Ar. Amol Patil is an Associate professor at the Smt K.L. Tiwari College of Architecture, Mumbai. He has completed his post-graduation and is practicing and teaching since 2011. His other areas of interest include work on Architectural, Interior Design, Urban Design, Landscape, and graphic design projects as well. He believes in learning constantly and reckons that it can be done with the help of every possible medium. And to keep up with his spirit of learning, he’s pursuing a Master's degree in Archaeology from Mumbai university.
What are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?
“To be able to contribute to all kinds of teaching and learning processes”
Our focus is always on creating individuals who can express themselves creatively. Learners that are sensitive towards the contexts, who are sound in technical knowledge, and can fulfill their responsibilities professionally in our architecture industry once they graduate. As a senior faculty of the college, I make sure that I am approachable for any kind of advice and help the students clarify their doubts immediately.
How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects and make it industry-oriented?
“We invite industry professionals for workshops, seminars, and guest lectures”
The architecture profession requires a great balance of technical and practical knowledge along with a sound understanding of culture and philosophies. We have a curriculum that emphasizes this balance.
Our professors are industry professionals and very dedicatedly they work with students for their wholesome development. They cover practical, technical, and creative design knowledge. Additionally, we have a planned calendar in place for each academic year where we introduce various aspects of practical knowledge. We also have visiting faculty members for our design and technical studio sessions.

What are the best practices offered by the department to the students which help them gain necessary skills?

We focus on creating a sound and conducive environment for learning. To achieve this we have developed practices where a student can learn and enjoy learning. Our architectural design studios are well thought out to cover a great range of design projects. Our students regularly participate in various design competitions which provide the necessary exposure. We design our study tours in such a manner that students get to see and understand great works of architecture within India and outside India as well. College festivals and exhibitions of students’ work are also a part of the planned academic year to provide them a platform to showcase their talent and skills.
Do you have any extracurricular activities to enhance the skills of the students?
“A focus on comprehensive growth by participation in socio-cultural activities”
Yes, like I said our entire academic calendar is filled with programs like Seminars, Workshops, Elective Modules, Special guest Lectures where students can interact with industry experts. This also provides great opportunities where students of different ethnic, cultural, economic backgrounds can interact, interchange ideas, and work on solutions collectively.
How does the curriculum of your college ensure the best practice of the industry?
“The syllabus of all the subjects gives a clear scope and objectives of the content”
The student has to get the knowledge and understanding and develop opinions and beliefs through the learning processes. The curriculum is regularly updated and allows for flexibility in learning. It is designed to induce students with a strong sense with which they can develop their creativity along-with social, cultural, and ecological responsibilities.

What are the interventions you bring in apart from the curriculum to train the students?
“Help students to develop a creative perspective and become successful future architects”
One of the great aspects of Architecture is creativity and keeping your creative spirit alive throughout your career. A creative mind can get inspired by any possible object, a piece of literature, or any visuals. We try to include films, great pieces of literature, paintings, and sculptural works to inspire students to create great work.
What do you see as the college’s greatest strengths and how can they be enhanced?
“The combination of young, dynamic & experienced faculty creates an atmosphere where learning always prevails”
The faculty members are our greatest strength. They bring so much experience with them to the table that it creates a full spectrum in front of the students. We have great young faculty members with their young energy. To top that we have our management which provides us continuous support. We keep on enhancing ourselves because to be a good faculty member you have to be a good learner.
