How do I decide between IIT Delhi and IIT Madras for engineering physics?

AR
Aditi Roy Posted On : March 31st, 2023
lives in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India

The curriculum of Engineering Physics at both IIT Madras and IIT Delhi is equally instructional and well-structured. The demand for this discipline has witnessed a steady increase over the past few years.

If I had to choose between IIT Delhi and IIT Madras, I would have opted for the latter. This is because

  • IIT Delhi lacks in terms of technological instruments and its infrastructure is not on par with IIT Madras yet.
  • The hostel facilities are very substandard and the quality of food served in mess is pathetic in IIT Delhi
  • The sports facilities are highly lacking and the infrastructure is also average
  • There are illogical restrictions on the use of the Internet.

In my opinion, unless it’s a matter of locational preference, go for IIT Madras over IIT Delhi any day. You won’t be able to enjoy your college life to the fullest here.

After a B.Tech from an IIT, should one go for an MBA from IIT Bombay / Delhi or from newer IIMs like Kozhikode or Ranchi?

AR

The answer to your question is objectively based solely on your inclinations. IITs might offer a better ROI than IIMs. But had I been in your place I would have gone for the newer IIMs like Kozhikode or IIM Ranchi which is one of the fastest-growing IIMs. The reasons for taking this decision would have been

  • Better opportunities in finance, marketing, and consulting domains.
  • Better placement opportunities
  • Better industry exposure
  • The prestige of being a part of the IIM alumni network
  • The IIM tag

All these points make IIM a more tempting choice. Yet if you are tight on budget and just want to go for the Operations domain IIT will do fine for you.

How is IITD MBA compared to IIM Trichy/ Ranchi? And how are the placements at IIT Delhi in Operations?

PT
Prasenjit Thakur Posted On : January 12th, 2023
FPM Accounting and Finance & Corporate Governance, Indian Institute of Management Ranchi (2019)

My friend recently joined DMS, IIT Delhi to pursue MBA despite getting calls from almost all the new IIMs. She based her decision on the following factors

ROI: I think this is an underestimated factor people don’t stress enough. When you are comparing colleges on the same wavelength, it’s the ROI that can make the difference prominent. Apparently DMS, IIT Delhi enjoys an ROI of 180%.

Placements: DMS has great placement opportunities. The stats below prove it

Particulars

Statistics

Placement Percentage

100%

Highest CTC

INR. 36.70 LPA

Average CTC

INR 21.90 LPA

Median CTC

INR 20.60 LPA

Top Industry

Sales & Marketing, Strategy & Consulting

Top Companies

Rockwell Automation, Texas Instruments, ICICI, Optum, Medtronic, GE Healthcare

The placements for the Operations and Supply Chain accounted for 17.3%. The highest number of students had work experience in the Information Technology industry followed by the Supply Chain & Operations industry.

Ranking: DMS, IIT Delhi is ranked 5 in the NIRF ranking and also ranks higher than all new IIMs in

most of the CAT coaching institute rankings. It has a rich research culture giving it the 3 positions in the QS world rankings.

Batch size: DMS has an average batch size thereby increasing the scope of interaction. It also enjoys location advantages, not making it difficult for big industries to visit the campus for recruitment.

How is the 8.0 CGPA at IIT Delhi?

SP
Sona Panday Posted On : April 14th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (2018)

At IIT Delhi, a 7 CGPA is considered average so definitely 8 CGPA will be considered above average. The value of CGPAs at IIT Delhi is as follows

  • 7.0: AVG
  • 8.0: ABOVE AVG
  • 9.0: VERY GOOD
  • 9.5+: EXCELLENT

Key highlight pertaining to CGPA

  • The usual cutoff set by companies that visit the campus for placements is 8.5. Very few companies have a cutoff of 8 or 9 so to stay on the safer side, 8.5 is an ideal CGPA.
  • No matter how lucrative your CGPA may seem if you don’t fill the certain criteria, it will be very difficult to get placed
  • Forex is a rare example that requires an 8 CGPA
  • For those opting for branch change, need to maintain 8+ CGPA
  • To hold a Position of Responsibility the minimum CGPA required is 7 CGPA.

I would like to comment that an 8 CGPA is quite decent and will open opportunities to a certain extent but to ensure maximum opportunities, an 8.5+ CGPA is recommended.

Is it wise to go for an MBA in IIT Delhi, leaving PGDIM from NITIE? I am interested in marketing management.

PP
Pratik Parikh Posted On : April 14th, 2023

No, it is not wise to go for an MBA in IIT Delhi, leaving PGDIM from NITIE. While both institutes offer management programs, here are some reasons why you should consider NITIE instead of IIT Delhi:

  • Degree in General Management: NITIE offers a degree in general management, which means that you'll get a well-rounded education and exposure to different areas of management. While the institute has a major focus on supply chain management and operations, they also offer electives in finance and marketing.
  • Premier B School: NITIE ranks as one of the premier B schools in India and has a reputation for producing successful managers and leaders across different sectors. This can give you an advantage in the long run when it comes to career growth and opportunities.
  • Alumni Base: NITIE has a huge alumni base across different industries and sectors, including consulting, marketing, and supply chain management/operations. This can provide you with valuable connections and networking opportunities, which can help you advance your career.
  • Location: NITIE is located in Mumbai, which is the financial capital of India. This means that you'll have access to a wide range of job opportunities and industries, especially in the marketing field.

On the other hand, IIT Delhi School of Management primarily focuses on engineering, and its alumni base in the corporate sector may not be as strong as NITIE's. In conclusion, while IIT Delhi may be a good option for certain management programs, NITIE's reputation, alumni base, and location make it a better choice for marketing management.

IMT Ghaziabad is the best option for Marketing. It has an excellent student crowd. There are good opportunities for peer-to-peer learning. The competitive environment on campus motivates students to perform better. IMT has a brilliant Marketing faculty. The alumni of the institute are working in top positions in the marketing domain.

IMT Ghaziabad placements are good. Marketing students are recruited in core/sales/media/digital/advertisement roles. For Marketing, the salary packages offered are in the range of INR 8 LPA - 11.92 LPA.

SG
Sushmita Gupta Posted On : May 23rd, 2022
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

For Civil Engineering, IIT Roorkee will be a better option compared to IIT Delhi. It used to be a Civil Engineering college, before becoming an IIT. It is also one of the oldest Civil Engineering colleges on the continent. Naturally, IIT Roorkee has a better brand name in the Civil Engineering industry. Students of the branch get a lot of opportunities to visit and practice in nearby industry projects.

The highlights of IIT Roorkee Civil Engineering placements show the placement rate is 90%. The highest CTC goes up to INR 35 LPA.
