Dr. Saravanakumar has been working as the Dean of Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Tamilnadu College of Engineering, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. He has done M.E. and PhD as part of his education. He has an amazing 25 years of Teaching and Industrial experience. He was associated with a number of reputable institutions before joining TNCE, including BITS PILANI University's Dubai campus, Manipal University and others. In addition to this, he has 14 years of research experience in addition to 3 years of industrial experience and has also published more than 25 research papers in the field of Instrumentation and Control Engineering.

Being a Dean of Tamilnadu College of Engineering, what are your responsibilities towards the students?

"It is to educate and train my students on latest technologies"

As a Dean and Professor of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at TNCE, I am responsible to ensure that the students get a clear understanding of the subjects and concepts while I teach them. In addition to this, helping students to develop required intellectual and interpersonal skills in them, preparing them for campus placements, competitive exams, and for their careers while maintaining high social standards also comes under the scope of my responsibilities.


How do you establish a healthy relationship with your fellow faculty and students?

"By being available whenever they need my support, guidance and supervision"

For the purpose of maintaining a cordial relationship with everyone, I regularly communicate with them to understand things and their issues and queries from their point of view. Apart from that, I try to make myself available whenever they need my support and assistance for academic and non-academic activities. Lastly, I keep inspiring them to do better and upgrade their skills , give them constructive feedback whenever required to have smooth understanding. 


How would you describe your leadership style?

"I believe in democratic and secular way of working"

I firmly believe that my commitment towards my work, knowledge which I have gained over years, and upbeat attitude are the main pillars of my personality. And to ensure everyone grows on both personal and professional level while working with me, I provide them full support for academic and research work. And when it comes to students, I regularly motivate them to excel in studies and co-curricular activities. Also, I believe in democratic way of working and involve all my faculty members in the college's small and big decisions. And it is my responsibility as a Dean to ensure that every faculty is aware of our principles and the course we are on in accordance with Anna University and its institutions.


How do you strategize and update the curriculum to make it beneficial for the students?

"We don't have much scope to update it but we use innovative methods to implement University designed curriculum"

We follow the curriculum designed by Anna University who regularly keep updating it as per changing industrial requirements and academic standards. And depending on the curriculum University design, we draft the plans to inculcate and implement those programs in our college curriculum. My department faculties work strategically and set goals semester wise to deliver the defined syllabus.

What do you see as the greatest strengths of your Electrical Department?

"Our students, teaching staff and college infrastructure are major source of our strength"

The main pillars of our department are definitely our highly educated and extensively experienced faculty members, our college infrastructure in the form of modern laboratories and lastly our placement statistics over the years. Along with all this, our students are also our source of strength because we exist due to them. 


Which extracurricular activities are organized in college to enhance the skills of the students?

"Activities like seminars, cultural events and industry experts sessions are arranged by us"

Our college totally respects the fact that extra-curricular activities are important along with academics to keep students physically and mentally strong. Hence a wide variety of activities including technical symposiums, industry interaction events, project competitions, sports activities and cultural fests are regularly conducted by our college. Also internship opportunities in reputed organizations are offered to eligible students by us in collaboration with our industry partners. 


How do you train students for placements?

"We conduct mock interviews, personality development sessions and placement training regularly"

As we all know that securing a good job in an esteemed organization is the dream of most of the Engineering students once they finish their graduation. And suitable training is required to prepare students for the corporate world, hence firstly we explore the interest areas of each student so that we can provide them suitable apprenticeship and expert sessions. Apart from this, regular counseling sessions, internal technical and personality development training with the support of placement trainers and reputed faculties, mock interviews, group discussions are organized by the dedicated placement and training cell of our institute.

Any valuable advice which you would like to give to the students for a prosperous career ahead? 

"Stay perseverant, dedicated and focused towards your life goals and keep learning new things"

I would advise my students and youths of our society to Students should practice positive thinking and perseverance. Also take responsibility for your actions and life, define short term achievable goals for yourself. While you study any difficult topics, discuss it with your teachers and friends who can help you understand them better. Attempt quizzes and reteach the topics to each other because the best way to learn is to teach others. Don't limit yourself and never be afraid to explore new things and places.
