Dr Kumar R Rao is the Head of the Civil Engineering department at the Jyothy Institute of Technology, Bangalore. He obtained his Bachelor and Master’s degree in Civil Engineering and Doctoral degree in the domain of Sustainable Watershed Management using Remote sensing and GIS. He is the recognized doctoral guide for a renowned University and has guided many undergraduate, post-graduate and military engineering projects. He has a total of 31 years of teaching, professional and research experience and has numerous research papers to his credit in National, International and refereed journals. He has completed seven funded projects and several courses. His area of interest includes Water Resources, Environmental Management, GIS, Remote Sensing, Concrete Technology, Construction Engineering and Management.
What are your responsibilities towards the students as a HOD?

My responsibility is to ensure proper academic planning, delivery and evaluation of theoretical and practical instructions. Also, to guide them in the performance of practical tasks and skill development exercises.
How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?
“Both groups are instructed to always have a positive attitude towards the curriculum and institution”
Plans are derived to make provision for structured teaching by the Faculty with enthusiasm and with passion. I also give holistic instructions of informative nature to students and faculty on professional development for better career prospects.
How do you strategize the curriculum and how often it gets updated?
“We ensure and formulate academic materials that have practical relevance and align with skill development”
The department evolves its vision and mission to focus on the objectives of students and their needs. Accordingly, it identifies resources for arriving at strategies. The department develops and uses faculty expertise and experiences as per the academic objectives. How does your department prepare students for Higher education and placements?

Yes, we organize several extracurricular activities for our student’s benefit. These activities enable them to apply academic skills in a real-world context as required for all round improved education. It also enhances outside classroom skill development. The extracurricular activities are developed to have an open mind in students to pick up new skills, views and interests.

When I came to college, my vision for the academic progress of the department was to have a clear understanding of academic norms and the greater vision. In this direction, I am trying to empower all the students and faculty members with a learning cum achievement academic environment. This is expected to essentially bring out high-quality teaching practice and value-added research. It should be able to equip them with the knowledge, skills and dispositions for lifelong learning.
