Dr. Jemimah Winston is the Principal of Bishop Appasamy College of Arts and Science. She joined BACAS in 1996. She has completed her Doctoral degree in Commerce and presented papers in various State, National and International level seminars and workshops. She is an executive member in AIACHE, New Delhi since 2017. She is the Treasurer in the (Executive Board) Principal’s Association of Bharathiar University. AIACHE has awarded Dr. Jemimah Winston the prestigious national award “AIACHE Best Principal's Award” on August 20, 2021 for educational leadership, academic excellence, educational innovations and commitment to high standards of professional ethics.

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

“My connection with education is God’s Plan”

If I inculcate good values, interests and intellect into my students, they carry such good things into the society and serve as a catalyst i.e. the changing agent. Batches after batches our students are passing out and are placed in high positions. They are spread not only in India but all over the world. Even students who studied under me are working in our College. They used to say,”Madam, I am following your style of teaching in my Profession” These were the factors that enabled me to connect myself with education.

What is your philosophy of leadership?

“A leader should be a servant”

The Holy Bible says: “To serve; not to be served”. This position is given by God. We cannot boast for anything. But at the same time, we are answerable to God. I try to understand my staff, students and their parents and do justice to my conscience. I should be a channel of blessing and not a curse.

What do you see as the college’s greatest strengths and how can it be enhanced?

“The College focuses on imparting holistic and value based education to the students”

The college has well equipped facilities for academic, extracurricular and sports activities enhancing a holistic development of the young students. The faculty of the college are experienced, highly efficient and well qualified to cater to the academic needs as well as to provide personal care in order to bring out their hidden talents and to instill knowledge in them and to improve their individual capabilities.

What would you say are the best practices in the courses you are offering?

“A mentor-mentee system is followed to cater to the individual’s needs”

The College focuses on serving the community through various Outreach programs initiated by the students and staff. The Department of Social work has a special wing that works for the “Rehabilitation of the Women Prisoners”. Every department has an association that functions efficiently under the guidance of a faculty and various department activities and competitions are organized by the Association enhancing their leadership skills.

How do you tend to establish a healthy relationship and environment in your institute?

“The college follows a Participative Management approach in administration”

In support of the management the faculty in committees coordinate various activities of the College like admission, conduct of exams, maintaining discipline, functioning of hostel and mess etc. The College is student centric where the Principal and the faculty are easily approachable and accessible for the students even after the working hours for the welfare of the students. Opportunities are provided for staff and students to express their opinion and thoughts creating a friendly atmosphere in the campus.

Do you offer any extracurricular activities/ programs to enhance the skills of the students or expose them to real world challenges?

“Workshops, Seminars, Trainings are organized for the skill development of the students”

The College provides a plethora of opportunities to enhance their skills through extracurricular activities. The Fine Arts Association of the College conducts Inter Collegiate Competitions and motivates students to participate in various competitions where unique skills of the students are showcased at frequent intervals. There are various clubs like Rotaract Club, Eco club, Drama Club etc. that provide a platform for the students to acquire as well as exhibit their creative and artistic skills.
