Dr Kumar R Rao is the Head of the Civil Engineering department at the Jyothy Institute of Technology, Bangalore. He obtained his Bachelor and Master’s degree in Civil Engineering and Doctoral degree in the domain of Sustainable Watershed Management using Remote sensing and GIS. He is the recognized doctoral guide for a renowned University and has guided many undergraduate, post-graduate and military engineering projects. He has a total of 31 years of teaching, professional and research experience and has numerous research papers to his credit in National, International and refereed journals. He has completed seven funded projects and several courses. His area of interest includes Water Resources, Environmental Management, GIS, Remote Sensing, Concrete Technology, Construction Engineering and Management.

What are your responsibilities towards the students as a HOD?

“Be able to help students in all aspects of their academic life for constant growth”

My responsibility is to ensure proper academic planning, delivery and evaluation of theoretical and practical instructions. Also, to guide them in the performance of practical tasks and skill development exercises. 

How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty? 

“Both groups are instructed to always have a positive attitude towards the curriculum and institution”

Plans are derived to make provision for structured teaching by the Faculty with enthusiasm and with passion. I also give holistic instructions of informative nature to students and faculty on professional development for better career prospects.

How do you strategize the curriculum and how often it gets updated?

“We ensure and formulate academic materials that have practical relevance and align with skill development”

The department evolves its vision and mission to focus on the objectives of students and their needs. Accordingly, it identifies resources for arriving at strategies. The department develops and uses faculty expertise and experiences as per the academic objectives. Keeping into account the specifics of each task, we incorporate planned development including creation of methods and processes that befits the students.

How does your department prepare students for Higher education and placements?

“Detailing proficient faculty members as career counsellors”

  • The department career counsellors provide guidance and mentoring for all choice based career options such as Placements, Entrepreneurship, and Higher Studies. 
  • They will also be unveiling the real-life functions of any company and short industrial trips become an integral part of the curriculum. 
  • These are arranged and organized by the department. Internships are another alternative to provide complete know-how of the company. 
  • The students undergo training at the actual physical locations. These are of utter importance as they give the students the much required experiential learning.

How do you help your students to strive in the current competitive world?

The atmosphere of competitiveness is introduced to enable students to excel. The expectations are set high to make the students work harder to achieve. Students are instructed to have a positive mindset to perform according to the required ethical process irrespective of the competition. The students are also told about the consequences owing to non-performance. The issues regarding the importance of repeated success and collaborative development are inculcated into the students for coping with the outside world.

Do you have any extracurricular activities to enhance the skills of the students?

“Our extracurricular activities are designed to support and reinforce the academic lessons”

Yes, we organize several extracurricular activities for our student’s benefit. These activities enable them to apply academic skills in a real-world context as required for all round improved education. It also enhances outside classroom skill development. The extracurricular activities are developed to have an open mind in students to pick up new skills, views and interests.

What has been your vision for this Institute?

When I came to college, my vision for the academic progress of the department was to have a clear understanding of academic norms and the greater vision. In this direction, I am trying to empower all the students and faculty members with a learning cum achievement academic environment. This is expected to essentially bring out high-quality teaching practice and value-added research. It should be able to equip them with the knowledge, skills and dispositions for lifelong learning.
