The programme focuses on aspects of journalism such as news gathering and writing, media laws and ethics, interpretative reporting and computer technology skills.
The journalism programme is among the first introduced in the faculty, initially known as the School of Mass Communication which was established in 1972. The programme recognizes the role of journalism in contributing towards domestic, social and political developments, its significance to globalization and the existence of new challenges within the mass communication environment.
The faculty has extended the focus of this programme beyond the traditional stances of the mass media by exploring contemporary approaches of news gathering and reporting, news writing, journalism ethics, computer-assisted journalism and online journalism.
These efforts are supplemented through initiatives with the participation of the industry in diversifying the students' requisite skills. The programme obligates in producing ethical journalism graduates who are prepared to encounter the challenges in the media industry.
