Among NIT Allahabad and NIT Calicut, NIT Allahabad is a better choice for engineering, considering most relevant factors like placement, curriculum, etc. The points below give a brief overview of both the institutes, stating some advantages of both.

The placements statistics and quality of facilities and education in the departments of NIT Allahabad are obviously much ahead of those of NIT Calicut.
For students who like to explore places along with study and placements, NIT Calicut should be preferred over NIT Allahabad.
NIT Calicut has the most happening campus among all NITs in India, though not as good as MNNIT in terms of academics and placement. NIT Calicut has the biggest cultural fest of southern India, known as Ragam, and the technical fest, known as Tathva.
NIT Calicut is ranked 5th among all the NITs. So, it is not that ahead of the other four.

So, it is evident that both NIT Allahabad and NIT Calicut are decent options for students in engineering. But, if you are preferring placement and academics, NIT Allahabad is a better choice, and if you want activities and campus life, NIT Calicut is the better choice.
