How do I prepare for GATE 2021?

SD
Surbhi Dey Posted On : January 8th, 2021
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, 2019, Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi

GATE is one of the most important stepping stones in every student’s life. To qualify and get a rank below 100, one must follow a rigorous preparation schedule. It is common knowledge that one must start preparing for GATE at least 6 months prior to the day of examination. It is better to follow one subject at a time and prepare the subject thoroughly.

Preparation Strategy:

One of my friends secured a rank under AIR 30 in GATE CS 2020.

Here are some of the strategies he used during preparation that worked for him

Source of Strategies:

  • GateOverFlow: Includes strategies, pdfs, test series, gate questions with answers, doubt clearing section.
  • GateCSE: Includes everything related to preparation, syllabus, books, admission, cutoffs, college reviews, etc.
  • Interview by Ravi Shankar Mishra: Includes a list of books and main chapters to focus on.
  • Gate Information Brochure

A few useful tips for preparation is as follows.

Revision:

  • Regularly revise concepts with tests.

  • Prepare notes for each subject.
  • Start with the complete revision from at least three months before the exam.

Question papers and Test Series:

  • Question papers should be left for solving after the preparation of a topic.

  • Solving test series questions within a stipulated time will help in increasing efficiency.
  • Does not matter how many marks you score, jolt down the answers, and correct the mistakes.
  • Give at least 20 tests so that the preparation is solid.

During his final year of BE, my friend started preparing for GATE. After finishing college he opted for coaching. You can do the same or study on your own if you have the self-discipline that GATE preparation requires.

Miscellaneous tips:

  • Prepare well for the aptitude section, it is scoring.
  • Make your basic concepts clear. Clear concepts about a topic minimize the chances of getting an answer wrong.
  • Do not make mistakes in calculation.
  • Do not skip a subject entirely. At least study the basics.

Preparation right before GATE:

  • A week before GATE, concentrate on staying healthy and getting enough sleep. Go through the mistakes you made during mock-tests and short-notes on topics that you have a tendency to forget.

  • On the day before the GATE examination, do not study anything and try to go to bed early.
  • On the day of the GATE examination, revise the short-notes if you have time in the morning. Reach the examination center in advance.

Hope this was helpful. Best of luck with your examination.

  • It is always better to solve past year papers and practice set question papers to increase your accuracy and speed and for this, you can refer to any recognized practice set as per your comfort. (For ex- Arihant Publications IIT-JAM Physics practice set.

Important Topics:

  • Matrix, Algebra of complex numbers in the mathematical physics section is very important.
  • While preparing mechanics and general property central force, Moment of inertia, Gravitational low are the main topics that you need to cover mandatorily.
  • Other main topics in oscillation, wave, and optics include Travelling and standing wave, Group velocity and wave velocity, Doppler effect, Diffraction of light, Polarisation.

What is the reputation of BITS, Pilani in India and abroad?

AG
Anchal Ghose Posted On : June 27th, 2023
Studied at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (2020)

People in India are very brand conscious. This is exactly why most engineering aspirants can be seen flocking to IITs. IIT is the dream college for them and their sheep mentality does not let them look beyond it. I have met many people from BITS who claim that choosing BITS over IIT was one of the wisest decisions of their life.

BITS Pilani is a well-reputed technical institute. BITS Pilani ranking by NIRF is 20 out of 200 colleges in India in 2023. Every BITS campus has top-notch infrastructure and placement scenarios making it one of the best institutes that enjoys global recognition as well.

Here are a few facts pertaining to BITS Pilani that might convince you of its worth

  • BITS and OITs make up the maximum number of students going abroad for exchange programs and summer internships.
  • BITS has no attendance policy so you can attend or skip classes on your own will.
  • BITS has no reservation policy and thus admissions are solely on the basis of merit resulting in a better quality crowd.
  • BITS infrastructure and facilities usually comprises international equipment.
  • Connect 2.0 ensures students from one campus attend guest lectures from the other campus.

So BITS Pilani enjoys a good reputation both nationally and internationally owing to its flexible curriculum and the excellent opportunities that it offers.

How was your interview experience at IIM Nagpur?

PP
Prateek Paliwal Posted On : January 16th, 2023
MBA in Master of Business Administration Degrees, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Delhi (Graduated 2018)

My friend recently flunked her interview as she did not prepare for the questions related to her undergraduate degree. They asked her to start with a basic introduction after which they asked her about the subjects of her undergraduate program. Because she had not prepared well for this part, her hesitation took the better of her. They probed her with questions like

Did you study Financial Subjects or about to study?

  • What is the Current ratio?
  • What is Net worth?
  • What is the Income of the Company?
  • What is Return on Sales?
  • Unearned income and where it comes from?
  • What should I ask you?
  • What's the idea if you want to do entrepreneurship?
  • What is a Dividend?

What worsened her situation was the questions asked by the second panel. She asked her some mathematical questions which became the reason for her doom.

The conclusion from the interview is that as a fresher you should definitely go through your graduation subjects as most of the questions will be asked from that only. Remember they will question your ability to answer the questions confidently most importantly.

How is the MA in psychology distance course at IGNOU? What are the job prospects of it compared to a regular distance course?

AP
Arijit Pathak Posted On : October 13th, 2022
Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)

Admission is available in two sessions: July and January. The university supplies the study material, which is fine. It follows a year system, with 7 courses (6 theory and 1 practical) in the first year and 6 in the second year (3 theory, 1 practical, 1 internship requiring at least 240 hours total, and 1 project/research (can only be done if you pass the Research Methodology and Statistics subjects in the first year)). There are three optional courses to choose from in the second year of IGNOU's MA in Psychology.

  • Clinical psychiatry
  • Psychology of counseling
  • Psychology in the workplace

Each has different job prospects, and it is believed you will be familiar with them because it is clear from their names what fields they represent. The procedure is extremely simple. Obtain admission, complete assignments, and register for the exam at the desired exam center. After passing the exams, which can take between three and six years. Following that, you will be given a mark sheet and a provisional certificate. To obtain an original degree, you must wait at least six to twelve months for the convocation to be held by IGNOU, and you must pay a nominal fee of Rs 600-900 for registration and certificate.

If you are unable to attend the convocation, your certificate will be mailed to your home address. However, the practicals and viva-voce are an exception because some of the exams were conducted recently (depending on the Regional/Study center). It is acceptable in the first year, but if it occurs in the second year, it may cause a hindrance for higher education because the certificates may not be available at the right time for seeking admission, (seems IGNOU is nowadays quickly distributing the provisional and statement of marks. The good news is that you will receive it directly to your home via post after completing the course). The learner must submit assignments for all theory papers, and writing them will take a lot of time, but it will be beneficial for a passionate learner of psychology.

If you want to pursue this MA in Psychology from IGNOU, you must fully commit to this course because the field of psychology is vast. So working while pursuing this course may not be the best option because it may require 3 months of internship, pure research work, and an ocean of writing work.

Regarding the job prospects, as a student of the specific course, you hope to win the UGC NET/JRF and continue your education to become a lecturer. If I get the JRF, I plan to pursue an M Phil in Clinical Psychology and become a licensed clinical practitioner in the mental health field.

What is the passing marks out of 50 in IGNOU?

CR
Chandani Rajput Posted On : October 20th, 2022
Master of Commerce in Commerce & Master of Arts in Economics, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)

IGNOU's evaluation system is also distinct from that of traditional universities. IGNOU has a multi-tiered evaluation system.

1. Exercises in self-assessment within each unit of study.

2. Continuous evaluation primarily through tutor-marked assignments, practical assignments, and seminar/workshop/extended contact programmes.

3. The end-of-term exams

4. Work on a project

The evaluation of learners is based on the various instructional activities that they engage in. To complete an academic programme, a learner must write assignment responses before taking term-end exams on a regular basis. A learner must submit TMA responses to the Coordinator of the Study Centre to which he or she is assigned.

A learner should keep duplicate copies of TMA assignment responses that may be required to be produced on demand at the Student Evaluation Division. In June and December, term-end examinations are held at various examination centres throughout the country and abroad.

Who is the best professor at IIM Ahmedabad?

AB
Arkaprava Banerjee Posted On : March 14th, 2022
MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (2020)

I have a few friends who graduated from IIM Ahmedabad. Most of them used to gush about the teaching methodology of Professor Saral Banerjee.  He is an expert in Operations Management. But his skills and knowledge aren’t limited to a single discipline. You will scarcely come across a better definition of strategy than the one proposed by him, “Strategy is all about closing doors.” His way of explaining the facts of management through the Elephant, Cheetah, and Tortoise story makes a lifelong impression.

Swami Shraddhanand College is located on North Campus. Because of its location and management, it cannot be compared to any other DU college.

However, when you consider the foundation of a college, namely education and extracurricular activities, in terms of education, SSNC's History Department ranks among the top ten in Delhi University for some specific courses, along with the courses like Microbiology, Life Science, Botany, and Geography, SSNC. Aside from that, there is the well-known Cricket team, which has been a champion for the past decade or so.

How is ISME in Bangalore?

AR
Aniket Roy Posted On : May 14th, 2021
ISME, Bangalore

A relative of mine attended ISME Bangalore. He was a part of the 2010 Marketing batch. The institute was recently established back then, only a couple of batches old. Here is a brief review of the institute based on his experience at the institute.

  • They had faculties from IIMs and reputed B-schools like SP Jain, etc. Overall the faculty base was pretty great and the members were quite cooperative. My relative completed almost 40 presentations during his time at the institute.
  • However, in terms of placements, the institute lags behind. The recruiting companies they bring on the campus placement drive are not that great. From my relatives batch, only a few students from the Finance specialization were able to get good placements.

Here are the recent placement statistics of the institute.

Average CTC

7 LPA

Top Recruiters

TCS, JP Morgan, Wipro

So, if you want good placement from the campus drives itself, then ISME Bangalore may not be the best option.
