Is it better to do chemical engineering at the IIT Madras or computer engineering at IIT Indore?

RS
Ronit Sharma Posted On : March 31st, 2023
Lives in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India

Both the programs, Chemical Engineering at IIT Madras and Computer Engineering at IIT Indore offers excellent courses and opportunities. However, the choice of the program is more of a personal decision as it depends on career goals, personal interests, and other criteria. It's not a hidden fact that Computer Engineering has a wider scope in almost all sectors in comparison to Chemical engineering. So obviously it is a safe option, but what if you take a specific branch just for placements and then regret it later?

If you take Chemical you can also change your branch to Computer later but it won't be possible Vive Versa. You must decide after considering all factors and most importantly your interests. Find out what makes you happy the most out of coding, data analysis, or research in a chemical lab, finding solutions for medicinal products, health, synthetic materials, and so on.

There are examples of IITians dropping out to chase their dreams after realizing they were chasing the wrong branch. Only you can identify your innermost driving factor that will sustain your happiness later on in life.

What are the opportunities for IIT Madras biotechnology?

AG
Aditi Goswami Posted On : March 31st, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2018)

Frankly speaking, Biotechnology is yet to make it big at least in India. It's in its initial stage and still requires a lot of time to be at par with other branches of Engineering. India has little to offer in this field and thus job opportunities are limited or almost non-existent.

Outside India, Biotechnology is in full bloom offering splendid courses in the most renowned foreign universities. One of its fields, Synthetic Biology is one of the most pursued fields abroad and offers excellent opportunities.

Here is the bright side, IIT Madras has ties with many foreign universities thus opening gates for its students to step out and gain exposure in the form of semester exchange programs which is not possible at IITR.

Let me warn you that Biotechnology as a field has limited or no placement scope owing to its research-oriented nature. So if it's a high salary you are after, it's not too late to look for another branch as this field is only for the passionate.

How do I decide between IIT Delhi and IIT Madras for engineering physics?

AR
Aditi Roy Posted On : March 31st, 2023
lives in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India

The curriculum of Engineering Physics at both IIT Madras and IIT Delhi is equally instructional and well-structured. The demand for this discipline has witnessed a steady increase over the past few years.

If I had to choose between IIT Delhi and IIT Madras, I would have opted for the latter. This is because

  • IIT Delhi lacks in terms of technological instruments and its infrastructure is not on par with IIT Madras yet.
  • The hostel facilities are very substandard and the quality of food served in mess is pathetic in IIT Delhi
  • The sports facilities are highly lacking and the infrastructure is also average
  • There are illogical restrictions on the use of the Internet.

In my opinion, unless it’s a matter of locational preference, go for IIT Madras over IIT Delhi any day. You won’t be able to enjoy your college life to the fullest here.

How is MS by Research at IIT Madras different from Phd? Considering both are research focused programs.

RB
Ranjini Banerjee Posted On : March 30th, 2023
Research Scholar at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

The basic differences between MR at IIT Madras and Ph.D. at IIT Madras are

  • Research: MS program has less research work than Ph.D. It is considered an extended version of MS and many MS students go for a Ph.D. afterward.
  • Degree: An MS degree is awarded if the student has a minimum of 1 international conference paper and if the panel is satisfied that the work has met the standards of the institute. Whereas a Ph.D. is awarded only when the student has a minimum of 2 international journal papers and if the panel is satisfied and considers it as per the standards of the institute.
  • Coursework: An MS student needs to take at least 5 graduate courses whereas a Ph.D. needs to take 4. Additionally a Direct Ph.D. or M.S.+PhD. needs to take 8.
  • Duration: The time taken to complete an MS program is between 1.5-3 years whereas for a Ph.D. and M.S. + Ph.D it takes 3-5 years. This duration might be increased in case a student is unable to complete it in the given time frame.
  • Viva: In Ph.D., you are required to pass a challenging Viva Voce, while in M.S. you need not. The difficulty level of this viva varies from department to department.
  • Stipend: Under the HTRA scheme, an MS student gets INR 12400 while a Ph.D. student gets INR 25000.

Despite these differences, the general routine and schedule of both MS and Ph.D. are similar. Ultimately, more than your program, your research topic and performance will matter.

Which one would be better for an MBA for a fresher, DoMS, IIT Madras, or IIM Amritsar?

HS
Harsha Singh Posted On : February 6th, 2023
MBA in Business Strategy, Top Business Schools (Graduated 2011)

It is recommended not to join any of the 2 mentioned colleges, neither DoMS, IIT Madras nor IIM Amritsar, as the placements at newer Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are not yet on par with top colleges. Placements at newer IIMs are still evolving and it may take at least a decade for them to stabilize and for the demand for MBA degrees to increase in the long run.

It is important to note that Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are not generally considered to be top colleges for MBA programs, although IIT KGP and IIT Bombay have made a name for themselves. These institutions are primarily known for their strong focus on technology. If you are considering top MBA programs, IIT Madras is a good option due to its brand recall.

The institution has the potential to attract top tech companies to offer MBA roles as well. Older IITs have a well-established reputation which newer institutes may not yet have. It took almost 3 decades for IIM Lucknow to reach its current level of prestige, and that was without the level of competition that newer IIMs face in attracting the best companies and roles on campus.

Which course is better (package-wise): HSEE at IIT Madras or IPM at IIM Indore?

SG
Sandip Guha Posted On : September 7th, 2021
MS by Research from International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (2020)

HSEE at IIT Madras is humanity and social sciences course so don’t expect a satisfying placement after pursuing this course. If you are willing to opt for civil services after the end of this course, then you may go for it. The highest package offered so far has been 12 LPA. Your placement package is determined by your caliber in the field.

Whereas IPM is a 5-year integrated course at IIM Indore. It endows you with an MBA after graduating from this 5-year course. Placement opportunities are tremendous in this course. The average salary ranged around 15.6 LPA for the students of the IPM batch.

Which college has better placements for an M.Tech in ECE, IISC or IITM?

DS
Deeraj Shah Posted On : March 21st, 2022
M.Tech from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (2020)

IISc and IITM both offer good placements opportunities for M.Tech ECE. Same core companies visit the campuses, especially for ECE branches of Micro-Electronics and Electronics Systems Engineering.

Due to the small batch size, competition is much less at IISc. Some of the major recruiters were Texas Instruments, Cisco, Analog Devices, etc. The highlights of IISc M.Tech ECE placements report an average CTC of INR 15 LPA.

Dring the 2021 placement drive of IITM, M.Tech students received an average CTC of INR 16.84 LPA.

How has the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) enhanced the reputation of Chennai as one of the premier cities in India?

ST
Sneha Thakur Posted On : July 5th, 2021
Studied at IIT Madras (2019)

To answer your question in the most simplified manner, I would target the primary factors which are as follows:

  • IIT Madras happened to be one of the oldest institutes in the city. This is the centre of attraction and it is a big deal for students.
  • A city like Chennai is a good place to relax and unwind. From any sort of historical, spiritual location to even recreational ones, which include - Mahabalipuram, MGR Memorial, Pondicherry are certain places that can help you bounce back in life.
  • The food can be a little tough to get adjusted to. But don't stick to the college canteen or mess, go out and experiment. It will help break the monotony of life.
  • Chennai, as a city is excellent for women too as it is safe for them to reside in and explore ahead.

This is what makes this city even better for others to love. This is how the presence of an IIT can change the way people look at the city.

What is the procedure to convert into a dual degree from B.tech at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM)?

VA
Vishal Ahluwalia Posted On : November 22nd, 2020
B.Tech. Computer Science, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (2012)

IIT Madras (IITM) is ranked 1st in the Engineering category by NIRF Ranking 2019. They have a strong and highly qualified faculty of 630 members, most of them being PhD holders and have a student strength of 6638.

BTech in IITM is a 4 year full time undergraduate course. Students after completing their 10+2 and securing a JEE Advanced rank can apply for a BTech program.

BTech and MTech dual degree is a 5 year course which will give students a both a Bachelors and Masters degree in Technology or Engineering.

Process of Conversion into a Dual degree

  • The change will be initiated at the end of the 1st semester.
  • Overall GPA of the 1st semester will be considered.
  • This might depend on the vacancies.
  • The process involves filling out a form and signing with the Faculty Advisor and HoD.
  • The strength of a class should not fall below the existing strength by more than 10% and should not go above the sanctioned strength by more than 10% percent.
  • The cut off of the CGPA is 7.5 and higher.
  • After the 7th semester it is not allowed to change the degree from BTech to Dual degree.

The advantages of taking a dual degree (BTech + MTech) gives the students an opportunity to receive both degrees with a year to spare. Unlike doing BTech and MTech separately which will take 6 years to complete whereas a dual degree will take 5 years to complete.
