KIT Principal: Dr N. Mohan Das Gandhi Interview

Dr. N. Mohan Das Gandhi is the Principal of Kalaignar Karunanidhi Institute of Technology (KIT), Coimbatore. He has done B.E., M.E., M.B.A., and Ph.D. as part of his academics. His area of specialization is Production Engineering. He has a total of 37 years of experience in teaching, research, and administration. He believes that being an effective leader, one can respond positively to any situation and rise above challenges. His leadership view is ‘Leading by Example’ and is exhibited through his qualities of courage and commitment.

What is your philosophy of leadership?

“To have a well-built team that shares a common vision of academic growth”

Our faculty members serve as the backbone of the Institution. We have a team with a decentralized hierarchy allowing us to function transparently. I strongly believe that the three pillars of any organization are: faculty members, learning aspirants and good infrastructure. I do believe in fair treatment of every individual as they demonstrate a greater contribution in the field of education. 

How do you tend to establish a healthy environment in your institute?

“Creating an open platform for conversation and exchange of thoughts”

The institution has adopted the student’s centric approach. Students have formal and informal interactions with faculty members to raise their concerns. As I have adopted an open-door policy, students can approach or discuss their views at any point of the day. This has enabled us to understand the needs of the student community in a better way. Thinking from the current generation perspective, the students are encouraged to participate in technical and non-technical events.

How does the curriculum of KIT differ from other colleges?

“Our syllabus exclusively aligns with the dynamic industry needs”

The status of autonomy has given us the flexibility to design the curriculum based on the emerging trends. We cherish the academic guidance received from various eminent leaders and subject experts. This in turn has enabled us to build a better curriculum and produce graduates to meet industry requirements. After obtaining NBA and NAAC accreditation with an ‘A’ grade, the institution can maintain the parameters laid for its quality sustenance.

What are the various activities providing industry exposure to the students at KIT?

“Incubation centres, digital interactions with top education leaders and sessions on best industry practices”

We enable our students by giving them exposure to industrial aspects and make them industry-ready. In addition to theoretical learning, these measures are created through experiential learning for both faculty and students. Similarly, to bridge the gap between the industry and institution, we regularly organize workshops and seminars with eminent Industry experts. Additionally, the students from every department are funded through KIT’s Dr Vidhya Incubation Centre to exhibit their innovative projects.

How does the curriculum of KIT ensure industrial relevance in the current times?

To cater to the growing needs of the industry, the institution has sophisticated and well-equipped laboratories. Students are exposed to the latest Technology through Industry Powered Laboratories like BMW-SkillNext Initiative, Hyundai Powered Thermal Lab, Cadence Research Lab, Mahindra and Mahindra Thermal lab, Cisco Network lab, etc. Also, our MoU’s with prominent companies have helped the students to opt for internships, training, Industrial projects and Industrial visit.

What do you see as KIT’s greatest strengths?

“We provide the appropriate training to bridge the gap between Academia and Industry”

• KIT believes in training prospective engineers in their chosen field. Intensive training in soft skills and other management skills are provided by the placement cell of the institution. 
• In addition to the technical skills, we also provide training to the students pursuing a career in Civil Service. 
• KIT has witnessed a good placement record and has bagged the National Award of Excellence for placements from Recruitment Analysis Council, New Delhi.
• The Entrepreneur Development Cell (EDC) conducts various entrepreneur development programs to help the budding entrepreneur. 
• KIT also promotes knowledge-based and technical driven start-ups.

How does the institute help in improving the skills of the students?

The institution provides several opportunities to demonstrate, learn and practice social skills. To exhibit the hidden talents of the students, various clubs like Literary Club, Aptitude, Photography, Rotaract and Toastmaster Club are formed. Through NCC, NSS and YRC, the students of KIT are allowed to render their service to the nation.
