TISS was established in 1936. Being one of the few institutes in India for Social Science courses, TISS Mumbai offers postgraduate and doctoral programs. Courses offered under PG and Doctoral level are MA, M.Sc, MPH, MHA, MLIS, LLM and PhD. & M.Phil respectively. Candidates who have completed their Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject are eligible to apply for the PG courses. Those candidates, who have completed Master's with valid marks can apply to doctoral programs. All the admissions at TISS Mumbai are entrance-based. For PG courses, the entrance exam required is TISSNET (Tata Institute of Social Sciences National Entrance Test).

TISS Mumbai PG Eligibility Criteria
- For MA/ M.Sc. in Urban Policy & Governance, Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in Architecture/ Engineering/ Management/ Geography, Physical Science/ Planning/ Law or Social Science from a recognized University. They must have completed their internship on or before 8 June 2021.
- For MA,M.Sc., and M.L.Sc. programs, candidates must have a Bachelor's or Master's degree or its equivalent from a recognized University. The bridge course pattern should be 10+3+3 / 10+2+2+1 / 10+2+4.
- For MPH and MHA programs, candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in any stream or 4-year Bachelor's degree in medicine or paramedical science, and other 4-year programs such as pharmacy, engineering, law, or veterinary science.
- For the LLM Programs, 50% marks in LL.B degree is required.
