Field of Study:
- The research oriented MS (thesis) and PhD degrees require a minimum of 20 semester hours of formal coursework, which includes both core and elective courses. These courses are selected in consultation with the Department's Graduate Program Director, the student's thesis advisory committee and thesis advisor. Each student is also expected to participate in the Department's seminar program where both literature and research seminars are delivered to students and faculty on a weekly basis during the semester.
- In addition, each student takes part in a laboratory rotation program which is designed to expose the student to the available research opportunities in their area of interest.
- MS Students in the Non-Thesis Program take an additional 10 semester hours of coursework in lieu of a thesis.

- Analytical Chemistry (1 semester)
- Literature of Chemistry (1 semester)
- English composition (1 semester)
- Organismal or Population Biology (1 semester)
- Cell Biology or Biochemistry (1 semester)
- Statistics (1 semester)
Required Examinations
- GRE
- All graduate students, regardless of program, take a set of four entrance examinations that are designed to measure their chemistry background: Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Pharmacognosy (covers basic concepts in natural product chemistry, cell biology, and botany).
- Students may take any individual examination more than once, but they are required to pass the entire set of examinations within one year of matriculation.
- Entrance examinations must be scheduled prior to the start of the first semester and are used to determine the student’s level of understanding from undergraduate courses.
- The best way to prepare for the exams is to review your undergraduate course materials.
- The passing percentile for the examinations is 50%, and students must successfully complete each exam to remain in the Pharmacognosy program, OR students may opt to take one or all of these courses at the undergraduate level at USciences, as assigned by Dr. Mckee, and earn a “B-” or better.
