Dr. Renu Shungloo is working as the Head of the Physical Education Department at IIS University. She completed her PhD from the University of Rajasthan, PG (Academic) and UG from Rajasthan University. She also did her PG (Professional) M.P.Ed. from Nagpur University. She has 43 years of successful Teaching and Coaching experience. Her trainees have represented international, combined university, state and national school teams and attended Indian coaching camps and brought many laurels for their respective institutions.
What are your roles and responsibilities?
“To establish sync with them along with offering opportunities to learn and grow”
Being the HOD of the Physical Education department, the utmost priority for me is to enable the students to receive skilled education in the subject, in a positive, encouraging and effective working environment. Also, I have to maintain cooperation and coordination between the students and professors of the subject.
How do you establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?
“By allowing them to express their concerns and suggestions freely”
In my viewpoint, maintaining healthy relations with the students as well as faculty members needs a flexible approach. I interact with them during workshops, events, seminars, etc which we conduct throughout the session. And I always keep the college and a departmental environment open for suggestions and advice to nurture effective communication.
How do you bring in a practical and industry-oriented approach towards subjects?
“Through the exploratory study of the subject and value-added courses”
To enforce a practical approach, it is important to ensure that we keep updated with the relevant changes in consonance with the active situations. Besides this, professional courses such as B.P.Ed. and M.P.Ed. along with some value-added courses need to be inculcated in the curriculum, and all this will ensure that students are being prepared for the future in the best possible environment.

How do you strategize and update the curriculum to make it befitting for the students?
“By making emerging demands as part of our curriculum on regular basis”
While drafting and updating our curriculum, any changes that prove to be important for the curriculum are inculcated without any further delay. We always keep our students and faculties updated with the latest needs and demands of society and we also take feedback from students after every other month to resolve their issues.
What career opportunities are available for students after pursuing these courses?
“It gives ample career choices in govt. and private organizations”
In today’s world, where sports and physical education is gaining so much attention, students possess quite a bright future regarding participation in various national and international tournaments and professional courses as well. Regarding career options, there is a wide scope for students including govt. jobs, sports journalism, sports officer and professor in various universities and colleges, fitness and health instructor, gym trainer, commentator and many more.
How do you prepare your students to cope with this competitive world?
“We conduct various activities to boost their mental and physical fitness”
Being a student of physical education enable me to become physically and mentally sound, and whatever experience I have gained during my journey from the start, I try to inculcate all those qualities in my students using different techniques. The students are infused with skills such as time management, smart work and team building which brings them one step ahead of the pack.
What extracurricular activities are organized in college to enhance the skills of the students?
“Sports events along with guest sessions are some of the learning windows”
In this respect, various co-curricular activities are organized by our colleges such as the West Zone and all India Inter-University, State-level and National-level tournaments, Annual Sports Day, Interclass Competitions and promotional events for different sports leagues including the Pro Kabaddi League, etc. Guest lectures by International Sports Personalities as well as the University Alumni are also organized to motivate our students. These events make them realize the hard work one needs to put in to be successful and what the world actually demands.
What are the challenges you are facing to uplift the quality of education of your department?
“Changing typical mindset for subject and opportunities it offers is definitely a hurdle”
Physical education as a subject is often neglected in comparison to other major subjects. Loopholes such as subject being an elective one, lack of knowledge regarding the vast career options this subject offers, along with an orthodox mentality still makes the subject not a common choice among the students.
What are the approaches you bring in apart from curriculum to teach the students?
“I cheer them to make the best use of their skills through competitions”
The students are persuaded to participate in various sports activities and join the practice sessions of the games which are played in the University. From time to time guest lectures by University’s Sports Alumni makes the students believe in themselves and in-grows in them a feeling of self-confidence.

Any valuable advice would you like to give the students for a prosperous career ahead?
“Keep yourself fit and learn new things”
I would like to suggest my students that get actively involved in the various programs and events which are organized by the university and show their active participation in those games. Because it will enable you to carry out an overall evolution of your physical and mental growth. Keep yourself updated with the latest happenings with respect to changing industry and society demands.
