- The biochemistry and molecular biology (BMB) interdisciplinary major is designed in recognition of the intimacy of the subject matter, objectives, and methodology of biochemistry and a variety of related biological disciplines.
- The biochemistry and molecular biology (BMB) interdisciplinary major is designed for students who wish to focus their curriculum and research on molecular and chemical mechanisms of biological processes. Application for admission to the major is by submission of a declaration of major form to the BMB Committee. Except in unusual cases, this application should be made no later than the end of the sophomore year. Before registering for a thesis, BMB majors must pass junior qualifying examinations in both biology and chemistry.
- Upon completion of the BMB major, through the completion of course work and their senior thesis, a student will have demonstrated that they can think critically and creatively about BMB multidisciplinary topics, plan and execute a sustained research project, and clearly communicate their understanding/findings both in a written and oral presentation. The student will be able to:
- demonstrate understanding of foundational material that spans levels of the biological and chemical organization;
- integrate perspectives to draw connections between subdisciplines;
- choose and define important and contemporary topics of inquiry from the field; develop new knowledge and/or ideas from this;
- analyze, critique, and evaluate existing scholarship;
- independently investigate that topic with the support of an advisor;
- choose and define a research topic from the major field, and independently investigate that topic with the support of an advisor;
- apply a wide variety of skills learned in their coursework including active involvement in the development of hypotheses and in experimental design, methodological refinement, analysis and interpretation of data, discussion and criticism of research findings, and formal presentation of their work; carefully design and execute experimental or theoretical approaches appropriate to the research topic while adhering to relevant laboratory safety protocols;
- integrate experimental results with existing knowledge to produce original work in a well-written, referenced, and thorough document;
- apply ethical standards to research;
- write a coherent document that is substantially longer than a traditional term paper or project; and
- defend their work orally to a scientific and non-scientific audiences, couching results in the context of accepted BMB models and existing research literature.

- International applicants whose native language is not English are encouraged but not required to submit results of English proficiency.
- Either TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, ACT, or documentation that you attended an English medium school.
- If you attended an English medium school or English medium program, we do not require testing.
- The student’s school completes the school report. This document provides context about students’ s school and aids in the holistic review process.
- Secondary school transcripts can be emailed to admission@reed.edu.
- Transcripts must come from the school to be considered official. The admission committee requires full secondary school transcripts (and college or university records, if any). These transcripts must be translated into English.
- Students studying under a system that requires examination (for example, the International Baccalaureate or the British system) are asked to submit exam results at the time of completion.
