If you are looking for a private job, then you should consider Civil Engineering at NIT Surathkal. Here are some reasons why:

  • NIT Surathkal has a great reputation for producing graduates who get placed in top software multinationals or investment banks at lucrative packages.
  • The insider knowledge of the college along with the feedback from many students at NIT Surathkal, assures that the college has a lot to offer in terms of quality education and training.

However, if you want to go for a government job, then you should go with Civil Engineering at MNNIT Allahabad. Here are some reasons why:

MNNIT Allahabad is ranked 93rd overall by MHRD’s 2020 NIRF rankings. It offers specializations in M.Tech Civil Engineering in Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Transportation Engineering.

NIT Surathkal is ranked 33rd overall and offers postgraduate specializations in Civil Engineering in fields of Construction Technology and Management, Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, and Transportation Engineering.

The region of origin, as stated in the question, does not become an obstacle in any way to take admission in either of these institutes as more than 50% of the students belong to the outside states. Also, the infrastructure of NIT Surathkal is better in terms of hostel maintenance and mainly NIT Surathkal has its own beach. As a North Indian, it would give good exposure to diverse ethnicity if one wishes to opt for NIT Surathkal.

Admission Process and Cut-off:

  • Both NITs accept a valid JEE Main score for B.Tech and GATE score for admission in M.Tech.
  • Admission for B.Tech is offered via JoSAA and that for M.Tech via CCMT.

The cut off for JEE Main 2019 (round 7) is as follows:

Institutes Opening Rank Closing Rank
MNNIT Allahabad 13553 18118
NIT Surathkal 15155 28144

Course Fees:

The following fee structure is the same for all branches of the respective institutes.

    • MNNIT Allahabad: The fee structure for B.Techis INR 84,666 whereas, for M.Tech, the institute charges INR 1.13 Lakhs
  • NIT Surathkal: For B.Tech, the fee is INR 1.51 Lakhs, on the other hand, INR 99,926 is for M.Tech

Placement:

Although placement for the Civil Engineering branch is usually bleak, NIT Surathkal leads ahead of MNNIT Allahabad in terms of placement percentage.

  • MNNIT Allahabad:
    • Some of the core recruiting companies are HCC, L&T, Unitech, NTPC, HPCL, IOCL, Vizag Steel, CCCL, DS Construction, etc.
    • The institute recorded a placement percentage of 70.15%.
    • The average CTC offered to the students was 6.54 lakhs and the highest CTC was 17.3 lakhs.
  • NIT Surathkal:
    • Some of the core recruiting companies for civil engineering are L&T, BPCL, IOCL, Jaypee group, Hindustan construction, DLF, NALCO, etc.
    • A total of 90% of students from CE got placed with an average salary of 5 LPA. The highest package was 10 LPA.

The choice of the institute for pursuing civil engineering depends entirely on the student, keeping in mind the above facts. The place of origin, whether North India or South India, is irrelevant as both institutes offer hostel and mess facilities which are at par with some of the best engineering institutes in India.
