While Civil Engineering is a widely popular branch of engineering in India, a B.Tech. in the same at IIEST, Shibpur is a highly demanded degree. One of the main points of attraction for the interested students is the quality internships that they can avail as civil engineering students at IIEST, through networking with the wide alumni base, situated both in India and abroad.
About the Placement Cell:
The Training and Placement cell at IIEST, Shibpur is responsible for bringing internships, jobs, and vocational training opportunities to its students. It even grooms the students for the same.
The cell also brings its students paid and/or summer internship opportunities including the DAAD Scholarship-Working Internship In Science And Technology.
Statistics:
Around 40-60% of the students at IIEST get internships during their study period at the institute. Consequently, students also get jobs and/or valuable industry contacts through the said internships.
In 2016, a 3rd-year student from IIEST Shibpur got an internship at Google Headquarters in the USA after competing with the best young minds of the nation, from top colleges like the IITs, for the spot.
Students that are interested in VT ( vocational training ) can contact their professors at IIEST, who usually have contacts at some of the top civil construction or design firms.
Texas Instruments offers internships on campus to 3rd-year students. The selection procedure for the same is rigorous. Internships are also offered by CESC.
About 78% of the students from Civil Engineering (Batch of 2016) got an internship at Hindustan Construction Company.
Microsoft offers internships to IIEST students every year as well.
Apart from these, students also look for internships/training opportunities independently at various companies to learn the workings of the industry and increase their expertise.
Therefore, B.Tech. in Civil Engineering at IIEST is a decent option for students looking for fantastic internships to cultivate, practice, and improve their skills and efficiency while studying, so that they are prepared and fit for the job by the time they start working. It also gives them practical experience in the real world, which helps one learn. IIEST Shibpur enables this through the opportunities it gives its students and its strong alumni network.
IIEST Shibpur is one of the oldest institutes in India, which is mentored even prior to establishing the first IIT in this country. It is an institute with different feelings rather and a respected institute in India.
The infrastructural facilities and the IT department itself are excellent, and the most important thing is that Microsoft recruits from this institute. Besides, you will receive a good internship opportunity and the placement percentage is also satisfactory. One student even made an internship opportunity in Google, California. If it is compared with CSE, then IT is somewhat behind, as a student from the CSE background gets higher CTCs. But IT has diversity, which is also good.
Additionally, IT in IIEST is one of the branches in which students can face a bitter rivalry, although the student’s quality of this branch is outstanding (far better than the CSE in most cases). The faculties of IT are also excellent like the CSE department.
The placement of both of these institutes is also very good. The main difference is seen in the academic curriculum, which is negligible in most cases.

If the student considers IIIT Gwalior, then it can be mentioned that it is undoubtedly a good college, but it is quite behind in most cases if it is compared with IIEST in recent days.
Thus, the student should try for IIEST; if they get a chance, they must go for it without thinking of any other options.
A senior of mine has told me that a score of 225 would be more than enough for getting admission in electrical in IIEST Shibpur. The admission criteria are the same for applicants belonging to the home state (West Bengal) or from any other state. With that score, you can also get CST and ECE with ease.
You can also compare trying to solve the paper for the previous years for getting acquainted with the pattern. Difficulty of the exams also somewhat determines admission, especially when cutoffs change every year. According to the cutoff trends of recent years, a score of 225 should be enough to secure admission.
Jadavpur University and IIEST Shibpur are both considered as one of the best institutes in India to pursue Engineering. As for which institute to choose, you should decide that depending on your preferences and requirements.
People usually choose NIT Durgapur just for the tag of the institute. If your aim is to pursue higher education which will help you in landing a good job, then IIEST Shibpur will be an excellent decision. The institution boasts of having a legacy of more than 160 years. In addition to that, the NIRF also holds IIEST Shibpur in high regard. The institute has a fantastic research environment and the placements are getting better year after year. The alumni network of the institute is one of the biggest and you will come across alumni in every field.
IIEST Shibpur is also offering degrees in B.Tech as well as the option to opt for Dual Degree after the third year. The institute is far ahead of NIT Durgapur. Obviously, as an IIEST Shibpur alumnus, my acquaintance is kind of biased towards the institute. IIEST is also a centrally funded institute that has an INI tag and will always be ahead of NIT.
Many of the professors have connections with professors in foreign universities which will help you in bagging MS and research opportunities. In terms of research, faculty, infrastructure, rankings, IIEST often comes among the top ten in India.
IIEST Shibpur is a well-known institute in India. Although it has faced some challenges in recent years, it has been making progress. Aerospace Engineering is the newest department at IIEST, having been established in 2011 by branching out from the Mechanical Engineering Department. Despite being a small batch, the department has a lot of potential.
It's important to note that ranking colleges based solely on placements is not always accurate. Research output is often a more important criterion to consider.
IIEST Shibpur has better faculty and facilities than SRM, and at a much lower cost. So, if you're looking for an Aerospace Engineering college, IIEST Shibpur is worth considering.
Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology Shibpur (IIEST Shibpur) is the second oldest engineering college in India. It offers 45 courses in Engineering, Management, Science, and Architecture. Admissions are conducted through central exams conducted by UGC like JEE, XAM, etc. IIEST has over 250 faculty members including regular guest faculty. It hosts 4000 students every year for their higher education. Even though the institute is engaged in a number of fields, it is most famous for its B.Tech and M.Tech course of Engineering.
Ranking and Placements:
While NIT Jalandhar, NIT Durgapur, NIT Silchar and IIITM Gwalior are one of the best institutes of engineering in the country, there are some parameters of difference in all these institutes. IIITM Gwalior and IIEST are the highest-ranking institutes by the NIRF rankings however, NIT institutes have brand names that assist more in placements and further studies. For the same reason, the placements at NIT Jalandhar and NIT Silchar are the highest among the lot at 87.8% and 86.12%. Apart from this, there are fundamental differences in course wise performance of the institute.
Courses:
NIT Jalandhar, NIT Durgapur and NIT Silchar are famous for their computer science and IT courses as that attracts the maximum campus recruitment. Whereas, IIEST Shibpur is famous for its mining course as it has excellent faculty and research-driven professors. IIITM is famous for a number of its courses and it completely depends on the student what they wish to pursue.
Scholarships:
Another important factor to consider is the amount of scholarship given by each institute. While most NIT’s do not give scholarships, NIT Jalandhar offers 4 scholarships to students depending on their merit and need. IIITM also does not provide scholarships. IIEST has some state-based scholarships.
Infrastructure:
NIT Jalandhar. NIT Durgapur and NIT Silchar have better infrastructure as they receive a number of grants and funds from the governments, being one of the premier engineering institutes of India. IIEST has more old-style infrastructure with most of its focus on research and development. IIITM Gwalior has excellent infrastructure along with good accommodation and campus facilities.

All these institutes are one of the higher ranking institutes and students passing out from here more or less get a job easily. It entirely depends on the students' rank and financial and social stability to get admission to one of these institutes.
One of my seniors was a resident of Bhopal and he was a student of IIEST Shibpur. These are the experiences he had in the institute.
Overall, my senior had an enjoyable experience in the institute and he faced no prejudice from the Bengali students.
