Civil Engineers are in the forefront of technology. They are the leading users of sophisticated high-tech products - applying the very latest concepts in computer-aided design, construction, project scheduling, and cost control. Civil engineering is about community service, sustainable development and environment, and improvement. It involves the conception, planning, analysis, design and construction of facilities essential to modern life, ranging from tunnels to offshore structures to space satellites. Civil engineers are problem solvers, meeting the challenges of pollution, traffic congestion, drinking water, energy needs, urban redevelopment, and community planning.

The degree provides a broad education in engineering of civil infrastructure, and includes 4 emphasize areas (described below):

  • Engineering Mechanics
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Geotechnical Engineering
  • Structural Engineering
  • Water Resources Engineering.

Near graduation, students can elect to take the Civil Engineering?Fundamentals in Engineering (FE) exam. Licensure can be obtained as a Professional Engineer (PE).

Construction Engineering.?Students can elect to take CEEN 360- Introduction to Construction?Engineering, to?gain an overview of construction means, methods and materials, as well as scheduling and contracting construction projects. Upper level courses include CEEN 423- Surveying for Engineers & Infrastructure Design.

Engineering Surveying.?All students take CEEN 331- Civil Engineering Field Session, and may elect to take CEEN 423- Surveying for Engineers & Infrastructure Design.

Environmental??Engineering.?Students can elect to take CEEN 301- Fundamentals of Environmental Science & Engineering I, and pursue advanced studies in?water reclamation, wastewater treatment, ground-water remediation, and sustainable engineering design.?

Geotechnical Engineering.?All students take CEEN 312- Soil Mechanics, CEEN 312L- Soil Mechanics?Lab, and CEEN 415- Foundation Engineering.?Elective courses enable students to study computational methods in geomechanics and environmental geotechnics, surface and subsurface excavations,?geotechnical risk,?and geohazard analysis.?

Structural Engineering.?All Students take CEEN 314- Structural Theory, and either CEEN 443- Design of Steel Structures or CEEN 445- Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures. Students may elect to study Seismic Design, Timber &?Masonry Design, and advanced structural analysis courses.?

Water Resources Engineering.?All students take CEEN 310- Fluid Mechanics for Civil & Environmental Engineering, and may elect to take CEEN 381- Hydrologic & Water Resources Engineering.

It's very rigorous and pertains to many aspects of civil engineering. You can customize your major by choosing electives in your interest of civil, which for me is construction. Many people are fond of structural or geotechnical as emphasis options as well.

Fees

We are a state school so tuition is around 20 thousand in the state or 40 thousand out of state not including room and board. I have student loans through Granite State Management and my parents have Parent Plus Loans. I also get the Colorado Opportunity Fund which is around 300 dollars per class I take.
