Most students misinterpret this branch as a sub-division of mechanical engineering. It’s true that a part of Production and Industrial Engineering is taught in mechanical as a subject course, but it barely even scratches the surface of P&I engineering. Production and Industrial engineering is an industry-specific branch and is designed in order to link two factors: production and cost. It was formed in order to optimize the production line to meet the demand of the market while optimizing all various types of costs associated with production. Students of P&I get core as well as non-core placements.

Non-Core Sectors - As P&I is a very industry-specific branch and mainly deals with theoretical analysis of various factors (internal as well as external) that affect the cost of the production line and optimizes them. Therefore it helps students develop an analytical approach that opens up the way into non-engineering sectors such as analytics, finance, and consulting. A lot of the P&I students also choose to go into the IT sector.

Core Sectors – Students who want to pursue a career in the core sector get opportunities to work for Tata, GM, CAT, Shell, Ashok Leyland, Hero, Bosch, Honda, John Deere, Mercedes Benz, etc. The average CTC received by the students of IIT Delhi is 16 LPA.
