I'm getting a seat at NIT Jalandhar in production engineering. What is the scope of the branch in India? Which master's should I choose: an MBA or an MTech?

HC

Btech from Dr. B. R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar ( NITJ ) (Graduated 2019)

Scope of Industrial and Production Engineering is good at NIT Jalandhar. But you will be offered less salary in comparison to Mechanical Engineering.

But if you go for a non-core job, the salaries offered might be above average.

Between M.Tech and MBA, I will recommend you go for MBA. This is because M.Tech placements are very low and very little scope is there.

Choosing MBA will get you the following benefits:

  • Better salary than M.Tech.

  • The curriculum for IPE is easier so you can also prepare for CAT alongside

  • The faculty is extremely supportive

  • The syllabus of IPE and MBA is somewhat similar so it becomes easy for you

People choose M.Tech thinking its a bit similar to IPE. But in reality IPE has a practical and managerial subjects whereas M.Tech has more technical subjects. So don’t get confused and just go for IPE.

Which college should I join, IMT Ghaziabad (marketing) or IIM Sirmaur? I have work experience of 3 years in the IT industry.

SS
Sweta Singh Posted On : January 19th, 2023
PGDM from Indian Institute of Management Sirmaur (Graduated 2019)

The new IIMs like IIM Sirmaur and Jammu prefer experienced work professionals over freshers. This is so that the B School can boast its profile in front of corporates during placements. Other than the IIM tag it has nothing to offer and is not in the league of well-established companies. IMT Ghaziabad specializes in Marketing and IIM Sirmaur is nowhere comparable in this aspect. I’m fact IMT Ghaziabad is better than IIM Sirmaur in all these aspects

  • brand
  • crowd
  • faculty exposure
  • corporate connect
  • roles offered
  • alums
  • location

Your IT background will also fetch you a good role if you join IMT Ghaziabad only.

Should I go for an MBA from IIM Visakhapatnam or try next year?

AB
Anuj Bhawsar Posted On : January 24th, 2023
MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (Graduated 2020)

IIM Visakhapatnam is one of the newest IIMs and lacks credibility to a great extent. The State and Central governments might be trying to make this a good institution but I don’t think it’s capable of offering a plethora of opportunities in terms of placements, exposure, peer learning, or faculty. I will suggest you go for a different IIM if you have any other option up to your sleeve. Even a new IIM that has just been established for a year or two is better. Make sure its infrastructure, placements, and faculty are at par with the IIM standards. It’s too early to claim with surety of IIM Visakhapatnam’s worth. Moreover, if you were able to crack CAT this year, it’s better you try again next year with a bit more determination and target a better B School.

What should I join, SIBM Pune or IIM Visakhapatnam?

PS
Prabhat Sharma Posted On : January 24th, 2023
B.Tech in Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Patna (IITP) (Expected 2025)

Don’t go for IIM Visakhapatnam if you are just attracted by the IIM tag. While it surely is part of the IIM family that does not necessarily mean it has the same standards. Between the two, SIBM Pune gives a slight edge to IIM Visakhapatnam. If you talk about them generally they definitely are good institutions, but they are not the best. IIM Visakhapatnam is not yet recognised at SIBM Pune.

But if your preference is staying in your hometown or other location factors and IIM Visakhapatnam is suitable for you, then go for it. Both are almost similar in terms of worth and academics. At the end of the day it’s not the institution but your own performance that matters.

B.Sc from Awadhesh Pratap Singh University, (2018)

The Central Teacher’s Eligibility Test (CTET) is conducted twice a year and has a certain set of eligibility criteria which students must cater to before applying in order to be eligible to appear for the exam.

Apart from having a minimum score of 45% in class 10+2, students need to complete a mandatory teacher’s training program approved by the NCTE.

For primary or elementary grade teachers, those who are in the final year of their B.ed program will be eligible to apply for the CTET Paper 1.

General Eligibility

Minimum 45% in graduation or 10+2 with minimum 50% aggregate marks

Admit card

Third week of January

Exam Date

31st January, 2021

The only criteria to be followed up with is, that those who complete their B.ed from an NCTE approved institution will be required to additionally appear for a six month Bridge course in elementary education that has been recognized by NCTE, within two years of being appointed as a primary school teacher at an academic institution. Therefore, it is possible to apply for CTET Paper 1 if you are a B.ed final student.

If I join the MSc (Finance) Programme of JBIMS, then does it makes sense to pursue an MBA later?

AP
Ashish Pai Posted On : February 21st, 2023
MMS Operations Management, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (2018)

Chances are that you have completed the MSc Finance program of JBIMS and yet are not very satisfied with the results and sure about your career prospects. I suggest you 2 ways to get out of this situation

  • Start MBA right after M.Sc Finance: Doing this will stop you from going into a slump due to indecisiveness. I have seen quite a few students pursue MBA after MSc but mostly from the top B Schools like IIM Ahmedabad. But you should decide based on your own interests. For instance, if you are satisfied with the job you have got, then you don’t have to necessarily do an MBA. But if you think your career requires you to get an MBA degree go for it.
  • PGPX MBA after 4-5 years: This is even suitable for someone who has done a full-time MBA and has not received satisfactory results or you have done MBA from a mediocre B School or you have done Master’s in another field like M.Sc Finance. You may realize after 4-5 years what you exactly want in your career and an International MBA might help achieve it. This will improve your profile and career prospects.

The other option is not to do an MBA and stay where you are. You might not be ready to spend 2 years again studying considering the opportunity cost of not working for two years. In case you see no major diff between the two programs, you can just give up pursuing MBA altogether.

How should I write my answer on " Why marketing"? I got a call from SPJIMR marketing? My first priority was finance but a call from marketing?

SN
Sanju Nair Posted On : March 6th, 2023
MBA Finance, S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (1996)

The fact that you got a call from Marketing means SPJIMR seems your profile to be more suitable for Marketing than Finance. They have their own parameters of evaluation and you need to trust that part.

Firstly you need to analyze why exactly you have Finance as your first priority. Are you seriously interested in it or just choosing it because you have no prior experience? If you have no Finance background then certificates like CA/CFA might help.

But if you are just casually considering Finance, then I Advise you to look into Marketing because it is what SPJIMR specializes in. You will be losing a big opportunity if you forgo this offer. You will get a good chance to interact with a good peer group and develop an alumni network.

Depending on your preference the answer to ‘why Marketing’ is pretty subjective. Once you are into marketing you will find multiple reasons why you chose marketing. You can conduct research and write a well-informed reason or just simply refer to ready-made answers on CAT forums like Pagulguy for help.

Should I opt for AIIMS Raipur or any of my state colleges? I am from Rajasthan and I got AIIMS Raipur in 1st counseling.

KN
Kamal Nayan Posted On : November 19th, 2022
MBBS from Nil Ratan Sircar (NRS) Medical College and Hospital (Graduated 2022)

In the second round of AIIMS counseling, you should apply to Aiims Jodhpur. Because you are from Rajasthan, this is the best option.

IIT Jodhpur's CDC (Career Development Cell) expedites student training and employment by preparing students to be career-oriented professionals. The Career Development Cell organizes the IIT Jodhpur placement drive. The CDC prepares students for communication and personality development by administering mock tests and holding practice sessions. These sessions help candidates improve their aptitude, logical reasoning, and quantitative abilities. Companies that participate in IIT Jodhpur placements include Barclays, Amazon, Hyundai, Honda, and others.

Should I join IIM Shillong? How good is it compared to other older IIMs, especially for finance?

KN
Kedar Nath Posted On : January 16th, 2023
PGDM from Indian Institute of Management Shillong (2019)

You are asking whether you should take it or not so I will assume that you are planning to take a drop year otherwise. However, preparing and attempting CAT again is not a cakewalk. It requires a lot of determination and motivation and still does not guarantee that you will get a call from an old IIM.

IIM Shillong is rather a good choice for finance. You can contact some of its alumni to get more information on the same. Since your profile is good, Indore is also a good option for you.

But if you are adamant about joining the old IIMs, then focus on one single goal. Getting maximum percentile in CAT. Start preparing as soon as you decide to drop the year. Anything above 99.7 will guarantee you a call from one of the older IIMs. I have seen many people attempt CAT 3-4 times just to get into their choice of IIMs.

It all comes down to your determination. Like I said, dropping a year requires a lot of determination, so choose this path wisely. Else consider the various other options you have.
