Indira Gandhi National Open University offers a Master of Arts program in Rural Development. The admission for this course is on a merit basis only. The eligibility for this program will be a completion of graduation from any discipline from a recognized University.

IGNOU has been awarded A++ Grade by the NAAC. MA Rural Development program is designed to include all the academic content similar to the idea of rural development in the Indian context. IGNOU MA Rural Dvelopment Assignments 2024

Assignments constitute continuous evaluation. The marks that you secure in the assignments will be counted in your final result. As mentioned earlier, an assignment of a course carries 30% weightage. You are therefore advised to take your assignment seriously. 

Non Submission of Assignment

The TMA for each semester can be downloaded from the Student Zone of the University website. You have to complete the assignment within the due dates specified in the assignment booklet. You will not be allowed to appear for the term-end examination for any course if you do not submit the assignment in time for that course. If you appear in the term-end examination, without submitting the assignments, the result of the term-end examination is liable to be canceled.

IGNOU MA Rural Development Admission Process

The admission process for MA Rural Development program strictly follows the rules proposed by the Academic Council of the University. The candidates are selected on a merit basis. No entrance tests are required to be qualified.

  • The selection criteria will be based on the overall performance in Bachelor’s degree. Performance of candidates in 10th, 12th or equivalent are also considered..
  • The university would release the final merit list of the candidates for this program.
  • Shortlisted candidates must report at the specified Regional centre of the university with all the required documents and attested copies of them.

How to Apply?

Due to the lockdown announced by the Government, the application for MA (RD) program is available only online. Steps to be followed for the MA (RD) program are stated below:

  1. Check out the official website of IGNOU – ignou.ac.in.
  2. Click on the ‘New Registration’ option.
  3. Firstly, register yourself with your valid email ID and acquire your username and password.
  4. Log in with your username and Password.
  5. Fill the application form with relevant details.
  6. Submit the scanned copies of required documents.
  7. Pay the application fee of INR 200 (Non-Refundable) by Credit / Debit Card / through Net banking or by DD drawn in favour of IGNOU payable at Delhi.
  8. Click on ‘Submit’ and take a printout of the submitted application form for future reference.

IGNOU MA Rural Development Program Details - Curriculum, Syllabus

MA Rural Development degree offers mainly a few courses with diversified areas in-depth for the students. There are a set of few compulsory courses available in this program which cannot be ignored.

  • In the first year, each course is of 6 credits except the dissertation and the dissertation is of 12 credits.
  • The optional courses in the second year are 30 credits (6 credits for each course).
  • The course is a total of 66 credits (36 credits for each year).
  • Here, each credit includes the 30 hours of study which comprises different learning activities, including assignments and listening/watching audios and videos.
  • A 6-credit course involves 180 hours of study.
  • In the second year, a student must complete a total of five optional courses.

Program Structure

  • Target Learners: The specific target learners of this course are:
    • Middle and senior-level rural development personnel working in Blocks, District Rural Development Agencies, Departments of State/Union Territories engaged in agricultural development and development of rural areas, planning department/planning boards at State and District levels, banks, cooperative societies, PWD, Power and other development departments working in rural areas.
    • Personnel of VOs or NGOs engaged or interested in rural development.
    • Academics teaching courses in rural development/community development.
    • Persons are interested in enhancing their knowledge and understanding of rural development.
  • Assignments: The assignment is the continuous assessment of theory and practical. The students have to do one assignment for a course. So, the students have to complete four assignments for four compulsory courses and five assignments for five optional courses. These assignments consist of questions and activities that the students must answer from their own places by referring to their blocks. The assignments have a 25% weightage in the final evaluation.
  • Attendance: The students must maintain 75% attendance in theory classes to become eligible to appear in the Term-end Examination. Additionally, they have to maintain 90% attendance in a practical session to become eligible for the practical examination.
  • Term-End Examination: The term-end examination is the main component of the evaluation system. The University conducts term-end examinations twice a year - in June and December
  • Evaluation: Except for the Dissertation, the evaluation will be done based on:
    • Continuous assessment of assignments (25% of total weightage)
    • A term-end written examination (75% of the total weightage).

The dissertation will be considered as a single entity (equivalent to a course of 12 credits).

Ans. Twice in a year IGNOU accepts assignments, which are compulsory in order to appear for the course exam that particular session. If you missed in May, you can appear for the exams in Dec by submitting the same set in Sept, since it's valid. A new set is released for every new year, it's you who has to decide when he/she can appear the exams and thus fills the exam form after submitting the assignments well on time.
