Dr.M. Seethapathi is a Head of Civil Department in the TamilNādu college of engineering, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. He did B.E, M.E at TamilNādu college of engineering Coimbatore and Ph.D. at Anna university Chennai. He is a Professor and Head of Civil engineering department; he had 15 years of teaching and 3 years industry experience. He is expertise in the field of structural engineering and his area of specialization is too. He published more than 15 research papers in the reputed international journals with SCOPUS indexed journals in Structural Engineering.

Being a HOD, what are the roles and responsibilities towards the students in Tamilnadu college of engineering?

“Upgrade students' knowledge, arrange special coaching classes and guide them for competitive examinations”

Identifying slow learners and Bright students categories in the classes and arrange special coaching classes for them based on their academic performance. We guide the students to participate in the National level technical program. Further, it is also focusing the students to face the various competitive examinations to develop their inter knowledge. We are also encouraging and motivating the students to pursue higher education or research which will be helpful to build and upgrade their knowledge. Our mentors take special care to educate the students on both discipline and ethical values which are expected by the society.


How do you tend to establish healthy relationships with the fellow faculty?

“Organize departmental meetings, special training programmes and other activities for faculties”

We maintain the cordial relations with fellow faculty members every day and working as a team spirit. Our Department conduct departmental meeting every week end to discuss information pertaining to academic and departmental activities to improve quality of teaching. We are offering the special training programme for the newly recruited faculty members to improve the emerging trends. Our campus focus to maintain the healthy environment and strong bond among the fellow faculty member through celebrating their auspicious days, arranging the special tour in every semester end to refresh them and attending family functions. We also arrange stress management programmes like Yoga and Meditation for the faculty members. These kinds of activities can make them to approach higher authorities easily.

As far as Leadership quality concerned, we maintaining the quality skills Selflessness, Honesty, Transparency, Trustworthiness Perseverance having capacity to listen others points, Critical, lateral thinking, organization skill, flexibility, and continuous learning through experience for the development of the department as a whole. Executing the works at a time, monitoring the faculty members activities with a good command, organizing the various programmes for the welfare and betterment of the students, and faculty. 


How do you strategize the curriculum and get updated to make it beneficial for the students?

“Frame syllabus as per latest industrial development on campus”

Once in a Four Years, university is framing the syllabus in accordance with the latest development and requirement expected by the industry in the thrust areas. Particular Committee formulated by university to frame the syllabus and we represent the salient points required for the various points. It suggests the inductions of Laboratories in their Curriculum.

What do you see as the greatest strengths of Tamilnadu college of engineering?

Highly Learned, Well Qualified and Dedicated faculty members, Laboratories and Separate special Project lab are the great strength for the department to make students to learn. Our campus signed MoU with various reputed industries. We have an excellent alumni network all over the world to upgrade the students' knowledge. It might be to establish a good academic resources center. And, our department regularly organize various special programmes in the emerging field.


Do you have any extracurricular activities or programs to enhance the skills of the students or expose them to real world challenges?

“Extracurricular activities such as NSS, YRC and RRC wings to acquire the overall personality development of students”

Civil department students are regularly participating in various extracurricular activities organized by NSS, YRC and RRC wings to acquire overall personality development and make students to render services to the downtrodden people. Civil department Students are also participating in the sports events and representing as a team in the sports meet organized by university at state or national level.


How do you train students for placements and elaborate the placement process in Tamilnadu college of engineering?

“Provide training, technical skills, and mock tests for students to grab placements”

In every Semester, we are organizing short term special training programme in the area of soft skills and technical skills to cope up with requirement for attending placement programmes which are based on students' needs. We encourage students to attend a special training programme to develop their skills. Regularly, we conduct mock tests in accordance with the requirements expected by the company with help of alumni or reputed placement trainers. Finally, we used to segregate the student groups based on the caliber level of the students stipulated by the industries where students can attend the placements based on their area of interest and needs.

As a Head of the department, I advise the students to have an attitude to grow skills and knowledge to maintain constant career growth in their future. They should stay focused with continuous learning, build a wide network, and pursue their passion to strive for excellence. Students should stay motivated and become entrepreneurs rather than Job seekers in this competitive world. Finally, I advise the students to have a balanced approach with their personal life and either studies or professional life.
