The doctoral program "Microbiology and Biochemistry" is a member of the Göttingen Graduate School for Neurosciences, Biophysics, and Molecular Biosciences (GGNB). It is hosted by the Göttingen Center for Molecular Biosciences (GZMB) and is conducted jointly by the University of Göttingen and the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry.
The research-oriented program is taught in English and open to students who hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) in biosciences, chemistry, physics, medicine, or related fields.
The Microbiology and Biochemistry program accepts students who are interested in all problems of microbiology and biochemistry. Training is aimed at achieving a comparative understanding of microorganisms' work at a molecular level and how they contribute to interactions in their natural environments; a critical sense of how to apply comprehensive genomic analysis tools, and an ability to set up and test conceptual models for molecular functions, color functions.

The semester fees comprise administration fees, student body fees, and a Student union fee. The summer semester fee totals $476.54 for 2021. While the Winter semester fee totals $470.43 for 2021. So the yearly fee for attending this program is $946.97.
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- Master's degree with very good grades in the natural sciences or mathematics, including a Master's thesis with a minimum duration of six months.
- Please note that due to the peculiarities of the German university system, medical degrees are not considered equivalent to an MSc in the natural sciences.
- In the case of MSc degrees from abroad, it may be that the faculty requests the fulfillment of additional requirements before admission to doctoral studies (e.g. an oral exam, a written progress report after 6 months, etc.).
Indian Eligibility:
Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Applicants whose first language is not English have to prove a good working knowledge of English. Their proficiency in English must be certified in an internationally recognized test.
- The language test certificate should be no more than two years old at the time of application.
- Exempted from the requirement to provide proof of language proficiency are students whose first language is English and students with at least two-year study or work experience in an English-speaking country within the last three years.
The minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test to get admission to this program.
