Currently, SIMS, Lonavala, offers a one-year course called Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS). Once a cadet has successfully completed the course, he or she becomes a deck cadet aboard a ship. During the 18 months of training onboard a sea-going vessel, cadets receive free boarding and lodging as well as a stipend. To qualify as a third officer on any sea going vessel, he must obtain the Second Mate's Certificate of Competency from the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India. Upon achieving the Second Mate's Certificate of Competency, a cadet can also apply to IMU (Indian Maritime University) for a degree in Applied Nautical Science.
