Ans. The Dynamic Positioning Operator's Certificate is only issued by the Nautical Institute, UK, and only the Nautical Institute-accredited DP institutes offer Dynamic Positioning courses.
Q.2 How many different types of Dynamic Positioning Operators Certificates are there?
Ans. DP Operator Certificates come in three types: unclassified, limited and unlimited. With an Unclassed Certificate you can work on any class of DP vessel, with a Limited DP Certificate you can work on only DP Class I vessels, and with an Unlimited DP Certificate you can work on any class of DP vessels.
Q.3 What do I need to do to upgrade my Limited Dynamic Positioning Operator's Certificate?
Ans. To upgrade to a DP Class II or Class III vessel, you have to complete 60 DP days after you obtain the Limited DP Certificate. In order to receive the Unlimited DP Certificate, you will need to submit the originals to Nautical Institute.
Q.4 To obtain the DP Certificate, how much time do I have to complete the DP Operator's Scheme?
Ans. It takes four years to complete the entire DP Scheme, i.e., from the date of completion of the Basic DP Course, in order to obtain at least one of the DP Certificates. The DP Certificate application must be submitted within four years if one or more elements have not been completed and one or more elements are yet to be completed.
Q.5 How does time served on DP vessels count towards the DP Basic Course?
Ans. For the purpose of applying for a DP certificate, DP time gained prior to attending the Basic (Induction) Course is not counted.
