Dr S Prabhanjan is the Head of the CSE Department at Jyothy Institute of Technology, Bangalore. He has completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering and M.Tech in Computer Science & Engineering. His areas of research interest are Image Processing, Pattern Recognition, Data Structures, Theory of Computation, etc. As an educator, he has organized several FDP’s, workshops, online Webinar, conferences, and Technical Talk for students and faculty members. What are your responsibilities towards the students?

“To lead the department in the right direction and reach the vision”

  • Developing a research-oriented teaching-learning environment is the main responsibility.

  • Monitor and review the performance of faculty members and students.

How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

“By establishing a transparent grievance redressal system and allowing open communication”

Identifying the strength and weakness of each faculty is a key factor for any academic institution. The faculties are encouraged to keep a positive attitude and teach with enthusiasm and passion in class. This eventually builds a trusting relationship with their students.

How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects?

“Providing practical oriented training and assignments and guiding them accordingly”

  • Subjects involving programming languages include hands-on activities. The students are assessed with practical assignments.
  • Using the relevant software tools that are currently used in industries.
  • Practical demonstrations of core subjects using simulation tool or IDE.
  • Through organizing workshops, Seminar, Tech Talks from industry experts, and allowing students to participate freely.
  •  Team Formation and Team project development for particular concepts help the students for practical exposure.

What are the best practices offered by the department for the students?

“For practically oriented courses, partial curriculum is delivered by industry experts”

Following events are organized by the department every semester for students to gain necessary skills.

  • Guest lecture and Webinars from experienced faculties and industry experts.
  • For practical oriented courses, 8 to 10 hours of the curriculum are delivered by industry experts. Students get insight into how the concepts of curriculum can be used in the industry.
  • Encouraging students to register for online and NPTEL courses.
  • Motivating the students to participate in hackathons, meetups, codathons, etc.

How does your department prepare students for Higher education and Placements?

“Placement assistance on departmental level along with global higher education opportunities”

There has been a consistent improvement in the placement since the inception of the department. For the past two years, 90% placements have been provided for eligible students. However, very few students are showing interest in higher education. The department provides guidance for the GATE exam and encourages the students to enrol into higher education. Additionally, guidance for higher education in foreign countries is also given to the students by arranging overseas education talks. We also inculcate the research culture during bachelor’s degree into the students.

How does the department enhance the skills of the faculty members?

“Encouraging faculty members to take up NPTEL courses and attend FDP every semester”

  • Faculty members are encouraged and sponsored by the college to undergo various training programs organized by industries and academic institutions.
  • College has an exclusive R&D centre (CIIRC) where faculty are encouraged to participate.

Most of the students in today's age lack the research bent of mind. I feel we should encourage them to develop that curiosity. This will always keep them updated in terms of technology, and their knowledge base. Also, focus on multidisciplinary education and learn the processes followed by the organization.
