Which is better: NIT Surathkal for IT or IIT Bhubaneswar for Mechanical?

SS
Sanjay Sharma Posted On : August 14th, 2020
B.Tech. in Computer Science & Computer Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Warangal (Graduated 2020)

It’s difficult to determine which institute is better as the courses in question are different. However, given below are information about the two courses which may help you make the decision.

  • Though NIT Surathkal is among the oldest of the NIT’s, their IT department is comparatively new. IIT Bhubaneswar’s Mechanical Engineering department is popular and one of the core subjects.
  • It is always better to study Mechanical engineering in IIT Bhubaneswar than IT from NIT Surathkal because core engineering will be preferred by recruiting companies than IT.
  • NIT Surathkal has better placements than IIT Bhubaneswar due to its older and more noticeable connections with the recruiting companies.
  • An IIT Bhubaneswar graduate will be offered less salary than an NIT graduate due to its reputation and popularity among recruiters. A graduate from NIT receives an average salary package of around 9 lakhs per annum.
  • NIT Surathkal is ranked 5th in their Engineering category and IIT Bhubaneswar ranked 9th in their engineering category by Times Engineering Ranking 2019.
  • The Cut off for IT in NIT is 2509-3321 and for Mechanical Engineering in IIT Bhubaneswar is 4003-12065.
  • IIT (Bhubaneswar) as a brand that is much more popular than NIT (Surathkal) and is valued by both students and recruiters alike.

The final decision is up to the choice of a student and his/her preferred course of study.

Which is better, an MTech in transportation at IIT Bhubaneswar or construction technology and management at NIT Surathkal?

DC
Deepak Chatterjee Posted On : August 14th, 2020
M.Tech Transportation Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Warangal (2018)

MTech in Transportation might not be a popular subject but it can land you in some jobs of Civil Engineering and Automobile Engineering. An MTech degree will help you to gain further knowledge about the subject if you, later on, want to pursue a career in Teaching or Research. In the 2019 placement drive, more than 89 companies have visited IIT Bhubaneswar for placements. The average salary package offered to an MTech graduate was 11 lakhs per annum.

Construction Technology and Management is a closely related field to Civil Engineering. After completing MTech you can further get into research and development about the subject. Also, students from NIT Surathkal have received an average salary package of 7 lakhs per annum by recruiting companies like Alliance International, G. Gheewala, ABC consultants, Shella Consultants, Delta recruitment, R.K. International, MM Enterprises, International Manpower resources, Randstad India, Dynamic Group, Hector & Streak Consulting Pvt. Ltd., etc. for Real Estate, Infrastructure, Projects, and oil and gas sectors.

Both subjects are closely related to the Civil Engineering department, you can choose by your college preference, subject preference, ranks, etc. IIT Bhubaneswar would be a better choice due to its better placements and popularity among the professionals.

Which is better, NITK for a CS or IIT Bhubaneswar for electronics and communication?

HR
Himani Roy Posted On : August 14th, 2020
Civil Engineering from IIT Bhubaneswar

NITK ranks 21st in the Engineering Category by NIRF 2019. It is the top Institute among the NITs. During 2018-19, a total of 92% of students got placed from undergraduate programs. The Computer Science branch of NITK Surathkal received an annual package of 18 lakhs per annum.

IIT Bhubaneswar ranks 17th in the Engineering Category by NIRF 2019. It is one of the new establishments of IIT. The cut off for Electronics and Communications in IIT Bhubaneswar is 1000-3000. A total of 86% placement was recorded in the year 2019 from the Electronics and Communications department. Though IIT Bhubaneswar has a better ranking, students often prefer choosing NITK other than the newer IITs. Due to its reliability and popularity among students. NITK is a much older institute than IIT Bhubaneswar resulting in having better connections with companies, faculty members, infrastructure, alumni, etc.

Though CS students received more salary packages than Electronics and Communications it is up to you to choose which career will be perfect for you. You can choose to study in IIT Bhubaneswar by receiving the IIT tag or you can go for NITK which has been here for a long time.

How do you compare ECE in NITK and IIT Bhubaneswar?

VS
Vineet Sharma Posted On : August 14th, 2020
B.Tech Information Technology, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal

The IIT Bhubaneswar is among the newly opened IITs in India. The institute was established in the year 2008 and the ECE branch was started in the year 2016. The first batch of ECE graduated in 2020. Whereas NITK is among the oldest NITs of India. The institute was established in the year 1960 and ECE started in the year 1979. So, naturally, NITK has a stronger base in terms of research & academics, clubs, society, and other activities.

In IIT Bhubaneswar, companies like Samsung, Goldman Sachs, Jio, Honeywell, Tesco, Adobe, and TCS participated in placements of 2020. 38 students got placed out of 39 students who registered from the ECE branch with an average of 15.8 LPA in the year 2019-20.

In placement statistics of ECE at NITK is quite good too. In the batch of 2018 – 19, a total of 97% of students were placed with an average package of 14.15 lakhs per annum. The highest package offered in NITK was around 39 Lakhs per annum.

ECE department of IIT Bhubaneswar focuses on theory and research work equally. Both institutes have well-equipped laboratories such as Digital Signal Processing & Embedded Systems Lab, VLSI Lab, Signals & Systems Lab, Wireless Sensor Networks Lab, Radiating Systems Lab, and Communications Systems Lab. Since NITK is older than IIT Bhubaneswar, the faculty of NITK has more experience than IIT Bhubaneswar.

Which is better for an M.Tech in civil engineering, NIT Surathkal or IIT Bhubaneswar?

HT
Harsha Tyagi Posted On : August 13th, 2020
Studied at National Institute of Technology KarnatakaSurathkal

Both the colleges are equally good but you should go for NIT Surathkal because it is a well-established institute and has a greater alumni background. It is one of the top NITs which are better than a new IIT. IIT Bhubaneswar is a new IIT therefore it lacks proper infrastructure, alumni, and faculty.

On the other hand, NIT Surathkal is old and has proper faculty and alumni which is a plus point. The average package at NIT Surathkal was 11.90 LPA for M.Tech and 11.44 LPA at IIT Bhubaneswar. In 2019,  there was a 69% placement for M.Tech students in IIT Bhubaneswar. M.Tech is considered a dead course in India because it lacks job options. But it is up to you, what you do with your post-grad degree. Both colleges will provide you a great number of opportunities.

College life of both the colleges is great but there is one thing that NIT Surathkal has that no other college in India has and that is it has an own beach. Environment wise both colleges are good. NIT Surathkal hosts the second biggest fest in south India called Incident.

Although the IIT tag offers certain advantages, you should choose NIT Surathkal because of its experienced faculty and better opportunities it can provide.
