As the official or national language of more than 20 countries spanning 4 continents and the native language of over 400 million people, Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. With some 40 million speakers in the United States and a long history in the U.S. Southwest, Spanish is a local as well as a global language.Spanish language skills are useful in careers in business, health care and social services, government and foreign relations and service industries. Majoring in a world language is also an excellent idea for students who would like to live and work in other countries.
- Employment: World language majors have excellent job prospects after graduation. According to a 2013 study, world language majors with experience had strong rates of employment, particularly compared to other humanities and social sciences majors. Experienced college graduates with a major in world languages had average earnings of $52,000, and graduate degree holders had average earnings of $63,000.
