Is it advisable to forgo admission offer from IIM Calcutta and prepare for UPSC? How risky is it? And is the reward worth the risk?

PGP-PGDM from Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (Graduated 2019)

Forgoing an admission offer from Calcutta and preparing for UPSC is a risky choice. Whether this is a good decision depends on your goals and how soon you are willing to achieve them. If you are falling short of time, then you can devote the entire 2 years to UPSC preparation.

But if you prefer quality over quantity then my suggestion would be to pursue MBA along with it. Surely the first year will be challenging. You might face serious issues managing both the tasks at hand. But trust me the results will be amazing. Pursuing an MBA will change your perspectives regarding the issues around the world. You won’t just study for UPSC you will learn from it. Moreover, you can select management as your elective in UPSC. Management and administrative services are correlated.

If you have less time in hand forgo the admission offer and prepare for UPSC. But if you want to crack a qualitative UPSC pursue MBA along with it.

Choice between Great Lakes PGPBA and IIM Calcutta EPBA. Which one to choose?

AN

MBA in Marketing, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (Graduated 2020)

The BA course has been recently initiated at both institutes. Without second thoughts, Great Lakes has top-notch faculty who handle the courses meticulously. But the competitor IIM Calcutta makes the discussion more difficult.

The only difference between the two courses is that IIM Calcutta has probably started the BA course because of its flagship PGPM program under the IIMC brand. Whereas Great Lakes BA is another flagship program. So the focus might be better.

Choose IIM Calcutta if you are willing to attach yourself to its brand name for the rest of your life.

Fellow programs in Public Policy are available at IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta.

IIM B is the most popular of India's three IIMs for Public Policy. The PPM Program is a multidisciplinary group of active researchers and teachers from a variety of social science backgrounds. High-quality academic research, teaching, and consulting for policy analysis and program evaluation are used to address challenges in policy innovation, governance for the delivery of public services, the relationship between government and industry, social policy, and legal and regulatory issues.

The key to gaining knowledge is social learning, which can best develop through grounded interactions with others at conferences and seminars. Seminars and events, in addition to assisting participants in gaining deeper insights into the subject under discussion, also aid in the resolution of professional problems.

How many students repeat fail in IIM Calcutta every year?

SN
Samantha Nirmalya Posted On : December 1st, 2022
studied at Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (2018)

It can range from 5 to 15 in a batch of 460, depending on one's grades. In the first year, grades are averaged across 18-20 subjects. As a result, there are numerous opportunities to balance one's performance and maintain the minimum required CGPA. In comparison to other IIMs, an average guy can easily handle academic pressure at C. Despite the fact that you can see that over 95% of the batch has left. However, for some, it is too much to bear. Because it is a CGPA system, your grades are relative. Consequently, you must take care to avoid becoming one of the bottom 2-3%.

There is a system in place for extra classes taught by seniors for difficult subjects, but it all comes down to your level of preparation and how much effort you are willing to put in.

RK

Works with Asia's largest education & training company

PGCGM is an excellent course if you want an IIM certification but don't want to leave your job. The learning is the same, and the faculty is the same; the only difference is that this is taught in a virtual online classroom rather than you sitting in a classroom in Calcutta. It also includes three campus visits, so you can get a feel for the campus.

Most people struggle to get into an IIM, and the PGCGM course costs 3.5 lakh versus 31 lakh for ISB's PGP Pro course.

I have 89.8 in 10th, 62.15 in 12th and I have one year back in engineering. Can I get admission in IIM Calcutta if I score a good percentile in CAT?

PS
Priti Sen Posted On : December 1st, 2022
IIM Ahmedabad alumnus, MD, Bfactory

IIM Calcutta distributes its components and assigns weights to them in order to generate category-wise shortlists for the PI and WAT stages.

COMPONENTS

WEIGHTS

CAT Overall Score

28

Class Xth Marks

10

Class XIIth Marks

10

Gender Diversity Factor

2

Total

50

(A/B)*28 is the formula for calculating cat percentile weight.

  • A = Total CAT score of the candidate

  • B = CAT Maximum Score

You will receive a 10/10 in class ten, a 2/10 in class twelve, and a 0 in gender diversity. To get an interview call from IIM Calcutta, you must score 99.9 percentile or higher.

Given that you received a very high CAT score, you must perform flawlessly in the interview and WAT in order to get the call. You can receive mentoring from IIM Ahmedabad alumni if you live in Delhi and are preparing for the CAT.

I’m a fresher. I have converted FMS Delhi. Got waitlisted at C with a bleak chance. Should I retry CAT for IIM Ahmedabad Calcutta or stick to FMS?

RT
Rashmi Thakur Posted On : December 1st, 2022
Sydenham Institute of Management Studies, Research and Entrepreneurship Education (SIMSREE) (Graduated 2016)

The overall rankings of FMS Delhi and IIM A/C are comparable (IIM A & C rank better than FMS in terms of placements and college life though).

FMS has its own set of advantages, such as the best ROI in India and placements in the core Finance domain, among many others. You must have performed exceptionally well on CAT 201 to receive a call from FMS. Asking yourself the following questions will help you retake the CAT.

  • What do you hope to gain from your post-graduation experience?

Start a career at a high salary, get a brand name, or develop your own personality by staying and studying with the industry's best minds.

  • Which field do you want to begin your career in?

 Consulting/core finance/marketing, for example.

  • Are you willing to invest a year of your life to prepare for the CAT again, and are you confident of scoring 99+ percentile in 2019?

  • The maximum amount of money you can afford to pay in fees.
