What is the concept of dual degree in BITS? Is it better than single B.E(Hons) degree?

PS
Prateek Sharma Posted On : June 27th, 2023
studied at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani

BITS Pilani BE courses have a duration of 4 years while the dual degree courses have a duration of 5 years. A few dual courses offered at BITS Pilani include Msc. (Hons) Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics, and Physics.

  1. The courses taught in the first year are the same in both BE and dual degrees. Based on your CGPA of the first year and your preferences, all the dualities will be allotted their respective BE degrees.
  2. From the second year, BE students start studying their own separate courses while Msc students start studying their compulsory courses for their Msc degree.
  3.  In the third year dual degree students start studying BE degree with their juniors along with their Msc.
  4. In the fourth year, they only study the compulsory courses of BE.
  5. In the fifth year dual degree students will either complete their thesis or PS or both. Students are required to complete their electives by the end of graduation apart from their compulsory subjects

Basically, dual degree students pursue BE with their juniors.

Here are a few pros and cons of the institute to help you understand the credibility of this degree.

Pros

  • It's a good option if you failed to get a branch of your choice in BE. Work hard in the first year and get a good CGPA to opt for your desired branch.
  • An MSc is beneficial in fetching good placement offers. A very popular combination among recruiters is Msc Economics + CS.
  • You get to enjoy college life for an extra year and create more memories.

Cons

  • An extra year means you will have to invest more money and time.
  • The third and fourth years will be very hectic given that you will have to do compulsory courses alongside completing electives too.
  • It will be very difficult to sit for placements if you opt for double semester PS in your final year.

In all, I think the dual degree program is a great choice for those who did not get their desired branch in BE.

How are the interview questions for IIIT Hyderabad for the UGEE? How should I prepare for them? And what are the chances of clearing the interview? Here’s how my UGEE interview process went.

AC
Anupama Chauhan Posted On : July 28th, 2023
studied at International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad

My friend had the opportunity to appear for the Dual Degree Programs interview. She shared her entire experience with me. Once the document verification was done, the candidates were divided into seven groups. 20 minutes before the interview, she was given a sheet with 3 questions one each from Physics, Linguistics, and Mathematics.

  1. (a) Since Newton’s First Law of Motion can be derived from the second law of Motion, what do you think is the relevance of the first law? Did Newton give us three laws when two would have been adequate?

          (b) A similar Mechanics question which I don’t remember.

  1. A Linguistics Question of Medium Difficulty
  2. You are given an equilateral triangle of side length ‘a. Disprove or Prove: Among any five points inside the triangle, there always exists a pair at a distance not greater than a/2.

The candidates were not asked to write the answers but just ponder on the questions for 20 minutes. Soon she was ushered into the interview room where she was welcomed by several warm panelists that asked questions like

  • Why IIIT and Why Research?
  • Tell us about your family and school education.
  • Do you like linguistics?, to which she said that she loved Tamil. He asked further, Do you find the present web applications in Tamil efficient?
  • Which field in Computer Science do you like the most?
  • Do you have any experience working with Cryptography?
  • Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Out of the 3 questions handed in earlier, she was able to solve the  Lingo question and even managed to write some satisfactory reasons for the Physics questions but failed to solve the Mathematics question. They further asked questions related to Friction, Work, and Energy. They did not ask the linguistic one and moved on to the mathematical question. They asked her to solve it with their help.

She told them about her extracurricular achievements and they seemed to be impressed. One of the professors ended the interview by saying that if she got selected, she should come with her extracurricular file then. The entire interview lasted for 50 minutes and she considers it to be one of the most memorable interviews.

Who are some of the unappreciated people in IIIT- Allahabad?

TD
Tanya Dey Posted On : March 11th, 2021
Master of Science in Applied Computing, University of Toronto (2018)

There are no specific people who are left unacknowledged at IIIT Allahabad. Students like you and others, who have ever studied in IIITA, have never been appreciated for the prestigious job that they did to add up the reputation of the institute.

All students are the assets of any institute, but IIITA does not recognize all students through the same bar. Even the guards and administrative clerks get more value than the bright students in the form of alumni, who bring glory to the institute.

Management of College:

  • The management of the college does not give worth to the alumni. Every alumnus desires to aid their Alma Mater. Many good coders and computer scientists have brought fame to this institute, because of which some of the good companies visit the campus and place the potential students.
  • Most of the institutes have “Alumni Meets” to keep in touch with the alumni. The institutes give out awards to those who have achieved heights in society. Even the administration of IIITA never maintains the record of these alumni.

In IIITA, sportspersons are also not appreciated. The college is rigid in granting permissions to the sports team to go and participate in the tournaments. It is money-minded. Here, no one will pat the back of students even if they perform the best, be it sports or academics. Therefore, all students who in some or the other way contributed to the college are those unappreciated bunch.

If I don't pass all the papers in my IGNOU exam in 1st year, can I still go to the second year? How do I clear the papers which I didn't pass?

SG
Srabani Guha Posted On : March 31st, 2023
studied at Indira Gandhi National Open University

If you are studying at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and you failed to pass all the papers in your first year, don't worry, you can still progress to the second year of your course. Here's what you need to know:

  • You can register for the second year of your course even if you have back papers from your first year. IGNOU allows you to register for the next academic year as long as you have cleared the minimum number of credits required to advance to the next year.
  • You can also attempt to complete your first year while simultaneously studying in the second year. For example, if your second-year Term End Examination (TEE) is scheduled for the December cycle, you can attempt your first-year back papers in the June cycle or vice versa.
  • If you have already submitted assignments for the back papers in your first year, you do not need to resubmit them. However, you will need to ensure that you meet the assignment submission requirements for the second year.
  • It's important to note that you will need to complete all your back papers within the stipulated time period subject to the course. IGNOU has a maximum time limit within which you need to complete your course requirements. You should refer to the university guidelines or contact the academic counselor for more information.

The video below will further help you understand this

What if I missed the last date for applying an Original Degree (OD) at JNTUH?

SP
Sreeja Prasad Posted On : March 28th, 2023
B.Tech,Computer Science from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University,Hyderabad (2017)

If you have missed the last date for applying for an Original Degree (OD) at JNTUH, you may still be able to apply for it by paying a late fee. However, the availability of this option and the amount of the late fee may vary depending on the rules and regulations of JNTUH.

It is advisable to contact the JNTUH Examination Branch or the concerned department at the earliest and explain your situation. They may be able to provide you with more information and guidance on what steps you can take next.

In some cases, it may not be possible to apply for an OD after the deadline has passed. In such a situation, you may need to wait for the next cycle of OD applications or explore other options such as applying for a duplicate certificate or transcript.

Is BITS Pilani really as it claims to be?

DR
Deepshikha Roy Posted On : June 27th, 2023
studied at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani

Yes, BITS Pilani is worth all the hype it gets. You will find life here to be very dynamic and competitive as the student pool is equally talented because of the no-reservation policy. You will have to work harder than usual to maintain good grades here.

  1. Campus life: There is a strong bond between juniors and seniors who guide you constantly.
  2. Clubs: Campus life is very happening and many Interdepartmental Club events are held. BITS Pilani also organizes the second largest Cultural fest of India, Oasis.
  3. Academics: The academics here are very rigorous and you must work hard to remain among the toppers constantly. The competitive environment rather challenges your inner capabilities.
  4. Faculty: The majority of the professors are experts in their field and adopt modern pedagogy to deliver concepts excellently. Moreover, you are at your own will to attend lectures or skip them and even devise your own timetable.
  5. Placements: BITS Pilani placements are at the same level as the top 5 IITs and better than top NITs so placements should be your last concern here. BITS Pilani placements 2023 recorded the average package as high as INR 30.37 LPA while the highest package stood at INR 60.75 LPA.

Overall, BITS Pilani is one of the best technical institutes in India and is really worth all the fame it gets.

Which college should I choose between IIT, Hyderabad & IIIT, Hyderabad for a CSE course?

Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : July 13th, 2023

Had I been in your place, I would have chosen IIIT Hyderabad over IIT Hyderabad. While both colleges offer a good CS program, IIIT Hyderabad is the clear winner when it comes to CS. Consider the following points of comparison

  • IIT Hyderabad is a new IIt, so choosing it just because of the IIt tag would be a blunder.
  • IIT Hyderabad is still in its development phase and its campus still needs a few more facilities to become full-fledged operating.
  • IIIT Hyderabad has a better religion and brand name among the IT giants and therefore its placement scenario is way better than IIT Hyderabad.
  • IIIT Hyderabad is well-known for its achievements in competitions like ACM ICPC and GSOC.

I have my cousins in both the institutes and from their discussions I have concluded that IIIT Hyderabad leads in CS opportunities.
