Bachelor of Science [B.S] (Geographic Information Science)
Field of Study:
$34,800/Yr
The degree programs enable students to apply both scientific and mathematical principles to model the Earth. The students are trained to gather geospatial data via land surveying and convert this data, along with other data resources, into manageable maps and databases for display and analysis. A career in the geospatial industry is a student's opportunity to explore the world and utilize the latest computer technologies and sciences. In addition to a number of careers in the geospatial industry, all graduates are eligible to take the licensing examination for Surveyor in Training (SIT) and, ultimately, Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS).
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is a unique campus on the Gulf coast. They offer the only combined geomatics and GIS focused Bachelor of Science Degree in Geographic Information Science in the nation that is also accredited by the Applied Science Accreditation Commission of ABET. The Geographic Information Science program is one of the top degrees in the industry.
The program appeals to students who
- Enjoy working with advanced technology
- Want to travel and see the world while getting paid a professional salary
- Would like to work outside one day and with computers the next
- Want to build the next generation of mapping technology
ABET Accreditation of Undergraduate Geographic Information Science Degree
Accreditation is a voluntary, non-governmental process of peer review that simply assures that a program or institution meets established quality standards by requiring an educational institution or program to meet certain, defined standards or criteria. Accreditation is sometimes confused with certification. In general, institutions and programs are accredited, and individuals are certified. The Geographic Information Science BS Degree Program is Accredited by the Applied Science Accreditation Commission of ABET and comply with the ?Program Criteria for Survey, Geomatics and Similarly Named Applied Science Programs.? Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi's Geographic Information Science program is the only Texas University with an accredited GIS and Geomatics degree program.
Student Outcomes
They have determined several outcomes that you will achieve in your classes in GISc. You might not cover each in every course, but their goal is to meet each outcome listed. Program outcomes are narrow statements that describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation. These relate to the skills, knowledge, and behaviors that students acquire in the course of the program.
- an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and applied sciences
- an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
- an ability to formulate or design a system, process, or program to meet desired needs
- an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams
- an ability to identify and solve applied science problems
- an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
- an ability to communicate effectively
- the broad education necessary to understand the impact of solutions in a global and societal context
- a recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in life-long learning
- a knowledge of contemporary issues
- an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern scientific and technical tools necessary for professional practice
- boundary and/or land surveying
- mapping
- geospatial information systems
- photogrammetry and remote sensing
- geodesy
