Georgetown University’s Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Degree program (MALS) provides an interdisciplinary curriculum in the liberal arts that is balanced across the humanities, sciences, and the social sciences spanning the Classical era to the Postmodern age. The curriculum includes broadly based courses that are designed with both an interdisciplinary and values/ethics related focus.
Knowledge is ineffective without understanding, and that understanding is achieved only through interaction. Georgetown's program focuses on the exchange of dialogue, ideas, and perspectives that define humanity and continue to influence daily experiences.
Courses have roots in the past with an eye to the future. Throughout your time in the program, you will study the Crusades, the Federalist Papers, the Constitution, Shakespeare, Chaucer, Thomas Jefferson, Gandhi, and the legacy of Greece and Rome. You will explore neuroethics, cyberethics and global bioethics. You will examine the pursuit of peace, religion, politics, existentialism, and the search for meaning. You will scrutinize globalization, the American labor movement, and the values and issues in international affairs. And as you read, discuss, analyze, write, debate, and share within this close-knit community of scholars, you will grow—intellectually, culturally, and professionally.
