IIT BHU has a lot of Engineering courses to offer, the overall infrastructure and environment are not as conducive as IIT Gandhinagar. Also, the recent year’s cutoffs are comparably higher for IIT Gandhinagar.

Furthermore, IIT Gandhinagar has a unique and distinctive “Foundation Program” which helps students get acquainted with academic life and college environment. Besides, the faculty of IIT GN is also among the best. On the contrary, there is a shortage of faculty members in many branches (including Civil Engineering) at IIT BHU.

The campus location of IIT Gandhinagar is also comparably better as compared to IIT BHU. It is pertinent to note that the campus of IIT BHU is merged with BHU, which makes the campus a crowded place for students. Also, the placement scenario in both the colleges is almost at the same level.

Although IIT BHU being much older than IIT Gandhinagar, offers a huge alumni base. IIT GN might be considered a new IIT by many, but the progress that it has shown is humongous. It also provides a conducive environment for research scholars and has an overhauled infrastructure (including labs). Both colleges have their pros and cons, so it is hard to choose one institute over the other.

What power does the vice-chancellor of BHU have over IIT BHU ?

SD
Sandeep Das Posted On : August 14th, 2020
Bachelor in Technology Computer Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2021)

Currently, the Vice-Chancellor of BHU has no power over IIT BHU as both are independent institutes. Although, they are united together under the name of Banaras Hindu University. The two institutes take their decisions independently. The Vice-Chancellor of BHU has no say over IIT BHU. But there was a small twist in all this. A few years back the Vice-Chancellor of BHU was also the Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT BHU. Chairman of the Board of Governors is the most powerful person in IIT BHU. No decision can be taken without the permission of the Chairman. Since the same person was working at both these positions, the Vice-Chancellor of BHU was the most powerful person in IIT BHU but it’s not because he was the Vice-Chancellor of BHU, but because he was also the Chairman of Board of Governors of IIT BHU. But now things have changed as different persons are working in these positions. Mr. Rakesh Bhatnagar is currently the Vice-Chancellor of BHU and Prof. P. K. Jain is the Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT BHU. Mr. Rakesh Bhatnagar does not have any power over IIT BHU.

Which is better CSE in thapar or ceramic in IIT BHU ?

SR
Srijeeta Roy Posted On : August 14th, 2020
B.Tech from Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (2020)

Ceramic Engineering and CSE are two completely different fields of study. CSE offers better placement and packages as compared to Ceramic and though both these institutes are well-reputed the IIT tag offers certain advantages. So it’s quite difficult to choose an institute over the other.

In terms of internships, since Thapar is a private college, they have their own standards regarding schedules. In the internship session of 2019, almost 1200 students got placed. The internship session of IIT BHU includes many big names such as Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, Morgan Stanley, etc.

In terms of placements, IIT BHU has performed very well. In 2019, the highest package offered was 1.03 Crore per year in domestic and four students received international offers of 1.53 Crore. Whereas, Thapar received the highest package of 39 LPA, which is quite low but the average packages of both colleges are almost similar. IIT BHU placement statistics show that 171 students chose core companies.

Thapar has better hostel and mess facilities whereas IIT BHU’s campus is spread over 400 acres, which is 150 acres more than Thapar’s. In terms of connectivity, IIT BHU has better connectivity and therefore can be assumed to have more exposure. Both colleges are good and have their own advantages. So pick the branch of your choice.

In case, offline classes start, the basic amenities that you need to pack are as follows.

  • Cloths, bedding, a first aid kit, ATM card.
  • Pack all the documents that you may need.
  • You can bring your laptop too. But for the first semester, it won’t be that necessary. You can do most of the course work using your smartphone.

Also, pack smart, don’t bring too many things along with you. You can buy a lot of the iteams in the market near campus.

Yes, IIT BHU is an autonomous body, just like any other IITs. But certain powers are vested in BHU.

IIT BHU shares the same campus as IIT BHU. BHU and IIT BHU shares the same auditorium, badminton-squash court, swimming pool. Although IIT BHU has separate hostels, grounds, library, gym, etc. Also, IIT BHU organizes separate placements, fests, and other events.

IIT BHU Varanasi is unique in a way that it resides inside BHU and the campus is quite prodigious. The campus is an open campus which at first might seem odd since it contains a tourist destination, the New Vishwanath Temple of Lord Shiva, but soon you will fall in love with it.

You do not have to feel deserted at IIT BHU, since it has other institutions of various disciplines like IMS, Law, Commerce, Arts, Management, etc. Being a student of IIT BHU, you can also do a diploma course in the above-mentioned disciplines along with your BTech. It has a number of branches from conventional to non-conventional ones. Students can also meet lots of people from other disciplines during fests, events, etc.

Apart from the excellent placements and huge alumni networks, there are other factors like the mess food of IIT BHU is one of the best. One can also bring their own motorized vehicles.

Although it doesn’t make its placement report public as it is done by most other IITs. Pre placements offer (PPO) offered to the students have scaled a record high this year, indicating a bumper recruitment season where leading employers hired through the tried and tested internship route.

The institute witnessed a jump in the number of PPOs to 116 from 108 in the last year. Several companies made early offers for the first time like Walmart, Bajaj, and OYO also offered PPOs.

Traditional giants like Goldman Sachs, Intel, Microsoft, Qualcomm, Citibank, Samsung, Bajaj, EXL, OYO, Vedanta, and General Electric will visit the IIT BHU campus for recruitment along with first-time companies like Apple, RB, and Sprinkler.

With over 45 company's coming on the first day, the number of offers made was 266, which is the highest number so far. The companies that visited the campus of IIT BHU on day 1 were Apple, Microsoft, Google, Uber, Goldman Sachs, Intel, etc.

How do I get an internship at IIT BHU?

SM
Saurav Mishra Posted On : August 14th, 2020
B.A Pyschology from Banaras Hindu University (2020)

Getting in touch with the professors could be the easiest way to get an internship at IIT BHU. You can send an email to the professors with whom you want to carry on your work. All the contact details of the professors and department related personnel are available on the official site of IIT BHU. Now, mailing those profs. could be a difficult and tedious task because you may not get a reply right away. A solution for this is keep sending reminders at some intervals. Also, your statement of purpose ( SOP ) should be enthusiastic, keen, and well written. If you have any prior research experience at your college, then it would be of great help. If you know some professors personally, then the chances of getting the internship are high as well. IIT BHU also offers direct internships for summers, so just keep checking their official website.

Lastly your CGPA should be quite good and you should have good recommendations from the professors at your college.

Which institute is better between IIT(ISM), Dhanbad and IIT BHU?

AM
Adrija Mahapatra Posted On : February 17th, 2022
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2020)

You should compare these two institutes based on the performance of the branch that you are interested in.

ISM is different from other IITs, in the sense that it is well-recognized for Mining, Geology, Petroleum, and other related branches. Other core branches like CSE, Electronics, etc. started after it got the IIT status. So, the institute will need some time to catch up with IIT BHU for these branches.

While IIT BHU has had many years to establish a brand name for these branches. It also exhibited many high packages over the years. Although the infrastructure at the institute is poor.

So, if you are interested in branches like Mining, Petroleum, etc. then you should choose ISM. For mainstream branches, IIT BHU is better.
